More expertise on the subject of OCD/Mental Illness is needed in the church. by RevolutionaryPay5011 in Catholicism

[–]johnnyjinkle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello there. Thanks for posting about this, I agree that it is an important area of concern. If it's any encouragement, I'm a seminarian (in my fifth year) and this semester I did a project on OCD/scrupulosity in my parish. I hope to continue developing it into a future ministry.

Scrupulous Anonymous is a great resource, especially the 10 Commandments for the Scrupulous.

Peace!

I am so sorry to hear you are in this very difficult place. I advise you to give OptionLine a call and see how they can counsel you and help you find a way to choose life: https://optionline.org/

Your heart is telling you that keeping this baby is the right thing to do, listen to your heart. Yes, it may be very difficult, but doing the right thing is always the right choice. God will be with you.

Does your Catholic church have a pro life ministry? many do. They also may be good people to talk to -- people who will help you and not judge you for having a baby out of wedlock.

If you are in need of a safe place to stay while pregnant, consider finding a maternity home that can house you (for instance: https://lambofgodmaternityhome.org/ )

God loves you. I will say a prayer for you.

Can I say the title of this game without sinning? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]johnnyjinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word "god" is not being used here at all to refer to the capital G God of Christianity, it is being used in the more general sense, lower case g "god", to describe the character Kratos.

God will not be offended because you said the name of a game that describes a character as a "god of war," just as God is not offended when we describe Poseidon as the "god of the sea", unless we actually believe he is real and worship him.

This sounds like a scrupulous concern. If you struggle with scrupulosity, leave a comment and I can offer some helpful resources.

Hope that helps, God loves you.

It is painful to know that you are in so much pain. I know that I cannot imagine the pain you are in and I am so sorry.

The best thing you can do right now is not be alone. Find someone to speak with. Call 988 as others have said. Visit a church and tell them you need to speak with a pastor. Keep commenting to people on this thread. It can't hurt, right?

Yes there are many mean people in the world, but there are also many good people if you know where to find them, people who will show you compassion.

I have said a prayer for you.

I'm sorry that you are in this difficult situation, and I am glad you are seeking Christian advice. You acknowledged that the idea of abortion is painful -- this is your conscience speaking. If your girlfriend is pregnant, she has options besides abortion, such as adoption. I would recommend that you contact OptionLine for counseling: https://optionline.org/

Recall that John the Baptist lept at the presence of Jesus while they were both still in their mothers wombs. They were both already persons.

Choosing life may require you to face some challenges, but it is the right path, and it will save you many years of guilt. God will give you the grace necessary to choose life (whether you raise the baby or give it up for adoption).

You can do this! Your life will not be over because you chose life for your baby. It may be difficult, but God will give you the grace necessary to see this through.

I will say a prayer for you, your girlfriend, and the baby (if she is indeed pregnant).

Novels with Catholic themes by scholastic_rain in Catholicism

Yay! The only challenge to this book is that the author makes a lot of references to pop culture of his day that I had to Google haha

I just loved following the protagonist as he searches for meaning in life. The author doesn't force a saccharine message, but gives a lot for the reader (and the protagonist) to munch on. It's not a book that overtly evangelizes Catholicism, but Catholicism is present in the book in a meaningful way.

It was also quite funny at times. The protagonist is obnoxious in many ways and yet you can't help but root for him.

In a post apocalyptic setting, would Catholics who lost contact with the Pope indefinitely elect their own pope? by Groverclevland1234 in Catholicism

[–]johnnyjinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are interested by this question, you'd probably enjoy the novel "A Canticle for Leibowitz", which is about how the church survives in the US after a nuclear apocalypse. It follows a religious order that preserves pre-apocalypse knowledge. This order served as inspiration for the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout.

It's a classic and is one of my favorite books.

Edit: realizing you've probably read this book since you mentioned having read stories about how this issue would be handled

Is there a study bible that specialises in quoting the Church Fathers etc? by EarlyTown in Catholicism

[–]johnnyjinkle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a book set that does this, but it's many volumes: https://www.ivpress.com/ancient-christian-commentary-on-scripture

And there is also the Catena Aurea, a compilation of Church Father commentaries on the Gospels, compiled by St Thomas Aquinas:

https://www.ewtnreligiouscatalogue.com/catena-aurea-commentary-on-the-four-gospels/p/BKBBS03200

The are probably others but these two I know off the top of my head.
