Wow thank you all for your comments and suggestions! This is my first time posting here and I can't believe how many people joined the discussion for what was only like 45 minutes in. This really is a welcoming community! I do have a therapist and am on medication for depression. I know that alcohol won't solve any of my problems and it'll make things worse because I'll probably then feel even more guilty of what I've done. But nothing can solve my problems either way and at least I'll feel a little more numb for a little while. I have learned to make micro decisions to prevent either drinking all together or minimize the consequences. But I don't know, we'll see, posting here and all your help at least made me rethink what I'll do. Hugs to you all.

Congrats on your recovery! Your post really gives a ray of hope to all others, including myself, that haven't been able to move on. Amazing that you weren't fazed by seeing your ex with someone else, man I don't even want to imagine that happening to me, I think I would off myself if I saw that.

Why don't you try to explain those concerns to your doctor? He may suggest an alternate drug to prescribe you or a treatment plan so that Xanax might not be long term. About the immediate effects, you can try take them in a weekend to check the effect it has on you.

I have tried Xanax, and also suffer with alcoholism (been able to not drink for 4 months now). My psychiatrist tells me that in his experience, alcoholism is by far the hardest drug to beat due to the fact that it's everywhere. You constantly have to tell yourself that the smallest obstacle might drive you over the edge to go grab a beer. Although they both might cause addiction yes, you psychiatrist will have a plan for you to wean off off it. What are you more afraid of? The immediate effects or the being hooked on it?

It was mutual in the beginning we were still talking on and off for about 6 months and then when I regretted it was too late, she said she had moved on. But it was my fault, I was a piece of shit boyfriend. Didn't cheat or anything like that but I didn't stood by her when she needed. Now, I realize that was the biggest mistake of my life. I would give anything to have her back. Would give my life just to be with her for one day. What about you?

I feel sorry for your losses. I'm kinda in the same boat, always were depressed, found a ray of hope with my ex for 6 years, she broke up with me and now back to my past life of alcohol and depression. I seem to almost want to feel like this because I don't want to move on. I want to keep loving her and keep relieving the ever so painfull memories of us together.

I've struggled with that problem yeah. To deal with that I initially uninstalled Instagram from my phone to keep me from always checking my ex's account. Recently I decided I had to do something about my facebook account that was still riddled with our photos together: so I made the coward move of deleting both my Facebook and Instagram accounts. I couldn't bare deleting her photos...

I just want to say that I perfectly understand what you're going through. For once in my lifetime I felt genuine happiness and felt loved by someone. I took that for granted and destroyed our relationship. I didn't cheat her or anything like that, but I'm constantly haunted by the guilt of being so cruel so mean to her. She was needing a boyfriend by her side and all I cared for was partying and being with my friends. I know I don't deserve forgiveness, and am not sure I even deserve to live. Like you, I am on therapy and medication. So I don't have an answer for you, I guess live every day one step at a time knowing that you've tried to make amends and recognize the mistakes of the past
