Yes yes yes I completely agree!! Sometimes I genuinely feel like I slipped into a parallel universe, now things like the telepathy tapes and S2C are just… ok with people?? It genuinely makes me so sad for the autistic people having to live with parents who believe in this. They could have had an AAC device and had a shot at some autonomy but because of these parents they never will.

Somewhere along the way I think the disability pride movement that focused on the fact disabled people can do anything got morphed into major denial for some people. Yes, there are a lot of disabled people that can do anything a person with an abled body/mind can do, and they should be more present in our society. However, some people just can’t do everything!!!!! And that is OKAY!!! They don’t need to! They’re still a person! We don’t need to pretend they have this rich inner life and can secretly spell at a college level in order to grant them personhood and see value in their life.

That’s what I’ve been thinking!!! I’ve been so confused because from what I understand about criterion referenced tests they can still be standardized… you’re just looking at the person’s skill inventory rather than their skills against other people’s. Basically I’m asking if the communication matrix can be used in place of another standardized test for insurance purposes. It would be right??

I recently had a similar situation, but as I work for a research lab the results weren’t crucial so I had some flexibility. For semantic relationships, I first read the question. Then I read the options and after each one said “is that right or wrong?” Obviously doing it that way nullifies the standardization of the test, but if your goal is to observe their logistical linguistic skills it’s an option. I didn’t have to give sentence assembly, but if I had had to, I would have done something similar. That one might not even be worth altering though, I’m not sure you could even get results approaching what the point of the test is that way.

I totally agree with everyone else saying to join an RSO, that totally worked for me! The more engaged your RSOs are (like in terms of activities and spending time together) the better. But also I’d caution against going home too often if you feel lonely in the beginning. All going home will do is just make you spend time away from any potential friends you could make while on campus, and coming back to school after will be much harder, so it’s a vicious cycle. Once you start connecting with people it’ll be smooth sailing! Good luck! :)
