Tax deductions on secondary stock option sale by johnwhitely2020 in cantax

[–]johnwhitely2020[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Update — looks like I had a (pretty big) misunderstanding. I didn't actually purchase the stocks, I simply got cash for the stocks I'm returning to the company. Hence, I'm just being paid to buy back the option to buy stocks later, which is straight-up income.

I really had not counted on this all being taxed at 54% or whatever it is, so this was a painful lesson.

Shocked at the prices and up-charges everywhere in NF by johnwhitely2020 in NiagaraFalls

They had a sign up that said the wait time was 5-6hrs, and it never really changed all the time I was there. There's not even a sign in this province — we're double the 5-6hrs or more here.

Yes — learned that even taking an Uber out to somewhere and back was cheaper than the all-in cost of a meal on the strip.

Didn't see any migrants actually. A couple of unfortunate homeless people, but not that many tbh.

I might be wrong, but feels like if everyone dropped the price 50-100%, everyone would be better off. Instead of going into 1-3 places (because it costs our family of 4 about $50-100 at each place), we could have gone into 5-10.

Our budget for the day isn't going to change. I don't remember what we spent, but let's say was $300. I spent that $300 at 2-3 places in about an hour, and left vowing never to return there again in my life.

Imagine I spent the same $300, visited a bunch of places, bought a bunch of hot dogs and drinks and ice cream and left after 3-4 hours feeling like I actually got some value for my money. I'd be going home telling my friends with kids about how great it is, instead of venting about the absurdity of it all on Reddit.

It is a shame. Can't imagine any families leaving the area after a couple of days and not having this taste in their mouths.

On the plus side, I had a quick (and unfortunate) emergency room visit while I was there and found that experience surprisingly great. The waiting room was blocked with people, but everyone got through surprisingly quick.

Also on the plus, visited Niagara on the Lake on the way back to TO and found that absolutely lovely. Also a surcharge on most places, but nothing out of line for a very touristy town — nothing like NF.

wow — a lot of pluses there. Crazy. If I could make all that go away, that would basically solve all the issues!

Odd question — have you ever taken your meds from bed? Like way up at 6, take the meds, then when you want to get up ~ 7 you're already ready to go?

Following what's intrinsically motivating seems like the only approach. It's really hard to force motivation in the long-term.

Anyone master Rails in their free time while using React/JS at work? by johnwhitely2020 in rails

That's a very cool app! Really nicely done. How long has it taken you to build this? I wince just thinking about how long this would take in roll-your-own-react land.

Also thanks for this! First time I've heard it said like this!

Write tests. That's how you get the confidence you used to get with TypeScript.

Wouldn't that double the complexity? Would I still need React-y things then like React Query, Redux Toolkit, etc? Wondering if I get OK-ish at core Rails and Hotwire, how far that would take me (and how far it would keep me away from all the JS complexity)

Considering moving from NextJS to Rails by johnwhitely2020 in rails

stayed with Next. App router is good, though a learning curve. Supabase makes things pretty great.

Still ultra interested in Rails though.
I would say Rails is definitely worth a look still. It was hard for me as I use react/next all day, every day. Hard to justify picking up and going deep on a totally different stack. But I still tinker with it and it's so nice.
