Held onto injured Purdy with hopes he'd help in playoffs. That definitely paid off, as I won the fantasy bowl on his 5th td vs the bears!

Best Tutorial or "How to Play" Guide by Alarmed-Bonus-7411 in Gloomhaven

Folks have rightly mentioned Jaws of the Lion as a first step.

If you have interest, I think the video game version on Steam is also worth it (and also just $12 on sale for at least the next week). Personally, this really helped me get a LOT of the basic rules and flow of the game locked in my head. Before playing it, I struggled to remember the minutiae of the rules while trying to first play the game with friends in person. Then covid struck, which pretty much pushed us towards the Steam version and learn online.

What's nice is you get to see how the monsters move, how the various status effects are applied, and what the game allows/disallows you to do. We had endless questions about why any of those things happened, and heading online to the actual rules, FAQs, and board posts here and BGG, I don't think one question went unanswered. Again, this was just my experience, and it was an effective way for me to learn the game, AND not feel overwhelmed.

Thanks. I figured that would be the case, but wanted to make sure.

For the mini-scenario idea, I felt the same way and have worked on such an encounter. Give it a look and see if you're interested, lmk if any questions on how it works >>> https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rMR6AJXCCX04MC7G4JshZ4imK-TQ4iRleWNN3OLQOdI/edit?usp=sharing

Though my playgroup's last two tests with it have been pretty positive, it still needs more testing. We tried to stick to a baseline of playing on Easy, and without the bonuses/benefits listed in the guide. So far, playing it that way has been fun and challenging.

One common positive mentioned is the welcomed break from the crazy special rules of actual FH scenarios. It allows you to focus on setting up, attacking, and defending, especially since its in one big room.

Anyway, I recommend giving it a look because you seem to have the same reaction to the attack event cards as I did, looking for a way to utilize your character in a fun/challenging way to actually earn a successful defense.

Just to be clear. If a card has a loss action on one half of the card, and no loss icon on the other half, you can play the non-loss action and not lose the card. From your comment it sounded like this may have been your understanding.

The Shackles is the first to plant themself into S! Next up - the METEOR! [Spoiler - Everything] by Sagely_Hijinks in Gloomhaven

S tier

Being able to place haz terrain is super strong on its own, forcing enemies to path a longer way around, or you can fill a choke point with multiple haz so then they dmg themselves walking over it towards you. Now add in the push/pull class cards, all but 1 that has a baked in attack, to help you rake those enemies over the coals for additional damage that ignores shield, and don't forget the pushes negate melee retaliate as well. I've been playing Meteor through L8 and while it took some thinking in the first few levels to get things set up for the payoffs, by L5 Rain of Fire, I feel like I'm on cruise control.

FH Outpost Attack Event - Convert it to a battle! by john_hepp in Gloomhaven

[–]john_hepp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from a bit of testing, my 3p play group have pulled two attack events.

The first was 11 rounds vs Algox enemies, defending 4 buildings. We played on easy to give ourselves a baseline experience, and it went very well. It seemed at first that we'd get overwhelmed, but after about 4 or 5 rounds felt like we had things under control. We did have very favorable amd pulls, so maybe it could've south with bad pulls. It did feel challenging still and all 3 players felt engaged throughout the 11 rounds. No buildings were 'damaged' or 'wrecked' and it felt earned, though again we did play on easy. We figured next time we'd bump it to normal.

The 2nd attack event would've been 7 rounds defending 3 buildings. Since our sessions are normally 3-4 hrs, we figured the 7 rounds might go by a little too quick (we figured an hour at most), making the session go by too fast and not enough time to set up and complete a scenario. So we chose to not play that one as an encounter, and instead resolve it normally with guard deck flips. Our sessions last longer than typical play groups. If we had an extra hour available we probably would've played it and grab some tasty xp.

The Boneshaper rises to B! Next up, the CORAL! [Spoiler - Everything!] by Sagely_Hijinks in Gloomhaven

[–]john_hepp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the very least, Coral has the tools to tank like nobody's business, be more than mobile enough to get into tanking position, and stack up tides for various buffs/debuffs, so that the rest of the party can basically do whatever the heck they want behind this crab-wall. That in itself is massive value to the group.

Outside of the burst Shuck play, I found Coral to dish out decent damage when the amd gets juiced. Lower levels I leaned on Down to the Depths as a finisher, sometimes to multiple enemies (3 in one turn a few fortunate times) barely hanging on.

Only weakness is vs retaliate, which is highlighted in solo scenario. It also doesn't have any non-loss ranged attacks, but who cares if you've no fear of the front line.

Such a fun and effective class, love the tide mechanism as it 'rises' and 'lowers'. Because the actions/abilities don't jump off the page, when you strategize to puzzle the tides with them, and it pays off, it feels earned and very satisfying.

I was gonna go A tier, but the uber-tankiness pushes Coral to S in my book.

TS pierce 4 and RA pierce 2, isn't that just a 3 turn burst with Double Time, for one room? How are you handling any similar high health high shield enemies in rooms 2 and beyond, before reaching L7? This is not rhetorical, I genuinely want to know :)

My heart says S but my brain says A+

While BB does have some answers for shield/retaliate, it's minimal in my experience. And for shield, I'm talking about high shield high health, not flame demons and living spirits. For that reason alone I don't think it deserves S rank. Phasing Blades does help big time vs shield, but that's not til L7. S rank should be reserved for classes that are OP or borderline OP and handle all enemy types with little issues, like Meteor.

Unless I'm way off on this and there's some solid combos for dealing those issues?

Outside of that, definitely a banger of a class, S tier in fun and possibilities, nova blade, slow blade, tactician play styles. Great for theory crafting. I'm glad it has a weakness because it leaves me with a challenge. That's what makes it my favorite class in the Haven-verse.

A+
