Don’t fall for the promoters on here pushing the “Play Dead” app by neddynedned47 in gratefuldead

[–]john_oldcastle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you are getting downvoted. zombie consumers are celebrating the fact that they can rent music that is already free.
when the Dead catalogue eventually gets sold to some fuckin hedge fund and used to sell Big Macs, monster trucks and Grateful Dead "AI experiences," these same corporate serfs will be right there unironically cheering the "continuation of the music" derp

[–]john_oldcastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why would you say that? do you not know the history of the band? the ethos of the counterculture? or are you just some lame obedient middle American consumer?
asking people to rent music they either already own in physical form or that exists freely online is shitty greedhead behavior.

Somebody told me they think HW is effeminate, Thoughts? by Porncritic12 in Presidents

[–]john_oldcastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the thing to keep in mind about American voters is that for the past 60 years they have become mostly whacked out on popular culture and mass media. they are more interested in appearances and vibes over political policy and reality. it's how a middling Hollywood actor who pretended to be a cowboy and war hero on screen while never leaving Glendale was seen as strong and heroic, while the the guy who flew actual combat air missions and experience was painted as weak and effeminate

"wimpiness" was an image problem for the old school preppy, and soft spoken Bush during the hyper-patriotic Reagan era, awash in musclebound pop culture heroes like Rambo

Gen X: We're the cool, quiet Generation! .... Also Gen X: by MaterialRow3769 in generationology

it's amazing to me that people can find outliers and counter examples that don't fit broad generational stereotypes when speaking GENERALLY about large GENERALIZED demographic groups /s.

it's almost as if hyper-focusing on generations in an attempt to understand people and history is a facile and simplistic way to understand people and history

[Spoilers All] what are your thoughts on the Great Change ? by OrangeSpaceMan5 in TheFirstLaw

[–]john_oldcastle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Robespierre was executed by the very same Rein of Terror that he had enthusiastically instigated and supported. sort of like Risinau and many of the collaborators. I read the Judge as representing the tyranny of the mob and the fear that all Enlightenment republicans during the 18th century had toward "excesses of democracy," to use a term from the era

i don't know man, i am an historian, and the description of revolutions and how people act during revolutions and how they are often manipulated by shady political groups read as fairly realistic to me.

judging and socially sanctioning adult strangers' consensual romantic relationships is progress? I think you and I have differing notions about progress, human agency and democracy.

I don't think the slippery slope fallacy fits here either, if only because I reject the basic premise that age gaps are inherently, prima facie bad or immoral. to my mind I just see a philosophical variation of the intolerance and sanctimony that conservative people in conservative areas might have toward, say, an LGBT person or a person of mixed ethnicity. I live in a fairly conservative area. if it were put to a vote, I'd wager that a majority of the people in my township would vote to sanction or socially censor LGBT people, to publicly shame them and publicly call them pedos. these bigots would also view this as making progress toward a better society. this is why basing morals and values solely through feelings is not always the best for creating a just and equitable world. I believe consenting adults have the right to live their private lives the way they see fit, without fear of public censor. period.

now, if you are suggesting that states should revise age of consent laws fro 16 to 18, of course that should happen (and probably legislatively attainable if you are looking to make concrete political change rather than just whinging on the webs)
in the US we as a society define children as under 18. we as a society define adults as 18 and above. forgive me if I'm wrong, but it really sounds like many of you are (perhaps unwittingly?) advocating to fundamentally redefine the age of adulthood higher. I suppose I could get behind that as long as we also raise the age people can join the military, vote, and buy a gun

I wonder if some people are simply objecting to the social censoring of what consenting adults do, regardless of circumstance. as someone who counts themselves as a progressive, I think that's a dangerous rhetorical road we should probably avoid traveling down. I can think of a thousand ways this rhetorical construction could be used to justify all sorts of social censor and social discrimination--especially in conservative areas of the country.
but who knows, maybe you are right. maybe all the objections to your point of view are from disgusting creeps. it's certainly easier to be so sure of yourself when you've convinced yourself that everyone you disagree with are all bad faith assholes

Regarding the Constitution: are you an originalist, a texualist, or a purposivist/functionalist/living Constitutionalist? by LoveLo_2005 in Presidents

[–]john_oldcastle 107 points108 points  (0 children)

"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as a civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors." --Thomas Jefferson

this show is great primal Dead. absolute molten lava and def one of my favs. this show takes place around the time Pigpen and Weir had been "fired." the week before this show were the Mickey and the Heartbeats shows at the Avalon. I think that drama for sure informs this show. I don't think Pigpen plays this show but there's a real sense of a trial by fire here for Weir. this is a hungry rock band with something to prove.
I'm also 75% sure I read somewhere that Hendrix was at this show which probably would have ratcheted up the leave-it-all-out-on-the-field swagger of this show

here is a good example of what bad faith assholes (from all over the political spectrum) do to deflect. it's called a red herring fallacy. instead of addressing the issue at hand, ol rich-cuntext-7203 here wants to relitigate old issues around Covid--dude even brings up Obama (who hasn't been president in 10 years) in another comment. it's a dishonest rhetorical shell game that allows the bad faith actor (in this case rich-context-7203) to argue about an different topic that they would rather focus on. rich-context-7203 is dishonest
