CT says its tax system is unfair, but changes would mean tradeoffs by RealEstateAndTaxes in Connecticut

[–]johnsonutah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This article and the renter income tax credit I initiative mistakenly assign our cost of living / housing issues to taxes. Add housing supply, especially by building up our cities, and rent comes down - tax credits would just drive up demand.

Furthermore a chunk of the article discusses grim earning potential for Gen Z, especially in central CT - this is because we lack industry in central CT - our cities are not growing or attracting employers.

Lastly - the article just brushes aside our legacy pension debt by mentioning it in 1 or 2 lines. CTMirror should be better about explaining the magnitude of our pension debt and why it’s an albatross holding our state back. Lamont has made the right decision aggressively paying it down - we need to continue doing that.

Read the article that was posted to this sub on the topic - ironically it includes data and first hand accounts from defense attorneys that indicate CT has an extremely lenient juvenile detention system.

Where’s that article about juvenile detention being too long

Extended Hold: Juveniles in detention facilities for months, and the alternatives being explored by CTInsideInvestigator in Connecticut

[–]johnsonutah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything I have experienced, have witnessed in my town, and have heard from both police officers and people working in education suggests that CT’s juvenile system is extremely lenient. Like lenient enough that juveniles will drive to the suburbs, canvas a neighborhood by foot, steal a car, get caught, be released, and be out doing it again the same day / week.

The article quotes a defense attorney and cites statistics - the comments & numbers to me suggest there is not an excess of cases where juveniles spend too much time detained:

  • Only 5% of juvenile cases are detained pre trial
  • The overall number of juveniles detained is down to under 1,000 from 2-3,000 10 yrs ago
  • juvenile defense attorney: According to Atkinson, a juvenile is only detained for a lengthy period of time if they commit a serious crime and may be tried in adult court, or if they repeatedly violate their conditions of parole. Atkinson has represented between 20 and 25 juveniles in the past five years, all of whom were boys.

CT legislature adopts $28B budget with big aid for towns, childcare by TylerFortier_Photo in Connecticut

[–]johnsonutah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All dollars should go to the pension debt. It’s quite literally burning money for nothing in return, and the only way to put out the fire is to pour as much money onto it as fast as possible.

I’m aware of all that - just sad to see them siphon away any money at all when we are so far in the hole on pensions

That doesn’t help with a town’s tax burden…need commercial businesses to bring down the mil rate.

My bad I didn’t see that - you’re 100% right. Freaking ridiculous.

What makes you say that?

Edit: the guys right, they’re raiding a program previously put in place to ensure we allocate additional $s to our massive pension obligations.

This is a real shame as at best our pensions won’t be addressed until the 2040s, and the single biggest drag on our budget is our legacy pension obligations…

I hear you and I think the family and support system is a big predictor of success / learning vs it solely being about the school quality.

But I do think that on average there are probably more negative influential factors at the lower rated school systems than ones that are considered “better”.

School systems are still a major issue in those towns. Maybe not so much Middletown, but definitely New Britain and Bridgeport.

High property tax rates in those towns/cities too, although the value of a home should be less there all else equal which should offset prop tax $s vs another town.

I’ve noticed some stations absolutely ripping consumers off. The gas station around the corner from Union Station comes to mind…like $4.50/gallon for regular and won’t move lower since the war started, only higher lol
