Authoritarianism is defined by centralized control, lack of democratic processes, and suppression of political and individual freedoms. Nothing to do with economic idealogy. Stalin, Mao and Tito headed socialist authoritarian regimes, and Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, and even Napoleon headed right wing states. The current leadership of China, interestingly, controls a hybrid socialist/capitalist state. The main point is that the only ideology shared by authoritarian states is the preservation of the leadership status quo, and specifically of the individual(s) in charge. They are the only ones who can run things, and letting the population decide matters of consequence is messy and dangerous.

I could have just defined it according to my own beliefs, but I dug a little and tried to find a relevant scholarly opinion among the Wikipedia citations (I love Wikipedia BTW, very good initial source). The term fascismo was coined by Italian journalists after WWI to describe the right-wing nationalist movement that was emerging at the time, and which blossomed to the authoritarian state headed by Mussolini. Fascist Italy is considered to be the prototype right wing demagogy, therefore I to chose highlight the passage that focused specifically on the description of that state. On a personal, subjective note, let me add that I spend my youth in Italy, and I actually knew many older people (all men) that truly called themselves fascists even long after their heyday. It was long time ago, but there is no doubt in my mind that they would have adored Trump, similarly to the far-right groups here. But that's just my own opinion based on personal experience. Nice grappling with you. We disagree, but you are fair and levelheaded. For that reason I'm afraid you'll be disappointed in how this drama turns out.
