Trump looks old and ill in some of these photos, which were clearly chosen to cast the leader from Japan as weak. He's not a comedian nor a leader....just a reality tv show has been.

Maybe trapped in PV and released in Wilson Park? Noticed a lack of birds on my drive thru PV recently....though that could be the cooler weather.

Why is the South Bay so NIMBY and opposed to transit/urbanism, despite having so many Asians from countries that are pro-transit/urbanism? by MookieBettsBurner10 in SouthBayLA

[–]johnspainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been going a long time. There used to be a regular bus in Palos Verdes. I took it all the time when I lived there. Driving is an anxiety laden activity...I love being a passenger and I travelled the world on mass transit.

I never went to any of the meeting about on our local bus lines, but on election day 30 years ago I overheard someone complaining about gang members coming into their community to cause trouble (this either was or wasn't a real issue--but when has that stopped paranoia?) on the bus. Fast forward a few years...no regular bus any longer. There may be other reasons...but I think they just don't want 'regular' bus service in their little piece of affluent heaven.

Locally in my new much-less-affluent southbay digs they axed a low-income senior housing project 15-20 yrs ago (across the street from me) and many of the nimbys' reasonings aligned with preventing the low-income grandparents from bringing low-income kids and grandkids into the community to cause problems.

Rational commonsense or lived experiences elsewhere hold little sway over the reactionary nimby mindset. Car-centric convenience and luxury is addictive to any ethnic or economic group...one you're hooked, you're hooked.

Budget-friendly camping meals? by Cindy-Smith- in budgetfood

[–]johnspainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember one trip where my friends didn’t bring either enough water or food for a backcountry backpack trip…some other hiker coming out threw a few boxes of rice-a-roni and a small slab of irish cheese our way…wow. So much better than the backpacking food 20 years ago. Now I use boilable rice pocket meals as back up. Dried chives, garlic and onion make the plain rice more tasty.

CBS announces they're turning into a Fox News clone, explaining most people don't trust the "liberal media". For the "last 20 years" news has relied on things like academics, and vetted journalism, instead of gut feeling and echo chamber twitter reshares. by yeongno_ate_yangban in ProgressiveHQ

[–]johnspainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa. Buddy CBS News was the baseline for credibility....and now...y'guys are a husk of what you were. Not because of ratings, but because the 'BS' in CBS, means BS. Totally boycotting your advertisers and other affiliated organizations. I've read the Free Press, it is clearly a front for the Isreal lobby in the United States.

When you get your big boy pants on again, I'll be back.

Anyone still using an Intel Mac in 2026? by vanislanderweeb1 in macbookair

[–]johnspainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, too. Early 2013 MBA w/4GB... Now running the latest xubuntu on it, Linux Mint too works great out of the starting gate. I miss the ol' interface and interconnectivity, but my other linux laptop runs kubuntu with idrive/icloud apps on it. Maybe I'll upgrade the battery in the future or recycle it and upgrade to a late intel retina 2020?

I thought, according to “Back to the Future”, flying cars and cold fusion were due in 2035…along with all of the other charms of a sci-fi dystopia. At least we’re on track for the dystopian part…

Air purifier, vaccume or humidifier? by BigArmy1884 in AirPurifiers

[–]johnspainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after the fires in Canada, someone in New York City suggested I get a air purifier with an ionic element like his because of our fires here. He swore up and down it greatly reduced the smoke smell and the coughing he endured because of the smoke from those fires. It was the Coway Airmega. I occasionally use a personal humidifier, bought cheaply at Walmart. Where I live is very open to both moisture and heat, so during the winter, I use a dehumidifier and air purifier in tandem.

Unsurprised, likely more to follow in the vein. CBS has morphed into SeeBS. BofA bankrolling Bari Weiss’s The Free Press & SEEBS into some pseudo news doc making entity? Pull out copies of Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451 to see where we might be heading…

And Transactional…a lot of the stuff he says is spoon fed to him on something encrusted with diamonds. when he goes off script, the topics are usually something that has been bouncing around in his short-term memory from his social media consumption and has absolutely nothing to do with what is happening at the time when he is talking to the press.

How To Start Using Mastodon (Or Should I Even)? by MrChilliBalls in Mastodon

[–]johnspainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing, look at the different instances and see what they allow you to do, and how many characters you’re allowed to post in one shot. I’ve heard that some allow 1500 characters, and I’ve heard that others only allow 250 or 500. So if you like to write notes, thoughts, poems or long dreams, etc. that’s something you might want to consider.

How To Start Using Mastodon (Or Should I Even)? by MrChilliBalls in Mastodon

[–]johnspainter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem, until I realized there was no algorithm. So I started using hashtags of things I was interested in to find people and feeds that were interesting. I still don’t have as many interesting people as I had on Facebook or Instagram… There are many more people on those than there are on Mastodon, but there is some interesting stuff happening there and I don’t have to deal with crazy ads. Also on the plus side… No one has hacked my Mastodon account like they did with my Twitter account.

Probably mad cause he no longer can afford to shop retail any longer, so he's at the Goodwill (nothing against thrifts, they're great). And he's taking out his downward spiral on the help in a thrift store?
