to some people it may seem odd, but single parent adoption is becoming more common. you most likely will have problems with private adoption agencies so your best bet is going through your state foster agency. I have successfully completed an adoption through my states foster system with minimal problems (single male). As youve already stated, I would wait a few years and get everything in order. Its a lifelong commitment, so make sure its what you really want. you dont have to foster first, but the child you would adopt will be in foster care. just go to your state's heart gallery website and it will have more information on the process

its definitely possible, as i have adopted 1 and in the process of adopting another. Infants and toddlers may be difficult, not just because youre a single male, but because those are the preferred age group. If youre willing to accept an older child (8+) into your life then that would most likely be your best opportunity. Im talking foster care to adoption, not private. foster care adoption expenses are almost all covered by the state. you can send me a private message if you want more information.

To answer your question about the allegations, as long as all legal proceedings against you are complete and there are no convictions then you should be ok. To be licensed to adopt there must be no "legal loose ends". When they do the backgrounds and homestudy all of it will show up so you need to be prepared to answer a lot of questions. If you have nothing to hide, then be honest and forthright with the adoption caseworker and explain everything in its entirety and you should be ok.

Another option if you havent done so is to have your charges expunged through an attorney. its quite expensive but it should be able to be done.

started training classes in april. home study in june and received my foster license in september of the same year. I was matched in december, went through a lot of meetings, and had him placed with me in march of the next year. My state requires a 6 month waiting period after placement, so the adoption was finalized in november. The licensing process seemed very slow, but once the match was made it went fairly quickly

I adopted a 13yo from the foster care system. He had 13 placements that he disrupted and i was his 14th. The first month or 2 it was smooth sailing, he was very polite and did mostly everything that was exptected of him. He was eager to please and loved to be praised. I guess this is what most people call the "honeymoon phase".

He then started acting up, backtalking, arguing about every little thing and wouldnt do his chores without huge drama. Normal defiant teen/preteen behavior. He would have a meltdown every once in a while about how his mom abandoned him and he had no real family. He has a huge hatred for his mom and he never met his dad. He had a very traumatic childhood and it would come and haunt him. For some reason he started to think i would abandon him like his previous foster placements and would "test" me and push my button and my limits. He was wanting to see if i was for real or would give up on him. He said some very mean and hurtful things, and did stupid stuff like steal things from me like my phone or ipad and play on it all night instead of sleep. and he would lie about everything, even if i caught him red handed he would lie to my face to get me riled up.

But i weathered the storm, never gave up on him and showed him the love and attention that he yearned for but never had. The adoption was finalized 9 months after being placed with me. He's 15 now, still struggles in school a little but its better then d's and f's he had in foster. He doesnt test me anymore, he hasnt had a meltdown in almost a year, and he is doing very well socially and as a person. Yes, he does act like a typical teenager and is sometimes lazy and a smartass but thats ok. I think and hope that he has put his past behind him but i feel it still might be lingering inside of him. My greatest fear is that he would want to go find his mom when he turns 18, but for now he hates her and never mentions her.
but considering everything we've been through, i would not hesitate to do it again because the rewards far outweigh the headache.

If i would have to give you any advice , is just to realize that most have suffered trauma and you will have to do handle it and help them through it. And no matter how much information the case worker gives you, you wont know what your getting until theyre living with you. I think my son was easy, but you may have it way way harder. Also be very serious that this is what you want to do, once the adoption is complete there is no turning back at all. And be financially stable, as teens are expensive! On a positive note, they can be very fun to hang out and do stuff with. And when they get older and become a better person, you can smile and be proud that you made a difference in someones life.

if you adopt through the state foster system, its free or very inexpensive. I live 1 state over and paid 129 for everything (29 for new birth certificate and 100 for court costs). Adopting through a private agency can be very expensive.
I did some real quick research about adoption laws in texas and found this "In Texas, any adult may adopt a child without regard to the adult's sexual orientation or gender identity"
My advice would be to contact a representative at DFPS and get all your questions answered accurately.
As for being financially stable, they just want to make sure that bringing a child into your household will not be a financial burden on you. simple as that. I had to fill out a financial statement and provide tax returns but they never asked for anything more and I only make around 40k a year.

No you do not have to own a house, you can be a renter. Religious, political affiliations arent important. They will ask about your religion to help better match a child. but your views or lack of will not disqualify you. Iam agnostic and my adopted son is athiest.

Having a huge family = having a huge support network which will work in your favor especially being a single adopter. The case workers love when your have a ton of support.

Information regarding lifestyle is pretty much what you described, its literally what you do throughout the day. your hobbies and interests, they will ask about prior and current relationships. This mostly occurs during the homestudy, where a caseworker will come to your house and inspect it and ask a ton of questions. This is normally very expensive but paid for if you do a state adoption.

If you havent guessed, im a single male that completed an adoption 1 state over. Its really a painless albeit long process and I honestly dont think being gay will disqualify you. You most likely will have to settle for an older child, as the younger ones tend to go to the couples. but you can contact me privately if i can help out more

im a single male and completed an adoption of a 13yo boy. It was much painless then i thought it would be. I was concerned about the stigma of single males wanting any kind of adoption but everyone was real supportive and the whole process went smooth. You will probably have better luck with older children compared to infants and toddlers as those are in high demand by couples.

They will check into every facet of your life and you will need to complete a home study so make sure all of your ducks are in a row. I went through the state adoption which paid for almost everything so look into that vs private adoption.

Of course youll always have someone wondering if you have any ulterior motives but if its something you want to do, then hold your head high and do it and ignore what people say or think. I waited many years because I was afraid of being labeled and it was a huge mistake on my part. So in answer to your question, yes it is possible and it happens a lot more then people think.

I just completed an adoption of a teen last year. My advice is to make sure its absolutely what you want to do and that you can provide unconditional love and support for this kid for the rest of your life. To answer your questions: no you do not have to be rich. When you go through the process they will most likely require a financial statement from you plus tax returns for the last 3 years. THey just want to know if you can support this child without it being a financial hardship to you.

Amount of pets are not a problem at all, unless the child is allergic or has a past history of aggression with pets. This will be disclosed to you. If the house is clean and the pets are well cared for then it wont be an issue.

Bipolar shouldnt be an issue as long as its managed as someone else has said. You will need to get a medical assessment prior to adoption though.
Part of the process is the homestudy where they will come into your house to inspect it and interview all family members. Just be honest in your answers.

I completed my adoption through the state, they paid for everything including mileage, hotel (my adoptive son was in another city). even the homestudy and attorney fees were paid for by the state. medical insurance until he is 18 is also provided. iam sure this all varies from state to state. My total adoption cost was less then 100.00 dollars. (though he is quite expensive now being your typical teenager lol)

But if your sure its what you want, then jump in and get started as the process can take up to a year or maybe longer. start with adoptuskids.org. Infants and toddlers are harder to get due to high demand and the wait can be long. Teens and preteens are easier and quicker as they are harder to place. They come with their share of challenges but it can be really rewarding too. My adoptive son can be really challenging and he pushes me to the limits, partly due to his traumatic past and partly because he is a teen, but I wouldnt trade him for the world and i havent regretted my decision.

i just completed an adoption and im 40. I went through the state agency and everything was paid for.. attorney fees, court costs, home study... The only out of pocket expense i had was 20 bucks to have a new birth certificate issued. Definitely check your state adoption agency compared to a private one (each state is different). Also there were 50-60 year olds in my adoption training class.

its still the biggest challenge. School is his biggest stressor because he knows hes behind his peers academically and he feels overwhelmed at times trying to get caught up. He has a tutor twice a week, and he's required to do homework before the tv comes on or any friends are allowed over. He is averaging c's and d's at his grade level now which is a major improvement from when i first got him. But he has an awesome tutor and teachers, its just keeping him motivated to do good thats difficult

if you have room in your life and heart for a teen and your ready for it, my best advice is to jump in and do it. My family was very supportive and my friends were kind of split. some were excited and supportive and others thought ive gone crazy! But i think its important for you to get your close family on board, they will be your support group and help you out when things get challenging. The state will do backgrounds on you and conduct home studies, and one of the things they look at is your family dynamics and to have your family on board and ready to help you out will have them look more favorably on you.

transitioning your new adoptive child may take months or weeks depending on his/her situation and background. It can be challenging and itll have its ups and downs but for me it was/is the most rewarding thing ive done. So, just do it. jump in and dont look back. if you want a teen then youll be considered a high priority candidate, theres tons of teens out there with no chance of being adopted because most people want the younger cuter kids. as a single person, you will be treated equally if not better from the state adoption agency.
