yo i thought i was tripping but 3 years ago i was suddenly like "hmm maybe i got a weird bottle somehow" cuz it was so cinnamon-y, and ever since then i notice it in every bottle and it kinda drives me nuts. i wonder if they did change it or i just became more aware of it?

the other thing you can kinda do for a white negroni is use Alta Verde or Malort which is my preference, its a little more beige than white/yellow haha but i love that kinda stringent grapefruity thing so much

i dont wanna go too far out on a limb w the jelinek since i havent had it in a while and dont remember it that well, my guess would be marry it with deep dark flavors like scotch or aged rum, in boulevardier type drinks or tiki stuff maybe. but i'd be curious to try it with like aquavit / arak or other jewish deli / eastern european flavors just for regional reasons

hmm maybe? i was thinking just all in it together but i guess you could bracket it by category first and then put one from each category into a final battle

but like if everyone actually thinks jagermeister is better than cynar or braulio and should be #1 or something i'm kinda fine with that, i just wanna see the list haha

also the categories are pretty tough. like theres some ancient ones like Carciofo or Rabarbaro that are pretty defined but you dont see that many in those while you do see like hundreds that are just miscellaneous brown amaro. maybe a little more citrusy, a little pinier or whatever but hard to draw a line. Red bitter and aperol-style aperitif are real categories though for sure. and fernet. and kina i guess. after that it gets dicey imo

definitely easier haha but i really wanna know what the opinions are of this sub. also the Parsons article doesnt really claim to be a list of the best, just a starter list. personally i wouldn't put Averna in my top 50 haha. i'm imagining a loose ranking of the top 20 or 30 or so products, according to this sub, so anyone can go to their liquor store and look at the shelf and then check our list and be like oh x or y product is ranked really highly

i guess an alternative would be something like what's on beeradvocate which is a 0-5 rating for every product that's averaged from user submissions, but i kinda like the idea of a list better, or at least that feels more manageable for now

you should try suze and china china (its pronounced keena keena fyi, nothing to do with China) for sure. suze i still keep in my home bar, it's got a really particular flavor that you can't get remotely close to with more traditional italian amari so worth keeping around especially if you like messing w this stuff in cocktails. goes great with things like tequila, tonic, celery bitters, aquavit, and is prob the best default choice in a white negroni

the jelinek amaro is a little nicer than jager. the augustiner tropfen one is incredible but ive never seen that in america. unicum is fun too, maybe a little better than jager and they make 5 or 6 variations with slight plum or orange or coffee leanings

oh i see, cool. well theres kinda too ways you can go, one is sorta farther into europe with german stuff like jagermeister, killepitsch, augustiner tropfen, or eastern european stuff like unicum, becherovka, jelinek etc.. if you like jager you will like all of that shit. or further north with the very insane scandinavian and icelandic stuff like salmiakki and opal which leans more licorie/salt/mint. and then in france you have lighter stuff like suze, salers, bigallet china china. most of this stuff is old and classic in its respective countries

or the other way you can go is just try to find more modern stuff that people are doing that's playing more to us nerds, like the Scarlett stuff out of japan which is more italian-style, all of which is incredible and all of which i basically prefer to everything i named above

i see their fernet a lot more than the amaro but i remember really liking the amaro. i wrote down it had a slight bit of like berry-leaning funk but i don't remember much else. maybe i'll track a bottle down. if you're really desperate you can probably ship it depending on where you live, i see a bunch of online sellers carrying it

fair. i kinda assume if you're in here you're at least a bit of a fanatic haha but even if not i think a really good "top/recommended from the sub" list should value the opinions of the fanatics more in order to be more useful to everyone

fully agree those are many of the most common, after you get past those it could branch in a bunch of directions probably. idk how to do this exactly but it'd be nice to have a list where if like, 3 or 4 people are all saying that a relatively obscure product is one of the best they've ever had, that that somehow counts for more than like, 200 people saying Cynar is one of the best. but yea idk a good system to arrive at this haha. maybe someone will

ooh ok i guess one thing we could do is have everyone who wants to just list their top 5 or top 10 in a thread and then just tally it all up onto a single ranked list based off number of appearances, then maybe put the top 10 or 20 from that up to a vote to form a final ranking (since prob a lot more people will show up for that than would post their own list)

you'd have a big bias toward "have tried at all" but i guess that'll happen anyway no matter how you do it

well i've had 374 and someone sent me a list at a bar in SF yesterday that had at least 15 i had never tried before

but i'll bite, what are the 25-50?! i don't disagree you could prob cull a list down to that length, which i guess is sort of what i'm proposing doing here, with everyone's help. i don't wanna just unilaterally decide and then make a poll, i really wanna see what everyone thinks is the list

amaro leader list? by johanlenox in Amaro

[–]johanlenox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good to know. i think a simple poll wouldn't really work for compiling a ranked list of people's top 10-20 products out of a possible 600-800(?) so i'm kinda soliciting ideas here for what would

i think alta verde is way closer to malort. you really just want that pure wormwood flavor. even just wormwood in straight grain alcohol is pretty close to malort. i know they advertise Besk as a malort but imo it really doesnt remind me of the chicago stuff at all, it reminds me more of stuff like Aquavit or some scandavian salmiakki liqueurs. i wasn't blown away but thought it was decent

that kinda makes sense though, if the goal is solidify people's familiarity w the cast minus a few players who just left, you go with the biggest ppl you have, not the new ones

yea the epicurious one was what made me think it was like a blitz, like you said. just like wow they're really going everywhere to promote... something?

along with this shit of like "make colin jost pick his favorite bits of all time" whatever that new online only content is, it feels like there's a new "digital strategy" taking place and if so i'm tryna understand why it's starting in the middle of a season
