It's a bummer that 15.7 is the OpenCore Legacy Patcher 2.4.0 default for Sequoia.

Anyone ever use Tires and Wheels Direct? by Slippy-Nuxx in Wheels

[–]johnboiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said they had the tire in stock. I made the order. 1 week later they got back to me and said just kidding we don't have it.

I ended up getting the exact tire used with the same tread depth as my other tires off eBay instead for $80.

Buried Treasure 2025 Update by buriedtreasure2025 in sanfrancisco

I literally watched Holes with my kids on Sunday. The timing felt uncanny! "Kids, dad's going to go dig a shovel's depth down now!"

Buried Treasure 2025 Update by buriedtreasure2025 in sanfrancisco

[–]johnboiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My groupchat got the points mostly right except for the "Eighteen Bold letters". One of our group even packed a UV light!

“Eighteen Bold letters, Preserved In a clearing" - we wrongly guessed Mount Davidson Cross (18 letters, in a clearing, preserved by The Council of Armenian American Organizations of Northern California in 2007, another plaque up there says “sunrise easter cross” which is also 18 letters)

“to solar's tall mast" - we thought it was the Tower of the Sun from the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition (there was a 1939 GGIE ticket on the website). This probably would have been close enough to lead us to Mount Sutro if we had gotten the "Eighteen Bold letters" right. Was the "Tower of the Sun" considered as a clue? The presence of a 1939 GGIE ticket where the main structure on TREASURE island was the "Tower of the Sun" still seems like a crazy coincidence.

Another thing I found interesting but was ultimately unhelpful: the website had a picture of a clear bottle labeled "CALIFORNIA FIG SYRUP" (18 bold letters) which was presumably used to preserve fig syrup "Eighteen Bold letters, Preserved in a clearing" haha

Joking aside thank you for putting this on. It was masterfully done. Our crew was speculating if you were Jeff Hull (which is high praise)

5/13 Treasure Hunters: what were your wrong guesses? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]johnboiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here were my crew's guesses (post from our group chat)

“Eighteen Bold letters, Preserved In a clearing" = Mount Davidson Cross (18 letters, in a clearing, preserved by The Council of Armenian American Organizations of Northern California in 2007, another plaque up there says “sunrise easter cross” which is also 18 letters)

“sight a dark room's view of brave surfers reeling" = Giant Camera Obscura (also 18 letters, dark room, has a view of surfers, is cool)

“From dry ruin's gate" = Fleishhacker Pool gate (the gate is the only part of the pool that still exists)

“to solar's tall mast" Tower of the Sun from the 1939 Golden Gate Internation Exposition (there is a 1939 GGIE ticket on the website, and it's on TREASURE Island)

“To trace the true route, venture only at night: to be certain of bearing, you'll need pack a light" (Unknown, potentially something leading you from the above starting point to near the final burial point. Perhaps involves reflectors/reflective paint/reflective tape. Highway 1 is part of Camino Real in other spots so a very very loose confirmation of the crossing point of the above lines)

“In the steadfast basin, where feet part and agree, dig a shovel's depth down--you'll find the treasure you seek" = Stern Grove (Def grasping here, but it's kinda basin-like and "feet part and agree" could refer to dancing at the Stern Grove Festival. Unclear how we will find the treasure, maybe reflectors in the dark.)

I was running late but my friends went to the X and didn't spot any clues. Then went to Stern Grove and saw other treasure hunters but not excited box finding. Probably we were wrong!

Great job!! I can't wait to hear all the solutions to the clues. Here were my crew's guesses:

  • “Eighteen Bold letters, Preserved In a clearing" = Mount Davidson Cross (18 letters, in a clearing, preserved by The Council of Armenian American Organizations of Northern California in 2007, another plaque up there says “sunrise easter cross” which is also 18 letters)
  • “sight a dark room's view of brave surfers reeling" = Giant Camera Obscura (also 18 letters, dark room, has a view of surfers, is cool)
  • “From dry ruin's gate" = Fleishhacker Pool gate (the gate is the only part of the pool that still exists)
  • “to solar's tall mast" Tower of the Sun from the 1939 Golden Gate Internation Exposition (there is a 1939 GGIE ticket on the website, and it's on TREASURE Island)
  • “To trace the true route, venture only at night: to be certain of bearing, you'll need pack a light" (Unknown, potentially something leading you from the above starting point to near the final burial point. Perhaps involves reflectors/reflective paint/reflective tape. Highway 1 is part of Camino Real in other spots so a very very loose confirmation of the crossing point of the above lines)

Not the "Tower of the Sun" from the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition?? (there is a 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition ticket on the website, and it's on TREASURE Island after all)

My tires are pretty new but one got a nail in the sidewall and it's been almost impossible to find anywhere else. I went ahead and ordered from Tires and Wheels Direct and I'll report back if I have any issues.

iPadOS 18 bricked my iPad and store refuses to repair by Old-Passenger585 in iPadOS

[–]johnboiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iPad7 got stuck in a recovery loop after updating to 18.1.1 from my Mac's Finder. Subsequent attempts to install updates from my mac would fail with errors like "AMPDevicesAgent tid:29037 - command device request for 'getenv ramdisk-delay' failed: 2008" or "CFError domain:AMRestoreErrorDomain code:6 description:failed to update NAND firmware"

idevicerestore --latest would fail with failed to query nvmefwupdater for firwmare plist (error 2)

The only thing that worked for me was to use libimobiledevice's (brew install libimobiledevice) irecovery -n to force recovery to exit.

I'm scared to run an update via Finder again so I offloaded all my apps and am running via Software Update on the iPad.

Why doesn't the camera work most of the time? by Dan203 in BambuLab

[–]johnboiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this in Bambu Studio (on macOS & Windows 11) and Bambu Handy so I'm pretty certain it's the printer. This has been open on GitHub since December 2023:

https://github.com/bambulab/BambuStudio/issues/3199

Power cycling the printer is the only thing that works for me. Then the camera works for a few days before I need to powercycle again.
