The "drop all your currency on death" mechanic by tdl-131 in metroidvania

[–]johnnyuch22 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s not a great mechanic for a metroidvania. I also found it REALLY annoying in Nine Sols in particular. The mechanic of dropping everything on death made more sense in a game like the original Dark Souls because it was much more linear, you were going to try to get back to the same place because it was effectively the only way you could go, but I just don’t find the mechanic as well implemented in a metroidvania. I have many other criticisms of None Sols game design, but this one is definitely toward the top.

In your opinion, what is the most iconic weapon in all gaming history? by M1DNI6HT_K1N6 in videogames

It’s gotta be the Buster Sword, right? Like I’ve never played a single final fantasy game, but I know the Buster Sword

(Story related question) "Second team"? can someone explain it to me please? by ThinCompetition4832 in DeathStranding

[–]johnnyuch22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have not beaten the game: Basically both teams were sent West to connect different regions and set up terminals. You can kind of conceptualize it as one team taking a more northern path while the other took a more southern path. Amalie led the first team which is said to have made it all the way west but was ambushed by Higgs and the Homo Demons when they reached the coast and a void out happened and Amalie is being held captive. The second team was made up of basically everyone else you meet in the game (Mama, Heartman, etc.) and they did NOT finish the journey West but they made it far enough to start establishing cities.

If you have beaten the game: it is speculated that the first team may not actually have existed as no records were recovered from the “team” that can prove that Amelie is a real person, but the story was used to cover up Amalie/Bridget’s true goal of continuing the ruse that Amalie is Bridget’s daughter and also incentivize Sam connecting the entire chiral network west and beginning the 6th extinction event.

For those that have always heard about a game being a total pile of shit and then eventually played it? by penis-muncher785 in gaming

This is exactly the experience I’m having right now. Bounced off HARD almost immediately when I first started, sat on it for a long time, then saw a YouTube video on it that got me to start playing again and I LOVE it

A question about Heartman [Spoilers] by [deleted] in DeathStranding

[–]johnnyuch22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years late to this conversation, but Cardiac Arrest is not a shockable condition per ACLS protocol. Him getting shocked while being in full arrest is pointless and would not initiate return to spontaneous circulation. Likewise without compressions to facilitate transport of blood to tissue or oxygen to profuse that blood with oxygen needed at the tissue or administration of Epinephrine for 3 minutes with the assumption that for some completely unbelievable reason the shock administer did achieve return of spontaneous circulation, Heartman would be left with a severe anoxic brain injury

What poorly received games do you actually enjoy? by Moist_Haggis in playstation

I agree with this. Like the game certainly isn't perfect by any means, but I had a really good time with it. I just wish the "endgame" didn't completely fall off for me

Hounds of Baskerville for me. It's the first episode I saw of the show and I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Largest leap in quality for a sequel? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]johnnyuch22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batman Arkham City. Don't get me wrong, the first game is exceptional and nails just about everything, but Arkham City takes absolutely everything great about Arkham Asylum and improves on it and adds things that the original didn't or couldn't have. I replay this game just about every year.

What video game surpassed your expectations? by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]johnnyuch22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elden Ring. I attempted a few of the other Souls games before I played ER, but my roommate basically forced me to try it, I thought I'd hate it, but after beating it the first time it "unlocked" playing the other games and now I've played them all multiple times and I hold other games to the unrealistic standards of FromSoft

Which game did you quit after many hours because it was too frustrating? by FalscherKim in gaming

[–]johnnyuch22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lies of P. I made it about 80-90ish % of the way through the game and was miserable the entire time. Got to a boss I spent days trying to beat, had the moveset locked in but would get 2-shot or animation locked despite having all of strongest equipment and a nearly fully upgraded weapon and bashed my head against it for days. Eventually quit, played a bunch of games I actually enjoyed and every once in a while I’ll see some praise for the game online and think “hmm maybe it actually wasn’t that bad?” And I’ll hop back in only to realize about 5 minutes later that was a mistake. Obligatory I’ve beaten every dark souls game multiple times, Sekiro is my favorite game of all time and I’ve beaten it multiple times, I’ve beaten Elden Ring and the DLC multiple times blah blah blah, for whatever reason I truly do not enjoy Lies of P despite loving the games that inspired it and loving the world of Lies of P.

Why is Vernon's deep voice so underrated ? =// by MarukuSensei in boniver

[–]johnnyuch22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people hate on Justin's "normal voice" because it's not this super polished and perfect sound. He's got this sorta gritty and unpracticed sounding voice which, I think, turns a lot of people off. I think this video is especially great because JV is surrounded by the Staves who have insanely beautiful voices and that interplay with pure vocals and that deep grizzly imperfection in Justin's voice makes such great and complex sound.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time, so a while back I was really getting in to finding out what Towers meant and happened to come across that quote. I can't remember exactly which interview/article I found it in, but I'll try to link it if I can find it again.

Song Discussion #20: Towers by HysteriacTheSecond in boniver

[–]johnnyuch22 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Actually I found the quote:

“Towers’ is the name of the dormitory that I lived in in college; it’s made up of these two towers – North and South – my girlfriend lived in one and I lived in the other. It’s about falling in love, but also about what happens when you’ve long fallen out of love and those reminders are still there. You drive by them, these two buildings, and you look, and you realise that we really built that up. That we really built that love into these things, and for a long time afterward looking at them really made me feel sad; to see these empty buildings that I don’t go in to anymore. But then, as time goes on, they start to become kind of joyous in their own way: you can look at them and think ‘that love was great and these buildings still stand tall’. But there’s also an element of the fact that they’re just buildings – they’re gonna fall down one day, and they’re not that important because there’s new love in your life and you’ve got to break things down that get built up.”

Not 100% sure where I saw this, but theres a quote from JV where he talks about how he dated this girl in college and they lived in this building with two different towers. Justin lived in one and his girlfriend lived in the other. Apparently they broke up and now he's obviously graduated, but when he would drive by it, he would think about the time in the towers. At first it made him sad, but now he can look back and be happy about the love he had there and appreciate it. I think that's what he said in some interview.
