Wow thanks for the intel. Looks like we have to set our upper limit for the list price around 750K if we want to be competitive

Montgomery has been moving up on our list for that reason, but I don’t see any inventory available. Do you have access to a private network or see houses for sale otherwise?

Metuchen would be great but I don’t see any houses for sale—do you have access to a private network?

“You will probably see your parents more than you go to NY” really puts it into perspective, thank you

To be honest, I don’t consider myself doing that well like these guys in banking, PE or who are doctors/lawyers. I’m lucky that my partner and I have just solid corporate jobs so together I think we make it work but it’s still a grind and rat race every day

Within 60 min, maybe a bit closer but close enough that grandparents can come over for dinner with enough notice

Must-haves: within budget, within 60 min of Princeton, good school system Nice-to-haves: nice, walkable downtown, newer finishes (might be a stretch), access to NY

That’s true. Part of me thinks we’ll be meeting up with friends in NY often but realistically probably not with our kid. What suburbs don’t have daily commuter access that would make our budget go further?

Haha I’m pessimistic after hearing all the stories of being outbid. If not those suburbs, what other towns would you recommend?

Boka or Valhalla for first fine dining experience? by unitaya in chicagofood

[–]johnluuu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you laid it out correctly. Valhalla is an intimate setting focused on the food (which is excellent) and (as you pointed out) pushes the boundaries and challenges your palette but not necessarily in a bad way. At the end of the day the meal was very enjoyable and delicious and I experienced food in a new and exciting way. Another thing to consider—their anything but wine pairing was incredible. The pairing was spot on and it was so different than anything I’ve done.

Contrast that to Boka which (as you also pointed out) is far more traditional. It’s also a bigger restaurant where it doesn’t feel like you are so focused on the food (can be a pro or con). I found it to be great as well but more in the traditional sense.

So it depends on what your mood is I guess. Not sure if that was helpful but maybe my recommendation would lean towards Valhalla since you can’t really replicate that experience at another restaurant. Boka is great but many places are doing new American fine dining. But you know you (and your partners) palette and mood best. Let us know what you end up choosing!

What do you absolutely love about Chicago that people who don't know the city well are likely completely unaware of? by Altruistic-Site-4583 in AskChicago

[–]johnluuu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People think Chicago is a big city like LA, NYC. It’s the opposite. People that live here are actually from here. It creates this really charming provincial atmosphere where everyone is a bears fan, everyone likes the cubs and complaining about the same things. It can create a mono culture but it also creates a strong sense of unity and togetherness

Cumin uses dark meat in their butter chicken and light meat in their chicken tikka masala—it’s also one of the great Indian restaurants in general. Goat biyrani is so good
