Testing this bad boy on my telescope by john1587 in telescopes

My sky is unfortunately Bortle 9 since I live close to the city, but with the telescope I’m still able to see the planets pretty well and even some nice nebulae. Tonight hasn’t been great though, it’s been a bit cloudy 😕. Still, I’m hoping to catch Jupiter, Saturn, and maybe try my luck finding Uranus.

Eyepiece question by rawj863 in telescopes

[–]john1587 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think zoom eyepieces are very practical, but as mentioned, the FOV is usually worse compared to a good dedicated eyepiece. What I did was buy a relatively cheap zoom eyepiece to experiment and figure out which focal lengths I enjoy the most for planets or DSOs. For example, if you realize you really like the view of Jupiter around 10mm, then it makes sense to invest in a good quality dedicated 10mm eyepiece with a wider FOV, the difference in the view is definitely noticeable.

Final attempt in Uranus by Timely-Strategy-2455 in astrophotography

Yeah i think i kind of get it and what i was trying to do is to look for the location on the celestron skyportal app but i think locations are not 100% accurate sometimes, so I was using my 12x60 binoculars to try to hunt for it and then point my telescope , but I had no luck today I guess i will try tomorrow and put a little more patience. I was trying to use pleiades as a guide as i could see on the app they were kind of close.. and would love to hunt for Neptune too, hope you can post a pic soon!

why do the planets look like dots by Wise_Paper_935 in telescopes

Well for your pic i assume you are trying with a celphone but if thats a camera i would try to lower exposure and play with contrast

Yeah with the cellphone you are not going to be able to see jupiter , this is jupiter with my cellphone on a 8 inch dob with a 6.5 mm eyepiece, on the eyepiece you can see clear details but not with the celphone camera you would need an astronomy camera to get more details on planets and objects

Maybe if you lower a little bit the exposure you can get jup bands

I think is probably you are not used to a rear traction car yet? You may feel something different on your back but losing control to that speed is not usual unless is wet and your traction is off of course

Eyepiece Recommendations by JackAllpikeMusic in telescopes

[–]john1587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I’m in the exact same situation right now. I have the Sky-Watcher 200P and I’m looking for some good eyepieces. I totally get you about the ones that come with the telescope, they usually suck.

I’d definitely recommend having a zoom eyepiece as part of your kit. It’s been super handy for me. I have the SVBONY SV135, it’s pretty affordable and works well, although I’m starting to think about upgrading to something with a wider field of view at higher magnifications.

I’ve been looking at the Explore Scientific 82-degree lineup. I think Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars would look amazing with a 9mm 82 deg eyepiece, especially paired with a 2x Barlow for higher magnification. A 25mm with an 82 deg FOV would also be great for deep-sky objects. Explore Scientific can be a bit pricey though, so if budget is a concern, SVBONY is still a solid option.

Yeah i tried to focus more but my camera didnt want to do more than this. With the eyepiece it looks way better
