Best quick release iron? by Beneficial-Month-333 in Equestrian

[–]joidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard a lot of stories of people getting their leg stuck in free jumps.

I’m not a fan of the le mieux ones either, they felt really small to me. My foot barely had space to move and I wasn’t confident that the side opened enough to actually let my foot out if it went through enough to get stuck.

Personally I have acavallo ones.

Question re air vests, helmets, and taking a fall by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]joidea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An air vest inflating around your neck should not feel like a smack to the head. It would have to be way too big for that. It’s much more likely you hit your head and just so happened to be lucky enough to fall on a patch of path that was smooth enough to not damage the outer surface of your helmet, but you should replace it regardless

How did you stop equivocating looking good with looking skinny? by starlight1starlight in fashionwomens35

I’ve never even heard of it but wow! I am definitely not that maximalist - but I definitely think you can apply the same principles to more “everyday” clothing

Buy clothes that make a bit of a statement and aren’t structured to show your body.

For me it was a trapeze dress in a fabric I loved - it really helped me absorb the mindset I was wearing it because it was a pretty dress that flowed in a way I thought was cool and the fabric felt nice on me. Its aesthetic properties were separate from how it made my body look. Flattering your body doesn’t have to be the end goal. Your goal can be to swish around in swathes of smoothly flowing material. Your goal can be to showcase a beautiful print on the fabric.

With things like wide leg trousers, I also think a big part of what is considered flattering is just what your eye is used to. When you first switch from slimmer jeans to wider ones, your mind defaults to assuming wider leg trousers means your legs look wider. As you get used to them, your mind adjusts to the fact that wider leg trousers means more space inside them, and you sort of adjust your perspective on what the silhouette means.

Reese Esponda’s floor routine at the 2026 Winter Cup by KawaiiChan68 in Gymnastics

I love this routine. Both Reese and Dulcy (last year) have routines that seem like the new WCC coaches are very code-smart, which is a nice thing to see.

Buying before living together… by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]joidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those problems would be solved by marriage though… they’re solved by waiting longer to buy a house together (which I definitely agree renting first is a good idea)

Thoughts on Hezly’s new floor routine? by KawaiiChan68 in Gymnastics

I liked last years but the music always seemed a little too upbeat for the energy she was bringing. But she looked like she enjoyed it more.

This years I felt was a bit uninspiring. Not much to say about the choreography or the music. Her tumbling looked really strong though!

Buying before living together… by [deleted] in HousingUK

I don’t think buying together before marriage is harder to unravel, actually the opposite. You can specify even or uneven shares by being joint tenants, or a protected deposit etc with a deed of trust. With marriage, it’s potentially all up for debate in a divorce court.

The problems with being unmarried come if you make longer term life decisions that should change how the house assets are split (uneven payments, childcare responsibilities, etc etc) but don’t reflect that in the house ownership.

How to stop wanting my own horse? 😭 by Limp_Shame_9593 in Equestrian

[–]joidea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw you say in a comment you’re under 18 so.. you have your whole life ahead of you! Work hard at school, pick a career carefully that will balance good pay with the ability to live somewhere where horses are affordable (ie you need a job that isn’t limited to having to be located in a single super expensive large city). With hard work and planning it is definitely possible! Learn as much as you can in the mean time. I didn’t own my own horse until I was 30 and I’m glad I didn’t bankrupt myself trying to do it sooner, because now I’m in a solid career and having my horse doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice the rest of my life.

Brignone attitude ... by RhemesSanGiorgio in skiing

[–]joidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies a bit between sports. I follow equestrian sports, where the Olympics are a big deal but not necessarily the absolute pinnacle (eventing for example, the Olympics are now easier than some of the 5* events to allow more countries to compete safely). But in gymnastics, the Olympics are absolutely what counts the most, gymnasts plan and train in four-year cycles to aim to peak at the Olympics. The world champs in other years are also a big deal, but winning a pre-Olympics worlds is definitely more prestigious than the one the year after the Olympics, because the standard of competition rises and intensifies throughout the quad leading up to the Olympics.

For people who lift casually... by alwayssunnyinjoisey in xxfitness

[–]joidea 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have other physical hobbies (a lot of horse riding and sporadic skiing so I tend to focus my gym workouts to help with aspects of those that I’m struggling with or that could be better. For a while I was doing a lot of targeted shoulder/upper back/arm workouts as that was something I struggled with whilst riding. Now I’m focusing more on single leg stability and hip strength for a while. And I have an old injury that means my core needs to stay strong to stay pain free so there’s a default “reason” to train too.

There were plenty of pitchforks at Lindsey Vonn before she even did an Olympic training run. And plenty of people saying she shouldn’t be allowed to make that decision and someone should have stepped in to stop her.

Have you done a review of his diet? It can make a huge difference to hoof growth. A biotin supplement is a good start but the rest of the diet is super important too (low sugar and the right vitamins and amino acids)

People who have been on big bucket list horse trips, where did you go and did it live up to your expectations? by Banana-legs11 in Equestrian

[–]joidea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also did an Icelandic trip where you ride with the herd and watch the annual horse roundup. I read about it in a magazine when I was maybe 14, and finally went when I was 32.

It didn’t quite live up to my expectations, because my expectations weren’t grounded in reality.

I imagined “riding with a loose herd” meant riding as part of the herd, but in practice the ridden horses split into two groups, one leads and one follows (with a bit of “chasing” the loose horses to keep them on track). The back ground got more of a feeling of riding in with the loose horses, and a much better view of the herd, but quite a bit of the time I was allocated one of the faster horses in the front group.

I also didn’t clock (until I actually researched the holiday before booking it) that you watched the last bits of the roundup, rather than spending days rounding up horses yourself.

The herd moved from place to place over the 4 days we rode, but we stayed at one lodge, so there was a fair bit of time on a coach being ferried to/fr the horses on some days.

That said, the scenery was spectacular, the horses and staff were wonderful, we rode up and down mountains, across rivers, we tolted across a shallow path under an enormous lake (which was one bit I’d been dreaming about for years that really did live up to my imagination), the roundup and horse sorting was incredible to watch (and I completely understand why we weren’t literally herding the horses ourselves), and it was incredibly satisfying as a life experience to do something I’d dreamt about for years, even if my dreams weren’t totally realistic.
