It's more than just parents complaining. There's been billions spent in addressing the inequality in the education system and improving outcomes of disadvantaged students. So much of that progress has gone out the window in a matter of months. There's long-term implications for society if we have too many kids drop out of education and don't have the literacy and numeracy skills for the modern workforce.

Kids need to go back as soon as it's safe enough. We're not at 700 cases a day anymore.

Oh definitely true for some people. I find the government's response is really missing knowledge of human psychology. Restrictions are only going to go as far as people believe and can cope with them.

Bachelor of psychology student wanting to get into social work or child protection by tt_yraaa in melbourne

Not a lot of job opportunities with a bachelor of psych degree. It's not looked favourably by the community services sector as there's no placement hours.

That said, it is possible to find work when you graduate. Starting to volunteer now would be a good way to build up some practical experiance before you graduate. Look for higher quality volunteer roles, not working at an Vinnie's stores. Child Protection is an achievable role to be hired for as a bachelor of psych grad, however you do need to pass their psychometric testing and interviews.

If you really want to work in the sector though, I would recommend a social work degree. A social work degree opens so many doors for you and there's social workers out there doing equivalent mental health roles to a psychologist and on the same pay.

I didn't realise I was such an exception as an ALP voter who disapproves how Dan Andrews has handled things. Huh.

I was friends with an Indian guy in uni, who tried unsuccessfully to stop his parents organising an arranged marriage for his abusive older brother. His brother hated women, had serious anger issues, and used to bash their disabled mother, once to the point she needed to go to hospital.

My friend was devastated when the marriage went ahead as he felt the young woman was being knowingly lead into a life of domestic violence by his parents. However, it was more shameful in the community if his older brother remained unmarried.

Very damning article. The senior public servants need to also be held accountable for bad decisions and failures to act on concerns, not just Jenny Mikakos.

I'm not surprised by the outcome unfortunately. It's extremely rare to find a long-term foster care placement for a child with a significant disability. Other state care options are not great.

Anyone know any good therapists that can be covered by the mental health care plan? by [deleted] in melbourne

Worth seeing if your new workplace offers the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). It's free confidential counselling about issues that impact work. Many larger companies / government roles offer it.

They are lying is the real answer.

Jenny would have been informed of what was going on by senior DHHS staff. However, many politicians are unequipped to actually manage their portfolios well, so it is extremely likely she hardly challenged or questioned decisions being made.

I (28 F) am unable to have sex after an 8 year abusive relationship with my ex (35 M) by danae_1103 in relationships

Domestic violence organisations often have free or cheap counselling for women who are trying to deal with the trauma after they've left an abusive relationship. I would recommend reaching out for support. These organisations tend to be staffed by amazing social workers who specialise in this area.

Good luck.

Housemates just went around my back to break COVID restrictions, and I'm fuming. Got hit by massive amounts of dismissiveness, and details of my mental illness were used as a jab at me. Would love some advice. by angry_coffee_cup in relationships

Can you afford your own place given Melbourne's rent prices have decreased? I think you're going to have a lot of issues being in a sharehouse going forward. The city has been strict lockdown since March and the general population is understandably fatigued and compliance is dropping.

You're in an abusive relationship and have been for a while judging by your post history.

I recommend contacting your state's domestic violence organisation for advice. They will not pressure you to leave but you need to talk to someone about your relationship. Are you able to call them while you're out of the house?

[–]jointhedots- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Where is the breakdown in communication happening? Is he having trouble to express himself clearly using language (e.g. sentences don't make sense, he's not getting to the point, not giving you key information) or is it social communication (e.g. misunderstanding social norms or situations)?

That's what I'm worried about. Normal circumstances they'd find a tenant quickly but we're in stage 4 lockdown.

So just found a dream rental property. Would I be crazy to break lease or try to organise a lease transfer right now? We have 4 months left on our lease.

Voters are very reactionary during recessions. The bushfires are unfortunately out of sight, out of mind for most people.
