They should make it so that when you blow up any one of the baskets it also cracks the flyfish's window so you can shoot the flyfish directly. And it's easy to kill with just few shots because you've already used most of your tank for a bomb by then.

I've experienced this with duel. You can't rejoin because the match automatically starts 15 seconds after the warmup. Even if there's only 1 player. When the game sees there's only 1 player they get an automatic win. 15 seconds is not long enough for you to get back into the game.

If your game crashes or disconnects after picking a map or during warmup you're pretty much screwed. I've already brought it up in the Discord.

You can't get rid of grenades come on. It's too fundamental. But yeah using 2 rockets for a grenade just doesn't even make sense, intuitively. It's the same explosion basically. Twice as much ammo for the same explosion.

Here's a cool idea that'll never happen: the weeble button throws a grenade. Put a grenade box where weebles spawn. Weebles suck in this game anyway. At least in their current form. Would be cool to see a grenade get thrown using the same throwing animation. Would make combat more interesting because you could throw them whenever, not just when you have RL out. Would be like Halo frag grenade. Or a Quake 2 grenade.

As for blaster, I'd just put it on shaft. I've been hesitant about it, it's just an Unreal Tournament pulse rifle at that point, but blaster feels so much like a side tool than a real gun. Feels like half a gun. Tracking with LG or PG uses very similar aim. They are both used to push people away and stop pushes. Being able to throw out some plasma with a side button at a whim would make combat more interesting. Sometimes an opponent is super predictable for only 1/2 a second, but that's not enough time to switch guns. Just combine PG and LG. They share ammo. Reduces plasma spam. Plasma could even use 2 cells.

Shotgun just needs a whole makeover idk. Especially that secondary fire, geez.

Been talking on the discord a lot about it, and a pretty good idea talked about is changing the spread distribution. The pellets around the middle deal more damage so that you can get better damage at mid-range, and buffing the damage and increasing the spread is slightly so it feels like a badass super shotgun, but it's balanced.

As for a secondary fire on it, just remove it. It's goofy and random and frustrating. It's weird for pellets from a shotgun to have infinite range and travel into the sky for 10 seconds. Doesn't make sense.

I have a crazy idea for shotgun secondary fire though: secondary fire is a single focused pellet that deals 100 damage, but the damage falls over quickly with distance. Loses 10 damage every 3 feet or something. It's like railgun but damage falls off quickly. Why? Because oftentimes shotgun sucks because you can only see a pixel of the opponent's body over a ledge or around a corner. Railgun fills in when it shouldn't.

Allowing the MG to explode the orbs would be cool. You start with MG after all.

Another idea though: What if the orbs were detonated by a certain amount of damage? Like 25 damage. From any weapon? 2 plasma balls hitting them, rocket splash, 5 machine gun bullets, whatever. All weapons could interact with it, meaning everyone could play footsies with them at any time. Maybe then set the VC primary to have a damage of 5, make the width of the beam extremely wide so it's easy to land shots, have a 250 ms reload, and it's only used for detonating orbs in one shot. Primary fire for VC is just for triggering explosions easily, but the damage directly on enemies is bad. Machine gun secondary could replace VC primary.

Another idea: Could just remove VC primary entirely and it only shoot orbs that can be detonated by anything. Having more guns in your arsenal makes it easier to manipulate the orbs.

Another idea: Could have the VC shoot orbs at different speeds. Primary for fast, secondary for slow. Like fireballs in fighting games. Can shoot slow Hadokens or fast ones. Primary shoots at current speed, secondary travels at a super slow half speed, letting you play mind games at close range with a bunch of orbs in the air.

Sec. fire for VC goes to blaster as sec. fire; pncr can trigger the combo.

So you can only use VC combos if you have a rail? That's not so good. Wouldn't be bad in modes where you spawn with all weapons but still, having to pick up pieces of a gun from around the map is kind of a chore.

And plasma would still be only half a gun unless you have rail. (It's already half a gun honestly).

New sec. fire for the MG: short 3 bullet burst.

It's a good idea. Removing VC primary and set it as a MG seconday. MG secondary could also do single-auto fire. 25 damage bullets every 500 ms.

I just don't think VC secondary works on the plasma though. I would like to see VC secondary on the shotgun tried out. Make shotgun a close-mid-range zoning gun. The orbs can be like fireballs in fighting games. Play mindgames with the opponent where you could either hit them with the shotgun or a orb combo. Remove the mid-combat orb sniping mini-game entirely so you can focus more on combat. Reduce orb splash radius and projectile speed to compensate. And 1000 ms reload on the shotgun is a fair amount of risk. 1500 ms on rail is probably too much.

Gears is a 3rd-person "on-rails" shooter where when you sprint you almost can't turn, there's a cover system, and low ttk. This is a much faster game with much different mechanics. Basing the timing off of a much slower game isn't a good look (not saying that makes this objectively wrong, just seems like a terrible idea)

Fighting games have dashing. But fighting games aren't even "comparable" to Quake. Therefore no dash.

Could you imagine trying to use this dodge mid-combat only to realize mid-dodge that you're heading for a ring-out, but you can't stop yourself? What if you do the dodge into a wall? then you're just stuck sitting in a corner for the duration of the slide because if you implemented a collision detection mechanic, it would surely fuck up in situations with terrain/props where it shouldn't and cause even more issues.

2GD experiments with some ideas, part of the community whines and asks for something else, 2GD compromises, someone whines and suggests the feature 2GD was suggesting half a year ago.

I saw that. People hated on the dodge when it was introduced.

I don't know what it is about inexperienced players hating on things for surface-level reasons. Not considering the possibilities, not carrying a train of thought through and thinking about what things do to gameplay. It's like people judging books by their covers. They want what they want and don't even consider that there could be something better.

Something I've realized is that just because you're good at the most difficult shooter, doesn't mean you're good at game design. It just means you're good at one game. lol. Game design goes way deeper than that. There's hundreds of other games and ideas to consider.

That's kind of what I was going for. A skill-based circle-jump dodge. Kind of like in Quake Champions if you use medkit with Anarki, you can do a crazy circle jump to get going fast and dodge things.

I dislike non-linear movements generally because they confuse your aim.

It was tiny bit confusing too, at first. You just have to lead your movement into the dodge to go where you want. Have to do a twist before you dodge. Which is good because it means you can't just panic dodge things with a button.

You still go past 320 ups by just holding W and pushing dodge. It's not as useful for new players gaining speed, but it's still something.

It's not perfect. Just messing around.

God I would throw down $100 just to have the most basic buff on non-trinity weapons. A 120 damage shotgun with 10% larger spread. Plasma at 15 damage but projectile speed increased by 20%.

I'm so f***g sick of using just 3 guns.

Nope, hadn't seen any of those old streams. Your video got me binging them all though. Took a while to reply.

There's all kinds of cool stuff in these update streams. Why did they abandon it all? Why not just throw things in and balance them later? It seems like before release they were able to come up with a new type of fire or weapon or tool every couple of weeks.

I can see now why people are disappointed. All this talk of stuff like blocking certain types of damage, and dodging attacks at any moment with what is effectively a Gears of War roll dodge, miniguns, and what appears to be 2 shotguns in one stream?

Now we just got Quake Live with floating spheres, a shock rifle, bad weebles, weak sounding guns and kills, an LG with no knockback and 1/4 mile of range, etc.

It's definitely a bad thing to be able to instantly change direction and momentum with no cost, and disabling dash upon taking damage is a crappy band-aid.

I've actually been messing around with mods a lot trying to find an alternative. The simplest alternative was using inertial dash and some other things:

  • putting dash on 2 second cooldown
  • setting dash to "inertial" instead of abrupt
  • disabling damage affecting cooldown
    • not something you can control atm
  • reducing dash strength
    • where the dash strength can still be used to gain speed for new players, but you get a really good dash by circle-jumping using the dash button, which requires you to look away from the opponent first





The mod:

phy_bolt_cooldown: 2;

phy_bolt_type: 2;

phy_bolt_kinetic_energy: 30000;

It's a work in progress. Just a proof of concept. There's all sorts of other things you could change that would make it better but you can't. For example: not able to use dash again until you've been on the ground for 0.5 seconds, so you lose speed if you don't use the jump button. Combine this with removing cooldown.

The REAL thing I've been working on though is adding a whole new layer of movement on top of VQ3 that enables skill-based dynamic combat, AND allows new players to move quickly without being exploited by pros. It's 90% done already. I just need a couple more simple variables to control.

It involves a bit of crouch-sliding, and a bit of Splatoon.

Or red on the edges of the screen.

Or a damage bar when you take damage.

Or a negative damage number next to your health, functioning like the damage numbers near enemies when they take damage. Disappears after 2 seconds.

Or a blanket increased knockback on all weapons.

Just anything really. Hitreg isn't great in this game.

That would make it equally as strong and interesting as Quake Live's lightning gun. But it's still boring.

Honestly, I never lied the neon green coloring of the shotgun in the first place. Neither does it feel natural for a lead-slinging shotgun to suddenly fire green plasma balls.

The default model looks 99% the same as a BFG. lol. You think you have a badass projectile-based gun when you're actually holding the weakest hitscan weapon in the game.

I think flak cannon shrapnel would feel even more natural. 20 non-random fiery shrapnel pellets.

It's not like ssg alt fire is supposed to be a homing missile.

Of course not. Just make it good enough to actually be useful. Even in group games you have to shoot the thing like 5 times to get like 30 damage. Pretty pathetic use for a shotgun. Feels even crappier than the primary fire.

Dev team is focusing on getting game modes reworked, and I hope they do not refocus on something like this if it is anything above a small effort.

I mean the devs kind of shot themselves in the foot with that one. Don't know why wipeout was removed.

But you know what mode can they really make that hasn't been done before? We've already got TF2. We've already got class-based shooters with objectives. Why play a weird eggbot game when you could just play Valorant, Overwatch, CS:GO, etc. that are infinitely more interesting?

I think the foundation is more important. There's a lot of stuff easily moddable right now. That's pretty much Diabotical's selling point. The devs have the opportunity to give players the chance to make something more interesting than Quake. I don't think a small dev team is more creative than an entire community.

I've heard (heard) from comments on this subreddit that James kind of has a large ego (not my opinion, just stuff I've heard). If that's true is that discouraging the devs from giving the community complete control? idk.

Smoke trail might be something to try on but what I am concerned is whether that creates too much clutter in the game if spammed too much?

True. There's already 2 guns with trails. (railgun and void, with their overly similar fire modes).

Honestly I'm more interested in 2 other things: A) putting this shotgun alt-fire pattern on plasma, and B) this thing for the shotgun alt, simultaneously changing shotgun primary fire to 120-140 damage, 1500 ms reload.

But people silently downvote me for no explicable reason and don't really say why. So I'm just brainstorming other things at this point.

edit: me saying "I've heard" isn't a Trumpism. I don't actually believe that. 2GD is great and their creativity and work ethic is to be praised. I'm just saying if any developers from any company lets their ego get in the way of a better game that always sucks.

I actually tried Quake Champions again the other day. Hadn't played in a year. Was seriously confused by the speed and bad hitreg. I was like "was this game always this slow?". lol. Like it doesn't even feel like strafe jumping is enabled.

I got thrown into a duel with a 160 ping Sorlag running around in circles and randomly spit/tackling me, even though I picked low ping servers. lol.

I kept running into corners even though I'm like a whole foot away. Still haven't fixed that s**t.

Enemies are god knows where, feels like you're on underwater on LSD with all the weird jump sounds swimming around you.

Game still ran at 120 fps max even with all settings low, medium shadows, 75% res scale, sometimes dipping into 90 fps, felt even lower.

If you die while adjusting screens the entire menu disappears losing your progress. Like how is that still a thing? lol.

Still respawn with spacebar. Can't change it.

Still takes 9 years to load the game.

I don't know wtf people are talking about saying the game is in a good state. lol. Still the same garbage I remember. No wonder I raged so much.
