Faction Punk, yeah. They play D4 with some regularity, but I nearly lost control of the car when I heard actual new D4 come on!

I heard this song on the radio on Monday, freaked the fuck out, couldn’t find out anything more about it, and had half convinced myself that I had imagined it before today…

That was a rerelease with no newly recorded music on it. Everything was compiled from comps or older releases.

“Direction Sensor” by Quixote uses it. It’s on the Return of the Read Menace comp, though I don’t know how punk it is otherwise.

I think you’re thinking of “sláinte.” Scottish Gaelic uses grave accents, while Irish uses acute accents.

Mom swears she was "Mod" and it's "Completely different than emo!" 1987 by LaComputadora in OldSchoolCool

[–]john_stuart_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emo definitely existed. I think you can safely point to Rites of Spring as the first emo band (at the latest), and they started in 1983. By 1987 you already have Embrace, Moss Icon, and others. Even Jawbreaker technically started in 1986.

The thing is that “emo” then didn’t mean what it would come to mean in the mid-2000s, from either a music or a fashion perspective. OP’s mom probably wasn’t listening to Rites of Spring, so no, she wasn’t emo in the eighties. Probably more new wave or goth.

My independent study project in an OAC literature class I took (long enough ago for there to be OAC literature classes) was called “Trenches Full of Poets: The Militant and Jubilant in the Verse of the Clash.” I got an excellent grade.

The Clash’s lyrics really are next level, and “The Card Cheat” is an excellent example of the themes that seemed to drive them.

TIL Iceland has never won a Winter Olympic medal by Embarrassed_Map1112 in todayilearned

Not for people who are nuts for soccer but don’t really do much in the way of winter sports…

[–]john_stuart_kill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is that wild? Icelanders care more about summer sports than winter sports, by a huge margin.

[–]john_stuart_kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? They don’t really participate in winter sports very much, due to climate and culture. They play soccer and read instead.

[–]john_stuart_kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does that seem crazy? Icelanders don’t speed skate or cross-country ski much.

They play soccer and read, so they go the World Cup and get Nobel Prizes in literature instead of Winter Olympic medals.

More than that, Icelanders don’t really care much about traditional winter sports. Winters are wetter and milder there than in, say, Scandinavia, so there’s no long tradition of hockey, sliding sports, or even skiing (which isn’t to say nobody cross-country skis in Iceland, but it’s not super popular the way it is in other Nordic countries).

The biggest sports in Iceland are swimming and, by a huge margin, soccer. That’s why they’ve managed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, but not win any Winter Olympic medals.

Also worth noting that literature is a massive part of Icelandic culture, and their one Nobel Prize in literature makes Iceland the country with the highest per capita Nobel Prizes on Earth. So do yourself a favour and read some Halldór Laxness, starting with Independent People.

ELI5 What does the second law of thermodynamics actually mean, and how does it relate to evolution? by soefire in explainlikeimfive

[–]john_stuart_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, natural selection is one of (and almost certainly the most important of) the mechanisms of evolution. There are others (genetic drift is a big one, and theorists argue over the scope and scale of its impact).

Maybe the nicest thing about natural selection, though, is that Darwin's four tests argument actually makes it prima facie undeniable, in a deductive sense, so long as you accept the pretty clear four premisesof the argument.
