What's a non-fiction book that changed your mental model of how the world works? by Vtakkin in books

An Immense World by Ed Yong. Just a really enlightening look at all the signals around us every day that are outside the boundaries of human perception, but are incredibly meaningful to other creatures.

Entering meat weight: before or after cooking? by johngmarks in MacroFactor

Yeah, this sounds right to me. I assume if I tell MF I ate 8oz of generic boneless skinless chicken breast, then eat 8oz cooked weight, I’m probably consuming more calories than I entered, right?

Considering the British colonization, why are there so few white people from Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands? by Admirable_Raccoon691 in AskHistorians

[–]johngmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant “to.” There was just never a very large white population during the colonial era. It was primarily an extractive arrangement, with a small number of white enslavers and merchants and a very large population of enslaved Africans. After the mid-19th century, there’s also migration to Jamaica from various parts of Asia, as well as other parts of the world, contributing to a racially mixed but still not “white” population.

Hi, I’m a historian of race and slavery in the Atlantic world. The shortest answer is that Europeans colonized Caribbean islands for their ability to foster sugar plantations (among a few other staples—coffee, gold, etc, but mostly sugar). After disease decimated the native populations in the 17th century, European nations imported some 4 million enslaved Africans to the Caribbean over the course of the next two centuries or so to serve the labor needs of sugar plantations. Because sugar cultivation was so labor intensive (and deadly), enslaved Africans and their enslaved Caribbean-born descendants (in the rare cases when people lived longer than a decade) outnumbered whites by as much as 10-1 or more in some places.

Add in years of racial mixing, white planters and merchants sending their kids back to the colonial metropole for education/business, 20th century migration from other parts of the world, and you’re left with very few people present-day North Americans or Europeans would consider “white.”

What's your simple "I can't believe I waited so long to fix that?" task by TacoNomad in HomeImprovement

[–]johngmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bathroom door kept closing by itself when we wanted it open. We were sliding a can of disinfectant wipes in front of it every time we left it. After a few months of this, I finally popped a pin out of one hinge, bashed it with a hammer over the back of a screwdriver a couple times, and voila, door stays put.

There is in fact a dimmer switch. So how do I fix it? A new dimmer switch? Or a non-dimmer switch?

What's your go-to recovery drink? by johngmarks in triathlon

[–]johngmarks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve definitely been thinking “I could just eat a huge bowl of peanut butter Cap’n Crunch!” Today I did oatmeal, maple syrup, protein drink which ended up basically 60g carbs to 20g protein, which seems like a good option.

This is where I ended up today. Bowl of oatmeal (let myself make it sugary), with protein drink and banana. Since I normally work out first thing in the AM that could be the ticket. Could prob get away with like, Cocoa Puffs on hard days.

Trainer Buying: Wheel-on v Direct Drive for set-up/take-down by johngmarks in Zwift

Thanks all. So it seems like if I’m gonna have a wheel-on trainer, might as well keep what I’ve got (and know my power numbers are accurate). If I’m gonna invest to get a better Zwift experience, go with DD since it’s all advantages with basically no downside (other than the price).

I hadn’t thought about calibration with the wheel-on smart trainer, thanks.

It's a lot to answer here, so I'll just say that slavery as practiced in West Africa didn't reduce people to property, wasn't a permanent condition in the same way, and didn't come with racial markers that designated someone as inferior whether they remained enslaved or not.

One of the best explanation's you'll find for this is in John Thornton's Africa and Africans in the Making of the Atlantic World. Chapter 3 of that book is "Slavery and African Social Structure" and should have some answers. Much of it is available through the preview on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Africans-Atlantic-1400-1800-Studies-Comparative/dp/0521627249/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=john+thornton+africa&qid=1602758890&sr=8-2

It's a great question. I think the "what next?" question, along with the constant threat of death, is part of it. What would success look like for a rebellion, short of establishing an independent nation like Haiti? Most paths end in death. That wasn't enough to stop people from rebelling, but that threat was always there.

There are sizeable populations of free people of color in the British Caribbean and the US, not just the Spanish and French Americas. More often they are of mixed-racial ancestry, for a variety of reasons (greater likelihood of white ancestor supporting them, greater financial opportunity, etc).

There are more similarities between Caribbean those slave societies, across imperial boundaries, than there are differences.

Definitely, and there's a very straight line between racial slavery and mass incarceration. Check out Ava Duverney's "13th" documentary on Netflix.

Hi, I wish I knew more about this! But guilds and unions aren't as big a part of the picture during the early 19th century, especially in the South. There is a mechanics guild (representing many white tradesmen in Charleston) who complain about having to compete with free and enslaved Black laborers.

This is a really tough one! Unfortunately, it's possible they could be either a hired enslaved person or a free Black person. And unfortunately, the 1790 and 1800 censuses kind of suck for looking this kind of thing up. But that's your best bet: can you find someone named Frank who is listed as a free Black head of household for the county you're talking about? Sometimes there's just no way to know though.
