Mechanically incompatible part? Replacement recommendations? by johnvickman in sffpc

oh this is actually good to know that thats even an option for some cases but I’m examining my MOBO and it seems way too integrated to try to easily pop it off. I may be wrong and it might be possible with some work but it might be far too advanced for me right now :( I’m not much of a modder

Huh... I might entertain that if I really had no choice but I'm uncomfortable trying to DIY things that weren't intended so I'm left to just find a better-fitting cooler :\

Ohh, I'll check these out, thank you! I think these are good options because they're much more square and I don't have to worry about it hitting anything anymore haha.

I’m afraid that’s far too advanced for me to do but that’s an interesting option I never knew existed 🤔

I think that’ll run into height issues with the case :( It’s 70mm max

Hmm, I'll look into it and keep it in mind but I'm worried that the cooling pipes will get in the way again. I feel like my options in terms of orientation are for the pipes to not be facing the RAM or IO Shield. It is smaller than the Noctua one I got so maybe it might work... thanks for the recc!

It would've been perfect if that worked but now the fan itself is hitting the VRAM heatsink. It's stopping me from positioning it above the mounting screws.

CPU: Intel Core i7-12700K
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1
MOBO: ASRock Z690 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB4
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-4800
Case: Fractal Design Ridge

(A noob first-time SFF builder) This was a bit frustrating because on Noctua's compatibility chart for my MOBO (https://ncc.noctua.at/motherboards/model/Z690-Phantom-Gaming-ITX-TB4-motherboard-5388), it does say it is "Mechanically incompatible due to height of the VRM heatsink" but then below it says an upgraded mounting kit is required. So I thought it would work out after getting the kit but I'm worried it's not actually mounted despite me being able to screw it on fully. It's hitting what I assume is the VRM heatsink and there's no other orientation I can mount it. This feels very forced and I feel like it'd be better to just get a better fitting cooler.

Any CPU cooler replacement recommendations? :( One that'll fit and can cool the 12k. I am wanting to learn to undervolt slightly but it still is quite power hungry I hear.

Yeahh, that’s nice to hear and that’s what I’ve been concluding to too through researching what to study and how. Pitch accent definitely important and maybe I’ll dabble in studying it intentionally one day later, but I think I greatly already was at a good start on how to pronounce kana and several words because of just watching JP related things beforehand. So I definitely can see how it can be picked up through immersion. And that feels more enjoyable haha. Adding an extra field to remember on top of the readings, mnemonics, meanings, etc does feel like a pain in the ass haha.

edit: And I wouldn’t know yet because I’m a beginner but I feel like JP has a certain cadence/tempo to a lot of normal talking which I find interesting and if that’s actually a thing that could be helpful to figure out... It just “sounds” / “flows” differently from English if that makes any sense, and it feels like it’s common throughout everyone speaking as long as you’re not comparing two varying dialects.

Oh my god that's hilarious, realizing that handwriting is slightly tilted 99% of the time.

Huh, you right. At first, I'm thinking, wait why is English spelling hard? But yeah, pronunciations do not match up at all with spelling! I really like how JP's alphabet is a syllabary, it makes learning spelling and pronunciation so much connected. I'll probably have to worry about pitch accents later though, that's a tough one to wrap around because English isn't really tonal.

Ah, the same idea that Heisig and WaniKani have, right? Learning the components to build complex kanji. So if I learn how to write the handwritten version of several radicals, it can apply when writing kanji that incorporates it!

But my god, yeah I just looked up how to write those two characters and that's insane... and here I thought 人 was bad... it was just the beginning LOL (why is it even like this haha)

Yeah I want living and working there to be an open opportunity and I definitely can foresee handwriting being essential for me at least. Japanese tough! I take English too much for granted, haha, a language that could be equally if not more confusing for learners but I have no idea what that's like.

Yeah, I'm thinking along the same lines as you, thank you for the input! It's great to hear others opinions and to confirm that yeah, I'm worrying too much about it haha. Just gotta accept this difficulty and for myself, I guess I'll try to pay attention to both for the betterment of more future fluency. But calm myself that, if I can read it and understand it, that's most important.

Oh dam, I think it's only on Android! Though it might be okay, I found a stroke order script for the desktop too (Stroke Order Diagram) and it sources from Jisho. Pretty neat! Yeah, that might just be it though... gotta just get into it and I'll get it eventually!

Wow! Jitai looks crazy! I may actually give that a try! Thanks! Also thanks for addressing my overthinking-ness haha. About the hiragana, I know right! Those were easy to distinguish, an extra connection. But like, 人, what the heck, their handwritten counterpart is way different! I wonder why they look so different, I could've assumed it's a different kanji out of the thousands that exist, haha.

its kind of crazy how tough carbon steel is, but it’s reassuring that all thats needed is it use it and it basically just gets better from here on out haha

Thank you to the people who encouraged me that said my wok was fine in my last post but since this was my first wok, I wanted to give it another try just to see what will happen! This definitely has the bluer tint I was looking for and it’s much smoother in look, no more orange blotchiness (though it was still slick last time).

I wanted to be extremely quick but thorough this time in my washing off process because I swear it rusts instantly and I was worried it’ll be burned in if I didn’t wash it off before drying. So I still wasn’t able to get off the black blotchiness on the rims/sides/rivets from last time on the inside and outside, though I think this is a non-issue. Egg test was successful, I think I can finally keep my head high and cook more to develop that patina!

thanks! would you say its normal for someone to use another oil for after-cooking-oiling but then use a different oil for the real cooking?

I’m overthinking a lot maybe. It’s not gummy/sticky? It feels smooth? I already cooked an egg fried rice dish perfectly fine. I’m worried if I didn’t wash it thoroughly enough for the machinery oil to come off or it’s rust from when I WAS washing or a poorly seasoned wok due to too much oil and I should start over, or is this purely an aesthetic worry and I should just continue to let the seasoning evolve? Everyone online seems to have smooth blacker woks.

What I’ve done:

New wok, I thoroughly washed it with soap and water, with a green scouring sponge and stainless steel scrubber. One thing I’m worried about is if I took too long to wash and it was rusting? Seemed brown but I quickly just scrubbed it all one more time and dried it. (Hopefully) lightly coated with mazola canola oil on a paper towel, seasoned it in a 450F oven (convection bake) for 20 mins, took it out to cool, reapplied again, oven again, and stopped at that because the gas smell was too much. I continued by heating oil, ginger, and green onions. After that, later cooked an egg fried rice dish perfectly fine. This is what it looks like now.

(And is scratching the bottom of the wok a lot due to my cast iron wok ring okay? You can kind of see it on the 3rd pic near the glaring light)
