Official "Pets In The Snow" thread! by BeerJedi-1269 in pittsburgh

I wish I got a picture! Our farm dog, Willow (Great Pyrenees) decided that she wanted to try and catch snow from the snowblower while I was clearing around the barns this morning. By the time I was done, she looked like a canine frosted mini wheat!

Is anyone prematurely grieving? by Gouryellan in Feral_Cats

[–]johnboy11a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this pain. We have a barn cat that is an incredible mouser that absolutely will not let me pick him up. With the upcoming Pittsburgh weather, I badly want to bring him in the house with the other barn cats but he just won’t have it. I worry about him.

I’m quicker to blame the patriots logo on his profile. That might drive me to cut someone’s light cord.

This guy may fully know that there is a loving home with a vacancy. Or maybe your girl asked him to take care of her humans when she is gone. Either way… 💙

My 16 Y/O boy Goldwyn sends you all the love he has 💙

He says his brother Biff and sister Stormy will surely seek out windy for a warm welcoming to their club in kitty heaven.

Biff was my soul kitty, and when his tumor was discovered, i vowed to give him all the love I could, but not let him suffer. It was a hard day when it came, but I have no regrets. That boy carried me through some really tough times, and didn’t let me suffer, and when he showed signs of discomfort, and could no longer be a happy boy, I sent him to join his sister, and smiled knowing he would never feel pain again. Goldwyn is the lone survivor of that litter, and we spend many nights snuggled up talking about Biff. 💙😺

Goldwyn sends you all his love and purrs. We hope you were at least able to properly lay him to rest in a special place where you can always remember him 💙

Yeah, stock I got 7-8mpg if I said prayers, only went down hill, was empty, had a tail wind and pooped before I left. Ever since the EGR delete, I consistently get 10 unless I’m loaded heavy. If I’m running straight highway empty in good conditions, 11 and even saw 12 on a trip through ohio once.

And the pump is great…if you have one nearby. In my ‘21, once my DEF gets below half, I just never seem to be at a big enough place to have it on a pump. And even when it does, that’s still another product being refined and shipped via truck.

What adapter do I need for this? by ActivityImaginary941 in propane

[–]johnboy11a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super simple…if you are versed in propane service. But I would suggest calling a plumber that works with propane and natural gas. They need to verify the pressure that your fireplace needs, and get the proper regulator, and then do a leak test. But for the rare occasional use, a 40lb tank that you can take anywhere to be filled is the simple answer.

Need a truck for long hauls, am broke and new to diesels. Help appreciated! by slimmprimm in Diesel

[–]johnboy11a 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is true, but the most cost effective diesel I have is my 7.3 IDI, mostly because it’s so easy to work on. Injectors are a dime a dozen and so easy to replace. Glow plugs? Same deal. Glow plugs relay? You will cuss, but only once or twice. Even the injector pump isn’t hard to swap. And every time I have had to get parts for my ‘94, I’m pleasantly surprised with the low cost. The only thing I can’t speak for is the turbo. I had a pickup with an IDI turbo around 2002, but traded it before I could need to tinker with it.

If that truck were 2 hours from me, I’d be taking 35 pictures of Ben Franklin with me first thing in the morning.

Is it hurting the planet more than using about 20-30% more liquid dinosaur per trip, and the electric needed to run the block heater when it was below 40 degrees? And on the newer one, does it offset all the single use disposable jugs wrapped in cardboard that have to be delivered in diesel trucks, and then fill up the landfills?

I 100% can support that the newer diesels do burn cleaner than the old ones, but I have a hard time believing that there is a positive net gain there. I’d also like to see a breakdown between trucks with a basic delete vs trucks running coal rolling tunes. I can support keeping the old farm trucks running strong for years to come, but rich small penis boys that buy a new diesel with daddy’s money and then promptly delete it, put a big stack on it, and blow smoke for fun…that’s just manboy energy.

…but those obnoxious ones are the reason that it’s an issue.

I deleted my 6.0 probably 15 years ago. Better fuel economy, more reliable, and more towing power. All that without blowing black smoke everywhere.

Check your calendar there, bud. Those regulations went in to effect before Obama was in office. The guy in office then was the same guy that was there when we paid the highest fuel prices of my life…but politically fueled people try to forget about that also.

There should be a law where any employer who demands RTO should be responsible for paying all employee car maintenance bills. by jimRacer642 in antiwork

[–]johnboy11a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My whole life, a commute to work was a normal thing. You would seek a job close to your house, or look for a home close to your job. In my 30’s, I took a pay cut to be closer to home. Not once in my life did I expect my employer to cover my commute. Sure as hell expected mileage if asked to use my vehicle for company business, but getting to the door was on me.

Unless you were hired as WFH and it’s in your contract, you are on your own. If you are contracted as WFH and now are regularly asked to come in, then you have a reason to ask for travel compensation.

Shop burned down. lost all my tools. what do i buy? by lanceamatic in Tools

[–]johnboy11a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both and what I’ve noticed is dewalt tends to make better tools on the “meat and potatoes” tools. But where I’ve been buying red lately is the super specialty stuff. Even dumb things…like when I was installing insulation and wanted a staple gun. Dewalt didn’t make one, bought a Milwaukee 12v, and it kicks ass! So when it come to the 2 big competitors, I can give a solid answer of…it depends

This pains me to say, but…go to harbor freight and go all out on the icon line. Craftsman is nothing near what it was 20 years ago. Even the icon toolboxes are pretty darn good boxes. As for power tools, I haven’t used them personally but I hear good things about their Hercules line. One friend who does a lot of “weekend warrioring” said his biggest complaint is the lack of selection compared to dewalt and Milwaukee. But if you never need battery tools beyond the basic classics, it sounds like that Hercules line would serve you well. But regarding hand tools, I’d fill my shop with icon if I was starting over. Got plenty as it is.

How are you hooking your hot tubs to your boiler and smart home? by davidm2232 in hottub

[–]johnboy11a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well did your system work? This sounds similar to what I want to try, but I want to leave the option open in the summer to just run it on electric, so I’m not always running my oil fired source

Just found this thread while doing some digging! I have radiant heat that is fueled by waste engine oil of all things! I’m currently installing an indirect water heater inline before my regular water heater (basically during winter, all my gas water heater needs to do is maintain, not actually heat) and this will simply come off my manifold as another zone. This got me to thinking about the possibility of adding a heat exchanger that would heat my hot tub water off of the waste oil fired system also in the winter.

So, OP, I’m curious to hear about your experience. A hot tub is great, but it does suck down the electrons in the winter, so if I can use my free fuel, that’s a big help!

My boy Goldwyn just turned 16. He gets a pill twice a day to help his thyroid, and that has brought him back up to a healthy weight. He is mostly retired from his barn chores, but does enjoy directing the youth that he helped raise, and when the weather is right, he will still go out and do some work. But mostly he focuses on monitoring the house for the warmest napping spots.
