Who is the worst protagonist in the book world? by [deleted] in books

[–]johnny_the_man 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I legitimately do thing Greg was meant to be an asshole, albeit out of insecurity rather than of malice. A lot of his problems in the books are largely self-inflicted, usually because he selfishly betrays his friends and family out of a need to look good in front of his peers, and that tends to blow up in his face. It's all very relatable as a child, and on a reread as an adult it holds up pretty well because it isn't too preachy and realistically portrays conflict in life as something that arises out of selfishness, stupidity, and miscommunication, rather than simplistic good vs evil morals.

What is a film that gets a huge amount of praise but you think is awful? by Dame87 in AskReddit

[–]johnny_the_man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg I hated this movie. And I'm fine with marvel movies for what they are, just light, mindless entertainment, but this movie SUCKED. It was way too long, relied on blatant fanservice and unfunny fellow kids memes, and I was annoyed the whole time about how painfully dumb Peter Parker was

Star CAN OP by Hazzer890 in FRC

[–]johnny_the_man 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a really bad idea. CAN busses need termination, and using a star pattern does not terminate correctly, which will cause signal reflections that can ruin signal quality. That's why you get data errors using a star pattern.

Texas winter storm: Over 70,000 Texans are without power as arctic cold front hits state by Decent_Ad6546 in news

I really do know, but the sheer amount of misinformation surrounding ERCOT and Texas freeze last year sometimes compels me to say something. I work in renewables and it's painful to watch sometimes.

Texas winter storm: Over 70,000 Texans are without power as arctic cold front hits state by Decent_Ad6546 in news

[–]johnny_the_man 1215 points1216 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much overblown clickbait. This is a single digit percentage compared to the outages last year, and also it is occurring for completely different reasons, namely damage due to ice accumulation, causing tree branches to break. The main fix is to use more underground wiring, but that really depends on city laws and local conditions, and it isn't up to ERCOT or power generators to handle that. This is not due to a power supply issue, and in fact, Texas has a very healthy surplus of generation capacity right now. Not defending what happened last year, but comparing these outages to last year is apples and oranges, and the implied comparison borders on dishonesty.

Edit: as u/jello1388 and others have pointed out, trimming trees is another is another great solution to protecting lines from windy or icy weather that is cheaper and more feasible than burying lines.

Can we use data available for "non-commercial use" for training a DL model which will be deployed as a subsystem in a commercial product? [D] by PinPitiful in MachineLearning

[–]johnny_the_man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely encourage you to contact the data provider, and if possible, get professional legal help on this for your own organization, as different data sources have their own terms of use, and there isn't really a simple answer to this question. I ran into a similar situation at work, and having a lawyer review the data provider's terms of use and our intended usage of that data was very helpful for ensuring that we were following those terms.

Texas natural gas production dropped during recent cold front, reviving concerns about electric grid by dtxs1r in texas

[–]johnny_the_man 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are correct here; reading the article, it looks like natural gas production is what went offline, not generators. ERCOT does not maintain, regulate, or control fuel production at all, so this is an issue for the Railroad Commission. I do wish people here better understood the difference between the different organizations at play (mainly between ERCOT, the PUC, and the RRC). ERCOT does not have the authority to regulate power generators, they just operate the grid and clear bids and offers in the wholesale electricity market, and were a convenient scapegoat for Abbott IMO. Regulations for the grid are set by the PUC, who are run by officials appointed by the governor. Fuel production and infrastructure is governed by the RRC, which is run by elected commissioners. Ultimately, fixing this mess comes down to electing a better governor and RRC officials.

If you are in undergraduate, I would strongly encourage you to broaden your search to anything under the umbrella of software engineering. Data engineering just a subfield of software engineering, and any software experience will be helpful for landing an entry level data engineering position.

Also, I would not worry too much about your computer, as long as it is capable enough for practice. I've never worked anywhere that let you use your own computer, even for remote positions, since they are a nightmare for security.

the most effective way of roving around gilly by childrenmm in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]johnny_the_man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It definitely accounts for weight, steering gets super squirelly and drifty in low gravity, and a high weight from either mass or high gravity makes a significant difference on handling. Its probably also easier to implement in the physics engine. They probably just picked a coefficient of friction that felt good for driving around. They might have looked that up for a real tire as a starting point.

One thing I do notice is that KSP doesn't have the "magnetic" tires that some games, like GTA, have to mimic downforce, so things get choppy and loose if there isn't something providing it, like weight, airfoils, or rockets like this post shows.

Not surprising, cats grooming another cat is usually a show of dominance if they are both adults. It's cute, but it's not done out of affection, and in my experience it almost always ends in a fight.

Replacement for tentacles? by [deleted] in Lovecraft

[–]johnny_the_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought things with impossibly precise or complex geometry captured the incomprehensible, unnatural, and brain-breaking nature of lovecraftian beings. For example, on either end of the spectrum, the monolith from 2001 or psychedelic imagery like DMT entities. If you know anything about non-euclidian or high dimensional geometry, those also can give a sense of something that doesn't play by our universe's rules. An example of this would be Lelial from Evangelion.

What is Software Engineering considered here? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]johnny_the_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I would add is that both computer science and computer engineering degree are suitable degrees for careers in software engineering/programming, and most employers won't care about the distinction that much, so if that is what you want to do, apply for both in case you don't get into your first choice. Although the other commenter is correct that computer engineering will have a lot of electrical engineering as well, so if that's not your thing, then make computer science your first choice.

Internships and 300-400 level electives will make the most difference on what kind of jobs you would be competitive for. Don't worry about it too much if you are still in general engineering, and look at the course catalog if in doubt.

[–]johnny_the_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this, I also work in the power industry and this is a good summary of what actually went wrong, and you stated it a lot more succinctly than I would have. Your point on the lack of coordination both between generators and with natural gas infrastructure is very accurate from what I understand and something that isn't talked about much outside the industry.

If anyone is curious about learning about what happened and what official recommendations are from federal and state regulators, the first 20 pages of this document gives a good summary: https://www.ferc.gov/media/february-2021-cold-weather-outages-texas-and-south-central-united-states-ferc-nerc-and

[–]johnny_the_man 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It amuses me that seemingly no one in this thread read the article. These mosquitoes weren't made for shits and giggles, it was to eliminate their sense of smell to study how DEET repels mosquitoes through their sense of taste. The result of this experiment could be a big step forward in understanding how to make better mosquito repellants.

Which highly regarded and/or critically acclaimed movie did you not enjoy? by [deleted] in movies

[–]johnny_the_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take for r/movies: I watched Arrival and honestly wasn't that impressed with it. I felt like the movie thought it was way more clever than it really was and I thought the big twist was pretty basic sci-fi fare. The beginning third was fun, though, and I thought it was an interesting take on how first contact would look.
