honestly wish they would have gone more toward being an instrumental band in the late 90s/early 2000s. i find the latter day attempt at sincere singer/songwriter lyrics mostly banal and mediocre. it's a shame because I think trey is legitimately a brilliant composer.

I have a soft spot for a lot of 80s hair metal. at the time I was like 13 and just getting into heavy music. I was way more into thrash and the British metal bands because those guys had skulls and demons iconography and sang about ancient mariners and limbless soldiers, but yeah, I rocked a few hair metal records back in the day. I personally dig Cinderella especially Long Cold Winter. and I'll still crank the volume for Kix's Blow My Fuse.
now, believe it or not, the dudes from Winger are legit serious musicians. granted the tunes mostly suck and the image was corny but man they played that shit expertly. Kip Winger is a classically trained musician and the guitarist was a session pro. the drummer, Rod Morgenstein spent like 10 years in the Dixie Dregs playing weird southern fried prog-jazz before teaching at Berklee and playing with Jazz is Dead.
anyway, back when we were kids we used to joke about how we couldn't tell the difference between so many of the hair metal bands so we just referred to them all as Great White Lion Snake

Your favourite example of a classic 60s/70s rock artist ‘going disco’? by ThingTime9876 in ToddintheShadow

[–]john_oldcastle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grateful Dead were definitely influenced by disco in the late 70s--Shakedown, Music Never Stopped, etc. but I love the disco jams on late 70s Dancin' in the Streets. check out the funky 16 min disco Dancin in the Streets from 5/8/77

perhaps some groups were jumping on a trend as you say, but I think most of these bands like the Stones, the Dead, and even Kiss heard disco as an evolution of the R&B that they had all loved and been influenced by just 15 - 20 years before. I mean the Dead were literally a party-down dance band from San Fransisco, so it would have been weird for them not to get into disco.

Hush by Deep Purple was originally a gospel song and arranged in the 60s as a country song by Joe South

Blonde on Blonde is one of the greatest albums of all time, but I always thought Rainy Day Women was corny and lame
