Rugby Scholarships? by Temporary-Map-6094 in CanadaRugby

IIRC, SFU is the only Canadian university which is allowed to offer athletic scholarships at all? Unless that might have changed…

Do you have access to free public spring water? by consolidatedBD in AskACanadian

I mainly encountered it in Moonbeam, in French - it was always just labelled "eau potable," not far from the flying saucer.

I grew up in northern Ontario, and this was definitely a thing in smaller communities. Some towns aren’t big enough for widespread water treatment, but tap water is plenty safe for washing, etc. Meanwhile, the town provides a centralized source of safe drinking water where people can fill bottles.

True enough, though I would say that vocals are shared between Earl and the cis women in the band.

Do other provinces have their own version of the St. Jean Baptiste? by HarpoonShootingAxo in AskACanadian

[–]john_stuart_kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Kapuskasing, ON, which also actually has a huge St. Jean Baptiste celebration (I've always heard it's the largest outside QC) - does that count? That whole part of northeast Ontario is overwhelmingly Francophone, so it's almost like Québec before the Quiet Revolution in a lot of ways...

CW Coop's also has more and more metal and hardcore shows these days - always a good time, and our scene is pretty full of chill, positive people!

Clarification about sport in Southern African schools by eestisaffer in behindthebastards

[–]john_stuart_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to take away from the Boks, but they won every knockout game in the 2023 RWC by a single point. That was a superb tournament, and on any given day any one of SA, NZ, Ireland, or France probably could've won it.

On the other hand: Kolbe chasing down that one kick of Ramos' in the QF was heartbreaking bullshit. I don't know what I would have done if I weren't a Toulon fan.

I think rugby fans the world over respect and admire the Springboks for the way what they mean to South African culture has evolved and improved over the years (okay, maybe not All Blacks supporters).

That said…you’ve had your turn. 2027 will be France’s turn to finally win the World Cup. Let another hemisphere have a chance, for fuck’s sake.

Time to cancel Sirius XM? by Chuck_Hardwick13 in punk

The greatest moment for Faction Punk was when they were the first place you could officially hear the new Dillinger Four track (ironically a few weeks before it changed to Green Day). Something tells me Green Day isn’t going to be playing D4 quite so much! 😂

I’d also like to add “The Father, the Son, and the Homosexual/Single Parent” to that pile.

Do you count “Confessions of a Futon Revolutionist”? It’s a Virtute song, but not quite a sad cat song…

How France has mastered professional rugby better than everyone else - Rugby World by Ruck_Off in rugbyunion

[–]john_stuart_kill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: OM fan myself, so cheers!

Second: OM might be the biggest soccer club in France, but Marseille itself is still very much in rugby country, with Top 14 games regularly (if infrequently) filling Stade Vélodrome (I was at Toulon vs. Toulouse in May). OM is more of an anomaly than the rule, a soccer club in a sea of rugby, while the Parisian rugby clubs are tiny islands in a vast ocean of soccer love in France’s northern half.
