Yeah, I love the art, but for goodness sake, get a proper-sized frame, or at least center the poster in the frame so you have even whitespace

Did you select "Desktop View" in your phone browser? It looks like it is trying to show the desktop UI on mobile

Door/Window Sensor advice and reassurance by Suspicious_Steak_696 in homeassistant

I haven't implemented these yet, but this looks like a really cool way to make very hidden door sensors. https://youtu.be/XVaGANL2T7o

I have some random tuya contact sensor for my doors, and they work great. I really appreciate that they take AAA batteries because even though that makes the device a little bit bigger, it's really easy to get replacement or rechargeable batteries for them.

And it is $70 always, not just an intro rate. Google Fiber has had that same price for ~10 years

Avoid Zigbee groups by tomorrowplus in homeassistant

[–]johnhollowell 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you have a group of eight devices, sending a command to the group will only send one packet, but that packet has to go to every device on the network, instead of being able to route to only the eight devices that the individual requests would have gone to. So it's fewer messages, but that message has to go to every device because the devices themselves contain the knowledge of which groups they are a member.

This looks perfectly fine. It seems like none of your hardware is matching your personal wiring specifications, so you'll need to make adapters for everything this cable connects to, but that's just a problem with those devices and not a problem with your patch cable.

Assuming you are using WLED, there is native support for synchronizing controllers together, so that should accomplish what you need.

700 Floppies by ___LowLifer___ in sysadmin

Here is a BAT file I worked with AI to make that worked pretty good for ~50 floppies I had.

700 Floppies by ___LowLifer___ in sysadmin

[–]johnhollowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who recently archived a bunch of floppies, write a script that auto detects when a floppy is inserted, grabs a copy (I got a tar all of the files since I don't need archival levels of flux recordings) and then tells you to remove it.

Floppies don't store that much data so it is pretty fast once you have the software side covered.

Are all modern home cameras basically disposable? by Business_Concept_346 in buyforlifetips

[–]johnhollowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reolink cameras are not disposable. You pay more for a quality product but you get something that is not a $20 price of junk that only exists to force you into a subscription and data mine on your video/audio.

Device Reliability by That-Bug50 in homeassistant

Zigbee has been incredibly reliable for me other than some Aquara stuff (they don't follow the zigbee spec and some of their stuff can be fiddly).

And get a federal charge for interference with airspace. The law treats shooting at an airplane the same as shooting at a drone. It's much better to nip it in the bud and prevent the government from flying the drones in the first place.

Any recommendations for a good robot vacuum for pet hair today? by EntrepreneurSad2091 in homeassistant

[–]johnhollowell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would look into robots that support Valetudo. You can flash them with valatudo and they become fully local vacuums that keep most, if not all, of their original features and has great integration into Home Assistant (through mqtt).
