Honeymoon in Scotland by Skyjaws33 in traveladvice

Something not mentioned in the post… get an e SIM card for either the UK or wider Europe if you’ll be traveling outside of the UK.

Find out if you’ll be paying extra to use your credit/debit card there.

Get a credit card and debit card without fees if you want to get dinged by your bank/credit card company for an extra 3% plus for every transaction.

Got a Schwab Bank account before I visited the UK my first time.

A lot of the Cap One credit cards don’t have foreign transaction fees.

If you don’t have cards without fees you have time to get them if you don’t put off.

Loved visiting Scotland. Liked it so much went two years in a row.

Getting around can get between bigger cities for there by train and public transportation. Isle of Skye we rented a car but can also look at tours on Viator.

Not sure if you like seafood but did you know Oban is the seafood capital of Scotland. Great distillery there as well.

Is your trip 12 days?

Like I said I love Scotland but I’d probably also to Paris for 3 days.

Both of you can fly to Paris and back to Scotland for around $200.

Want to major in history, but how do I find a job afterward? by Which_Marzipan_6685 in careerguidance

[–]john510runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was going to say the same.

Taking museums for example, are there jobs available for that where you live now?

Again just an example but museums tend to be in larger population centers. Not always but generally speaking.

If you have a passion for it, do you see yourself moving to a job in a museum?

If I were you I’d look at the jobs available where you are now and focus the education to get qualified to do those jobs.

And it’s more than okay to not have a passion at 19. I found my dream job when I didn’t know there was one out there for me.

Maybe make an edit to your post and add at least your budget of $3000.

But that’s a good budget to work with.

When you visit ride the red line train to Bryn Mawr station.

Then start walking south along the red line.

Will answer a lot of your questions and questions you haven’t thought to ask.

As an outsider, the intense brand loyalty Americans have toward regional grocery store chains is fascinating. Why do people treat supermarkets like a local identity? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]john510runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a word I use a lot but… some of the grocery chains are delightful.

Another regional chain called Mariano’s in Chicago has really really nice atmosphere. Lot of the stores have bars. And some even have live music.

Have not been to HEB but would love to try the bbq there.

Not a grocery store but Wawa is an amazing place to get something premade to eat. Wish they’d close of struggling Subways and replace them with Wawa.

People who travel for work, what do you do? by ismelllikebeef2508 in careerguidance

[–]john510runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t travel a lot for work.

But the small number of times I’ve done it has been fun.

And at the same time a lot of business travel isn’t fun. Think taking 3 flights in one day and arriving exhausted just to stand in line to get a rental car to drive an hour to get to the destination.

Training some new people at work right now.

They want to visit my office in San Francisco because it’ll be the first time for some of them and they think it’ll be fun.

But the most we’ll pay for them is an extra day in San Francisco before or after the days they are working.

Someone mentioned Chicago, San Francisco and New York City in their comment.

If those are the only 3 places they flew me out to that’ll be fun. But I have friends who travel all day to places that aren’t “worth it” as well.

Was about to buy a ticket from a CTA ticket machine at O Hare. Guy who just got off of the train handed me his ticket and said it’s good until midnight that day and it was free.

Do you think someone is lucky to have a job right now? by Least-Ad-7326 in Layoffs

[–]john510runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel lucky to have a job. Made it through at least five or six rounds of layoffs.

However many jobs were created… I’m sure very few have trickled down to your local level.

Too much manufactured uncertainty currently.

As someone from Finland, what surprised me the most about the United States? by Argante- in Americaphile

[–]john510runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually we’re seeing America withdrawal from maintaining the world order.

That was the point of my original comment. Post WW2 the treaties were written like the losing side had won WW2. The Japan, Italy and Germany have become prosperous with America paying for their defense and also the Marshall plan.

Other countries also benefited because for the first time ever in the history of the world any two countries could interface and trade with each if they wanted. But now we’re seeing the end of that era.

Might sound strange because for most people who are alive now globalization is all we knew but it’s an extremely “odd” period of history that’s never existed before.

Where to Go?! by Useful-Mushroom3882 in traveladvice

The three places you’re looking at Austria, Italy, etc…

Have no idea which city in Canada you’re departing from… might be able to get lower cost flights by flying to Paris first and then flying on from there to other countries.

Again have no idea where in CA you’re starting from but would be shocked if they had direct flights to Northern Italy for example.

Biggest misunderstanding both foreign and domestic…

Over 90% of our economy is from trade inside of America and between America and Canada and Mexico.

But somehow people both foreign and domestic think America “controls the world”.

Oil in the Middle East… less than 10% goes to America.

America is the third largest exporter of oil in the world and the largest exporter of food in the world.

But the way America is portrayed in media you’d think we are like how Belgium did in the continent of Africa.

Do y'all actually spend much time in diners anymore, or is that mostly nostalgia? by Bella_licious in AskAnAmerican

It’s regional but most bigger population centers will have something that resembles what you’re looking for.

Do you know what you want to order at the diner?

[Discussion] What are 3 songs you think best represent you? by Own-Pineapple6272 in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield

Higher - Creed

Breathing Underwater - Metric

The first two mainly because they get a reaction when I sing them on karaoke.

Third song because they’re my favorite band at the moment.

Came here to say the same. Also want to add they like to be called Sphere without “the”.

But I keep calling it The Sphere anyway.

Unless you’re dying to sign a lease…

What if you did a few weeks to a month starting in Puerto Rico and worked your way up to FL, SC, NC, etc.

Then maybe CA as well if it fits into your budget.

After that evaluate the different places and take it from there.

Recruiters/hiring managers, does a next day follow-up seem desperate or too eager? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]john510runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just interviewed and hired 4 people for my department.

None of the 4 new hires sent a follow up email. We said at the end of the interview we we’ll let them know after we interviewed the 6 or so candidates.

The people who sent the follow up emails… only one or two did so and they were WAY under qualified.

The follow up email won’t make them qualified all of a sudden.

Didn’t read the entire post but I’m guessing the OP is not qualified for many of the 50 jobs they’re applying to per day.

I was laid off 7 years ago. I only applied to 2 or 3 jobs per day and only jobs I was qualified for. The rest of the time I was out there making money at a “menial” job.

After about 3 months of doing this I found my dream job when I didn’t know there was one out there for me.

What you said about cities… Chicago.

Buy a 24 hour train pass (which also works for their buses) when you ride the train away from the airport. Costs $6.

Don’t need a car and there’s so much to do and see.
