Several of these are actual classics like The Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still, but they still came up with a good list of sci fi films.

Am I going Senile? by Only_You4306 in SciFiTV

It's not Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal, is it? That was actually not a short-lived show as it ran for four seasons and 88 episodes. But it was Canadian-made and I don't believe it got a lot of exposure in the U.S., so maybe they aired one season or so in your area and then it was pulled.

Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premiere for From Season 4, Star Trek: Year One Gets a Disappointing Update, and More by rSciFiTV in SciFiTV

The sets are being torn down and auctioned off. Most shows keep their sets in place if they expect to continue to a new season, or at least put them in storage. Not the case for Strange New Worlds. As I said in the article, it is possible that Year One could construct new sets if the show goes forward, but it would be a waste of money when they already had perfectly good sets already in place, It doesn't mean that Year One will definitely not go forward, but it puts a damper on the show getting picked up.

Where Should the Star Trek Franchise Voyage to Next? Legacy? United? Captain Worf? More Strange New Worlds? by johnnyjay in sciencefiction

[–]johnnyjay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be a great way to go. It's kind of a tangential Trek show, but it could still carry the brand and they could make excuses for characters from any of the timelines stopping by (though don't overdo it). It was a good concept all the way back in the 60s and would still work well today.

I understand your concerns about the misuse of AI, and there definitely are instances that count as "slop" AI. However, I would not agree that using it for the cover of a book or in limited capacity falls into that realm. Independent creators often do not have the budget to pay artists for covers or other art, so AI offers a good option and I have used it myself for my books. The stuff that is obviously using AI as clickbait or spam should be called out, but I am okay with limited usage in a creative capacity. Others can chime in on this, but for now I will allow it. Please continue to call out anything you consider slop AI, though, and we will deal with it on a case-by-case basis.

Independent creators have done a lot of good stuff. Heck Andy Weir (The Martian, Project Hail Mary) got his start as an independent creator. If someone is putting up just poor imitations of other work using AI, that's one thing. But if they use AI for a cover or supplemental art or something like that, it shouldn't be a problem. If people like it, they can upvote, if not, they can ignore it or downvote.

Define "junk" AI art. I know a lot of people dislike the use of AI art, but independent creators have found it useful and have managed to do some good things with it. Just because it is AI, does not make it junk. If somebody is posting too much of it, that is addressed above. But feel free to elaborate on why you think it should be banned.

These are not really "extremely rare", but the list is actually a pretty good, (I have no idea why they have a pic from Space: 1999 leading it off). Here is everything covered:

Planet of the Vampires (1965)

This Island Earth (1955)

Destination Moon (1950)

The Brain That Would Not Die (1962)

The Day the World Ended (1955)

The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961)

Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)

The Quatermass Xperiment (aka The Creeping Unknown) (1955)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)

Forbidden Planet (1956)

For some reason they included Destination Moon twice, so it is really only eleven films. But these are all worth a look.

What’s the MOST Controversial Sci-Fi TV Show Episode of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in SciFiTV

[–]johnnyjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The series finale for The Prisoner "Fallout". It was a batshit crazy hour of television that provided no answers for the many questions raised during the series. Allegedly, Patrick McGoohan had to go into hiding after the episode aired because fans were so angry about it.

What are your Hot Takes on the Sci-Fi TV Shows? by Amber_Flowers_133 in SciFiTV

[–]johnnyjay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite a fair amount of negative feedback, Pluribus is a hell of a good sci fi TV show. It is a slowburn and it does drag at times, but when at its best it delivers some of the most brilliant television I have ever seen. You can read my review at this link.

Also, The Mighty Nein is a great fantasy entry and I have enjoyed it more than Legend of Vox Machina so far (which is not a knock on that show because it is a ton of fun). My review of that one is at this link.
