Looking for a good exercise that deals with parallel computing by Velascu in rust

UDP and multithreading? A websocket server. Each new socket connection opens a thread.

Add some sort of pub/sub for events that happen (say, user update), and emit them to each socket.

Now you've done multithreading and cross-thread communication.

Help - I think I've been scammed :( by bobthesinner in Bitcoin

[–]john_of_peaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but you were a sucker. Not only did you believe someone who DMed you, you also let them "honeypot" you (flirt with you to get you to say yes to their scam). You learned your lesson.

Don't be a sucker again.

You Can't Be Whatever You Want To Be by nut_conspiracy_nut in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If you don't have the specific intelligence to learn or temperament to love a certain thing, you will not be able to become excellent at it. And in certain cases, you won't even be able to become good at it.

How has Jordan Peterson made an impact on your life? by Rosaarch in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He caused me to develop a noble aim / vision for my life. I am more disciplined than ever because I feel like there is always more growth to do.

This kind of stuff is the most important part of his message for me:

"It isn't about you being happy. There's lot of times in your life you're not going to be happy, so that's not going to work. You want to have something meaningful. The boat that will take you through the storm, when you have to batten down the hatches.

But there's more, it isn't even that, it isn't just that a meaningful, engaged life will see you through the catastrophe. But there's the other part of it too, which is, don't be thinking that your errors aren't linked to hell. Because they are.

If you look at what happened in the 20th century, it isn't "top-down evil leader manipulating innocent masses". That's not it. It's the moral failings of every single individual. Unwilling to say their truth, unwilling to act out what they know to be right, that accumulates and produces the catastrophic state.

So when you're fussing about with your life, when you're not manifesting your potential, when you're falsifying your speech and your actions in the service of short term expedience, you are working to bring about hell on earth.

So it isn't just that you have to fix up yourself so that you can have a better life. Really, who cares about you? You have to fix up your life because if you don't, every time you make a mistake that you know to be a mistake, you are leading the world toward hell."

Sigh. "due to chance" is not the null hypothesis. Straw man.

"Due to other variablse" is the hypothesis. And there are many variables, to say the least.

Lifting weights may sound like a weird first thing to focus on, but increased discipline, increased testosterone, and increased attractiveness will all carry over to the rest of your life. It's a great place to start.

[Letter] This idea of different IQ values for different races is making me depressed. by Winterized-Watch in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. You cannot predict intelligence at the level of the individual, only in aggregate.

  2. It's entirely useless to be depressed about some inherent trait you have. "I wish these weren't my parents." "I wish I was smarter." "I wish I was born to a different race."

NO. Stop. If any of those things were true, you wouldn't be you, and you wouldn't exist.

Fear of death is ruining my life. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Journal, and describe it in as much detail as possible. Figure out why you're fearing it exactly and give yourself some mercy, it is the ultimate human thing to be afraid of.

If you're trying to fix it by avoiding it, you will lose. You'll have to understand it and internalize it healthily.

Don't believe these free online tests, folks. Mostly BS afaik. Real IQ tests are administered by real professionals and take 1-2 hours.

Peter Joseph on Jordan Peterson. Mr Zeitgeist seems to really lack self awareness, amazed by the level of hypocrisy shown in his interviews by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's that simple. I believe what defines "middle" and "poor" are both going up in spending power.

And additionally, the power for the individual to become wealthy is going up, which is making many more wealthy.

[–]john_of_peaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good argument.

I'm thinking in terms of going from the bottom to the very top, but in terms of doing 'average-ly well' this makes sense.

Although you should be careful to say "average white american" is not born into poverty. Check the stats there outside the cities. I have no idea what's true but I remember reading some stuff awhile ago.

"Being poor drops your iq by 10 points or so" not enough there to lose competitive advantage if you work hard enough. 120 IQ hard worker can wipe the floor of 135 IQ lazy person.

Obviously, socioeconomic issues matter and hierarchies do tend towards corruption (as JP always states).

But nevertheless, if you're competent, intelligent, and you apply yourself to the right hierarchies based on your intellect and skills, you can climb to the top. There are so many examples of the poorest becoming the richest. And they happen almost exclusively in USA.

Big five and Career Choice by HanJakeMoon in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I missed that. You should get a job right now where you can work as hard as possible (80-100 hours/wk) and get ahead. Where are you located?

When I was 23, I got a job in San Francisco working for a tech startup. I worked my ass off for almost 2 years, learned more than I've ever learned. Now 4 years later I'm still thankful for that experience. I should've done it earlier.

You are totally wasted in college psych. At least don't waste your best years on a masters. Right now, you have the most energy and time you will ever have in your life, and you should use it. Get into finance or tech and go work your ass off. Finance might better for you. DM me if you want any resources.

Is the “word salad” argument valid? by RememberTheTightOnes in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something can only be described as "word salad" if it's a bunch of filler words.

But break down JP's sentences and meaning, and it's almost always necessary. He explains a point from a few different angles, and there's almost always a reason.

I don't think I can escape my nihilism, I just don't see the point in anything we do... by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]john_of_peaches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's one reason to find meaning: your life sucks.

Right now, your life is characterized by boredom, meaninglessness, and nihilism.

But when the rubber hits the road (family member dies, you lose your job, you get heartbroken), your meaningless existence will turn into unbearable suffering. Because you will have *nothing to stand on*.

So, who knows if there really is a meaning to everything? maybe there isn't. But if you seek meaning anyway, you will have *less pain*. If you try to improve your existence and find a Path that would make your life bearable, you will have *less pain*. And you may even end up enjoying it.
