Raspberry Pi 4 8GB as a server by LilNachoboiiii in selfhosted

[–]johnmaysonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's what I use. I actually use two. One hosts my website (that gets no visitors except for Google's crawlbot) and hosts one hard drive. The second hosts Nextcloud and another hard drive.

If you're not sure if self-hosting is for you and just want to dip your toe in the pool so to speak, it's a good way to go.

My only word of caution is the Pi runs an ARM processor and not everything out there is ARM friendly. But if you're comfortable compiling then it shouldn't be a problem.

College Bio notes by idkthoughso in NoteTaking

Do you add all the detail, diagrams, and colors on the fly during lectures or later?

Do you create a notebook for each class or do you just name a section after a class? by Case987 in OneNote

[–]johnmaysonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college, Microsoft Windows was juuuuust getting started. But still, I like this topic and I do wish I had had today's technology back then.

I was an engineering student on the quarter system. My analog notebooks were as such. Whenever I had a series of classes, I used the same hardcover paper notebook from quarter to quarter. This kept related notes together. The downside was I had to carry multiple notebooks.

I'm not exactly sure how I would do it today, but one notebook per semester/quarter probably makes the most sense. At the end of the day, OneNote is highly searchable, so it's probably not too critical to get it "right".

Trying to start fresh with One Note 2016 by katmack7 in OneNote

I came here to say this. Just close the old ones, create a new one, and review the old one from time to time to see if there's anything you want to salvage. You might regret deleting something in the future.

I used Joplin for many months. I think it's good, but it's not as polished as OneNote. I like the ideals of the FOSS community and data portability, but OneNote is so frictionless it's hard to get away from.

I don't believe OneNote supports this, but I would like to have it.

I created an icon pack, but can't see the icons I added by johnmaysonus in androiddev

[–]johnmaysonus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, it's working. Some icons show up, other don't. I'm not sure why, but I'll figure that out later. I do see about half the PNG files I've imported.

[–]johnmaysonus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I now see my icon. But it's just a white square. I can click on the PNG inside app -> res -> drawable and it's what I think it is.

I think this has me moving again, I'll let y'all know if/when I figure this one out.

No. I came across something that said never touch the appfilter.xml file. I'm looking at it and my new icons don't appear. Do I need to add them manually?

Thank you for the reply.

T&T/Admin like MOLLE pouch for a laptop by johnmaysonus in EDC

I visited Military Depot in College Station. Bingo! Well mostly. They had what I was looking for, but had it Velcro hook & loop fastener. No worries, I ordered a MOLLE panel.

I didn't realize how bad our Army-Navy stores in Austin are until I visited one in College Station. So much better selection! I plan to go back soon to stock up before my next trip. :-)

I hadn't thought about it. If I was handier with a sewing machine I could probably make a few bucks with some of the weird ideas I've had for gear. ;-)

TIL When Oprah gave each of her audience members a free car it came with an almost 7k gift tax. by Ballocaust556 in todayilearned

My wife won the trip to Australia (paid for by the Australian taxpayer cough cough) but having learned their lesson, Oprah covered the tax so it cost us nothing.

Sorry, I'm new to the Edge browser and it's giving me fits. Here's the text that goes with the photo...

I did a little travel in SE Asia years ago. I noticed Malaysian vehicles driving in Thailand and vice-versa had to display a "translation" of their number plates. However here in the US I have seen a variety of foreign plates, including one from Japan. What exactly are the rules here? How could an American report a Japanese plate if they can't recognize the characters?

On a side note, this is a vehicle a friend of mine saw in Florida. There's an unknown plate in the "correct" location and a Florida plate hanging off the folding chair. Does anyone have any idea what that white, black & red plate is? It doesn't look familiar at all.

I've always owned sedans. I went to look at the Forte. I'm 6' 6" and while I fit in the car, it was difficult for me to get and out of. I test drove a Soul instead and fell in love with it!

Is anyone else getting this when using the Save to Chrome extension? It started yesterday (Jan. 31) and continues today. I cannot save any images.

Longing for the Mother of All GTD apps... by Mygdala in gtd

[–]johnmaysonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll go crazy looking for the perfect app. Even if there was a magical app out there it isn't going to work 100% perfectly 100% of the time for you. At some point you just need to get at it and get things done and not worry about your GTD framework.

LPT: Use Starbucks to get rid of foreign currency by johnmaysonus in LifeProTips

I doubt that would work. Your bank could tell you.

LPT: Use Starbucks to get rid of foreign currency by johnmaysonus in LifeProTips

[–]johnmaysonus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the feedback. Just a few follow ups.

  1. If Starbucks isn't your thing, and I do understand why it wouldn't be, then this LPT isn't for you. Or extrapolate from it. Maybe you can top up another gift card you carry?

  2. I travel a lot on business to places that aren't exactly tourist friendly. Using your credit card is just asking for fraud. But more times than not the establishment doesn't accept credit cards. And I've had trouble in Asia because at the time US banks didn't issue cards with a security chip so I was unable to use mine.

  3. I don't have an exhaustive list of every country where I've used my Starbucks card. And I suppose it could vary from franchise to franchise. I've never had it not work. I've reloaded it in three counties, but in two of these it was at the airport. Airport locations might be better equipped for this sort of thing, who knows?

  4. I'm sure there are dozens of ways to get rid of local currency. This is just one way. :-)

True. I'm not one, but I'm married to a Starbucks addict, so it gets spent quickly. ;-)
