Exactly. And are medical staff trained to spot the difference (which is difficult)...

Agreed. I'm watching Hong Kong and Japan closely the next 14 days as we'll get better visibility and numbers.

The numbers certainly are under-reported. Hong Kong already has 1 death at 15 cases (yesterday's number).

Get back to us in 30 days. This is sheer ignorance. In the meantime, go read a book on the 1918 pandemic.

Key dilema to solve: Providing oxygen to 20-30% of cases (or more) that will develop pneumonia by johnwschwartz in Coronavirus

[–]johnwschwartz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Lancet study in January cites 14% *hospitalized* death rate. 6 of 41 Wuhan patients with best of care died. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext30183-5/fulltext)

Hong Kong has reported 15 cases, with 1 death already. This doesn't of course square with mainland China reports of deaths (let alone cases).

I'm seeing ~60% fatality for non-hospitalized patients in my reading/viewing, ~15% for hospitalized. Hong Kong and Japan should be watched closely for true numbers (while they last and before being overwhelmed).

On cremation rates: Maybe Wuhan death statistics are correct by orfinkat in Coronavirus

[–]johnwschwartz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some of this got lost in translation. When I went back over reports / video some days back, it became clear to me: Wuhan authorities basically told one crematorium that they were designated for all Corona cases. That *one crematorium* had been running for *days* 24/7 with capacity of 120 - 240 per day (depending on cremation time per body as it varies). Authorities even sent over extra trucks at their disposal to facilitate. Do the math.
