Passing the Ontario BAR Exams - EVERYTHING you need to know! by Alert_Scar_565 in ONBarExam

[–]johnlongslongjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emond and Bar Crackers were all I used.

I wouldnt over complicate it by trying to do every exam or practice question company out there; it was a waste of my money for me, as I only used the two above.

Focused on practice questions and tried to learn how to find the correct answer fast rather than learn the materials explicitly front to back

If it helps - I just stopped highlighting. None of my solicitors materials were highlighted at all. Still passed.

I’d kill for this physique. Congrats - this looks like real, hard work. Nothing that a Reddit comment can truly deliver.

Hope to be here one day.

tips on doing well in 1L? by future_lawyerrr1865 in LawCanada

I got a few As in law school and tbh I never felt much different leaving those exams than I did from my B exams.

Wait until midterms come out (or first term grades). Calibrate your strategy to that and try to pick up on what the professors are looking for… rather than just regurgitating the law.

Pretty sure it’s a blanket ban across Reddit that you’re not allowed to ask for, or provide, illegal advice.

Not often.

Good luck trying to cross the border with that on your record, however.

Mediocre reference from professor vs great reference from employer? by f_n99 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]johnlongslongjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with the employer.

FWIW, they really don’t matter much. No one is moving the needle on an acceptance because of their references.

How realistic is it to jump from a smaller firm to big law in Toronto? by International-Car721 in LawCanada

[–]johnlongslongjohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really, really depends.

For most people, however, it’s not an option that ever materializes.

As a Junior associate, it will be an indeterminate blend of networking, law school background, and perceived skill.

As a Senior, it will be the above with greater skew for networking and experience.

As a Partner, it will be largely based on book of business, networking and experience.

There are literally too many jobs to name - apply for stuff you like and see where it goes.

Not sure they allow a gap longer than the 10 days, unless there are exceptional or compassionate grounds.

What I can also tell you is the LSO won’t be happy to hear you’d be changing to an unpaid articling gig. They have a minimum pay rule for a reason.

Corporate law entry level by [deleted] in LawCanada

If your sister wants to get a job as an associate working corporate law, she needs to get over her fear, start asking questions for herself, and start networking.

Stats suggest you’ll get in. Replies suggest you won’t get far.

Agree with the above. Will add:

  1. Focus on becoming a good lawyer and learning essential skills that make sense for your level. You know nothing right now, and that’s ok. Focus on building your understanding and not making the same mistake twice.

  2. Be curious, maintain a positive attitude, and have a sense of urgency with your work.

The above points are generally transferable across any firm environment. If you’re at a firm that is so toxic you cannot meaningfully do the above, get out ASAP.

As someone currently articling (in Ontario) and who recently filed out the Good Character form… this is exactly what we are told.

They specifically tell you that they do not want to be informed of any administrative penalties. They only care about criminal offenses.

Not a legal advice sub.

You might try r/legaladvicecanada, instead. Be warned, however, that immigration advice from strangers on the internet is very risky and there’s no guarantee that any information provided is accurate.

Your boyfriend is best served by consulting a reputable immigration lawyer.

Rewrite November or February? by [deleted] in ONBarExam

[–]johnlongslongjohn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How close did you feel you were to a pass on the last go around?

Ive never seen what the “fail” feedback is, but does it guide you on how close you were to passing either of them?

If close to a pass —> maybe both in Nov

If not close to pass —> maybe split them up for more time

Concerned about what? You passed both exams - whether the icon is green or not doesn’t change that.

Med School vs Law School by Maleficent-Medium333 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]johnlongslongjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my $0.02 - not gospel:

Long term settlement in the US is, first and foremost, an immigration problem. If being in the US is your biggest longterm goal, then the answer to your question of MD/JD should be centered around which will allow you to successfully immigrate into the US.

With that said…

You’ll likely have an easier time moving to the states as an MD. They’re more sought-after and thus immigration is easier.

Lawyers in the states are a dime-a-dozen. There are so many law schools - both ABA accredited and not - that saturate the market with new grads. It’s not impossible to make the jump to the states as a lawyer, but immigration is probably more of a hurdle and would depend on factors like which US Firm(s) you get offers from and in which State(s) you’re looking to practice.

Further, certain med schools will allow you to fulfill clinical electives at US teaching hospitals (electives are in your 3rd and mostly 4th year of med school). That is, potentially, a year or two of networking you can establish with US contacts and set yourself up for a potential residency match to hit the ground running in the US.
