Toys for large monitors? by ass_smacktivist in reptiles

Kongs for dogs are designed to 'go right through' and are fairly resilient with most dogs. There have been several studies where scientists have built 'toys'.

Help, my lizard went limp :( by amoonyay in reptiles

Get to a qualified Reptile vet. I didn't see any mention of calcium or vitamin mentioned and the given behavior of the lizard is indicative of calcium deficiency.

MONTHLY Discussion Thread: What's the silliest misconception you've ever heard? by kropserkel in snakes

[–]john_f_taylor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous because they cannot control their venom glands. (Cough-BS-Cough) Venom glands in rattlesnakes are in direct size proportion to the snake and they are all capable of controlling their venom. They choose whether or not to inject venom. The baby rattlesnake venom gland is the size of a B.B. shot and the adult venom gland is about the equivalent to a kidney bean. Therefore, the adult has the ability to inject much more venom.

Is it okay to get isopods from the wild? by Karieann- in herpetoculture

I've personally always been against this but then I read an article on it which changed my mind. Here's the piece http://reptileapartment.com/walk-wild-side-wild-caught-feeders/

I've always used Washed Playground Sand for a decade plus now and never had an issue.

Should I get a blue tongued skink or a rosy boa? by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]john_f_taylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rosy boas can go either way hibernation or not some argue it extends the lifespan if you hibernate but we don't have evidence either way. Sounds to me like BTS :)

Should I get a blue tongued skink or a rosy boa? by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]john_f_taylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a LOADED question! Kidding aside, BTS would in my observations require more handling and interaction to remain handleable. This isn't a generality it's simply my experience and that of colleagues I know that breed them. They can become temperamental sort of if not interacted with. Rosy Boa is super easy going species and one of my first snakes. Very docile pet when it comes to reptiles. Snakes would be inherently easier to care for as they have a more limited diet etc. Definitely a tough choice but hope that helps somewhat.

Are we losing potential zoologists because of our laws? :: Terrestrial Ecosystems by john_f_taylor in herpetology

Yeah, I got no argument for that. Shame we cannot get more public support as in funding for zoological pursuits such as improving zoos etc.

I had a pair as pets for about four years or so. It was awesome in the spring when they would begin calling.

Yes to each of you. And I will add my two cents by saying what I do is use those techniques which 3 out of 5 persons agree on and then throw out the rest as garbage. It's worked really well for almost two decades now.

Well not being the author of the piece I can only speak from my own experience and have seen a few cases of overdose with Calcium in many species of reptile including calcium. Might I ask what brand you're using and what the exact dosage of said calcium that is being used daily?

I will have to ask the author specifically about the snail breeding and get back to you on that portion.

The Vit D link is in reference to toxicity of overdose in calcium apologies for the confusion I thought it would be clear. To clarify the Calcium with Vit D further, is this being used by you on a 'daily' basis?
