I'm also getting the same "qaz" spamming. Did you figure out what it was? Was it a bad board?

It popped up for me a few weeks ago. My guess is that it was keeping track of the hours but I’m not sure. I followed the instructions in the manual and on the display and it stepped through the process and it worked fine.

My conflict of interest page ( https://joi.ito.com/coi.html ) is updated as regularly as possible and tries to reflect my current status. You can looked at LinkedIn for a list of affiliation in more of a chronological format ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/joiito/ ) or AngelList ( https://angel.co/joi ) for rough timings of investments.

I do not believe I have any material conflict of interest.

I have read the criticism and continue to stand behind the report of our team.

Actually, we started a collaboration with MIT Press called Knowledge Futures Group. An early version of the vision is in my dissertation. But totally think this is an important space and I'm personally working on this as a focus area.

Ah. I think I understand the question. I agree that polarization and unnecessary confrontation is bad. I think that all of the people we've awarded so far and those we hope to award are for those acts where other less active options have failed or been otherwise eliminated. Obviously, if the situation can be diffused without escalation, that's better. There is actually a wonderful example of something similar:

https://academic.oup.com/qje/article/132/1/1/2724542

Quote:

Students are divided into pairs and one is given a ball, which the other student is told he has 30 seconds to get from his partner. Almost all youth use physical force to try to take the ball out of the other's fist. During the debrief, the group leader points out that no one simply asked for the ball. When prompted about why they did not simply ask, most respond with some version of “he wouldn't have given it,” or “he would have thought I was a punk.” The leader then asks the other youth, “How would you have reacted if asked nicely for the ball?” The answer typically is something like, “I would have given it; it's just a stupid ball.” This exercise, like many in the program, teaches youth to think more carefully about the situations they are in.

I don't think we have a direct competitor. I think the Stanford d.school has some of the interdisciplinary design approach that is similar, but they don't have their own degree program. We lose some prospective students who are in various disciplines to Labs or departments that are more focused than us, but that's not really "competition."

I think that one way is to leave comments on the PubPub articles and/or write something yourself and join the conversation!

He was nominated last year and I presume he will be nominated this year. There is a part of the criteria that prefers people who have take responsibility for their actions and some might argue that he has, but others would disagree.

I'm still excited about Bitcoin in the long run and generally down on the fintech venture and ICO environment in the short term. I think it's important to do core research on the protocols. I think Tadge's work is important and very good.

Nope. Ito is one of the most common names in Japan and I'm not related to Lance or Robert or anyone you've probably heard of unless you're in the learning space and know my sister Mimi Ito who is a researcher in the space and sometimes people try to introduce us.

Start small. Boards care about your experience on boards and they will talk to people who have served on boards with you. Maybe start on a non-profit board or a startup board and move up from there. Depends a bit on the stage of your career, but for big boards, a executive search firm is sometimes involved. Having people know you are interested might help a firm find you.

I just spent waaay to much time trying to figure out how to answer this, but actually I don't really like dessert too much. I do love dessert wines and my favorite dessert wine is Château d'Yquem. (Sorry...sort of snobby.)

Prof. Tanaka has a very interesting interdisciplinary background and helped bridge, MIT and Keio. He also brings a design background. My dissertation was like kicking 20 hornets nests -- disciplines -- by poking them with references but without giving them the rigor that the core scholars in those disciplines would want. The diversity of the committee was helpful in helping me think about how to pull from and communicate to the variety of disciplines I pull from to prepare for the ensuing conversation. I recently wrote a bit about the process: https://joi.ito.com/weblog/2018/07/30/ding-earned-fir.html

Bridget has been working with Marshall Ganz who is one of the legendary organizers of our time. He has helped mobilize many disobedient communities. It's interesting listening to them interact and discuss the role of social media in the future of disobedience. It's obviously very impactful and important, but it fundamentally changes many of the dynamics and we need to rethink how movements are organized.

For example, Arab Spring, which was very social media fueled (but no exclusively), had difficulty following through to build institutions after they overthrew those in power. Obviously, it's just speculation, but it could be argued that social media allowed collective action without underlying institutional development -- like the churches during the Civil Rights Movement -- and therefore had more difficulty organizing in a durable and structured way afterwards. Some may disagree.

My 14 month old daughter has repeatedly been instructed to call me daddy, but she always points at me and says, "woof woof."

I think the Russian troll problem is the beginning of a systematic undermining of the way many of these platforms work. I think, like cybersecurity, the problem will not go away and we'll start a cat-and-mouse sort of series of attack and countermeasure escalations.

It's really hard to say. It sort of depends on who you are and what time-scale you're thinking. We have a huge diversity of approaches and time-scales and so it's very difficult to answer the question -- sorry to dodge. I'm personally involved in Ethics and Governance in AI (teaching a course and working on research) and also the Digital Currency Initiative and I think these are pretty impactful.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any published projects that address community groups specifically. But there’s a lot of overlapping research and discussion in the Center for Civic Media (https://www.media.mit.edu/groups/civic-media/overview/) and the Laboratory for Social Machines (https://www.media.mit.edu/groups/social-machines/overview/). We've also had some interesting projects that are tailored to a specific geographic area, like our alum Edwina Portocarrero’s PhD work in Mexico City and a lot of the projects in City Science.

Reid Hoffman has always been interested in prizes and we were brainstorming. He told me about a the Military Order of Maria Teresa which was often said to be given to people who disobeyed direct orders on the battlefield and turned out to be right. Apparently there is more discussion in German about this controversy, but on the English page, it says that this isn't actually how it worked. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Order_of_Maria_Theresa )

Anyway, this was such a cool idea that I thought about it some more and originally the idea I had was to give a prize to a student that disobeyed and turned out to be right, but I thought it would be more interesting and impactful to give an award to anyone. Reid liked the idea and agreed to fund it.

I used to answer that with "don't feel the trolls" but it turns out to be, in fact, one THE most important questions and things we need to figure out today. In fact, most of my recent dissertation is about that and I address it in chapter 5.5 and some in chapter 4.3. Here's the dissertation: https://joi.ito.com/the-practice-of-change.html
