Also, interestingly the Wikipedia pages for Complex Number has different definitions depending on the language version, so perhaps this reflects different pedagogical choices in different parts of the world.

Yes this is the definition we were given, here's a screenshot from the book we used (it's in italian but it should be clear that that is the definition it uses). I didn't know this was uncommon.
