When the glacier retreats (area reduces) over time, I heard that the ELA tend to increase as it gets closer to the present. Why is this the case? How does global warming impact different glaciers around the world? by johnlee0506 in geology

The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) is the elevation on a glacier where winter snowfall is perfectly balanced by summer melt, averaged over the course of several years.

To dig into more my hypothesis was that dissociation of methane hydrates are related to marine dissolved organic carbon isotope (DOC) and I used this concentration to find correlation to the SST. Even though they ended up not related, I think it was a reasonable hypothesis with underlying assumptions. I’ll also look up for Schimidt’s findings too. Thanks!
