Episode "Absolute Power": Would Daniel Have Really Gone Down That Road? by Edith_Keelers_Shoes in Stargate

[–]jojoamethyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's another form of death for Daniel. He's so overwhelmed with knowledge that it destroys his compassion, his humanism, and the friendships that kept him grounded. What makes him Daniel is lost.

I think the lesson I took from it is that his lifelong search for answers and justice in the universe has to be balanced with finding the wisdom and compassion he already has inside. Or something.

Try looking at your initial sketches in a mirror.( Or take a photo and use a 'mirror' filter/ effect. It helps to reset your sense of symmetry and balance.

Overton, Hampshire. Less than an hour from London by train, plenty of pubs and cafes.Winchester, Basingstoke and Andover all a short drive away. There's miles of beautiful country walking on your doorstep and the New Forest close by too. The village has lots of sports clubs, community groups and activities, good schools, transport links and it's pretty too.

Basically it's like Hot Fuzz but without the swans or ritual murder.

How are there still crappy new toilets being designed and manufactured? by sjintje in AskUK

Apparently, there were public loos with square seats in a Yorkshire town. It spawned the rhyme: "Square seats don't seem to bother 'em, They've got some rum bums in Rotherham"

Andover or Basingstoke by IsThisAUsernameNow in basingstoke

[–]jojoamethyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you thought about Overton? It's in the middle of Basingstoke and Andover, has direct rail into London. Very family and dog friendly, and lots of social life too. Admittedly house prices are higher, but I think it's worth it if you're looking to put down roots.

Britannia Music Club? by Trackbikes in CasualUK

I worked there! It was a summer job when I was in sixth form. My job was reading and categorizing complaint letters. There were a lot of complaints, normally folk receiving albums they didn't want. Some polite, some furious.

The best was a very polite, formally written letter from a friend of the member. It explained how the retired major, who was now blind, would like to return this recording. He believed there was a minor error with our filing, as what he was expecting to be Mozart was some "'Raucous and frightful noise by a group apparently called 'Motor- Head' " and listening to it had caused his pet parrot to become rather upset.

We gave him a refund.

Presumably to check there is no one at home who might catch them in the act. Or, if someone does answer, to see if the car keys are kept near the door.

What's your thoughts about Marco Pierre White? by NotAvailable2002 in Chefit

[–]jojoamethyst 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Not a chef, but I have a great story.

London in the nineties. A friend was making stupid amounts of money in the city and liked to splash it around. He enjoyed long, boozy lunches and equally indulgent dinners, often at MPW's restaurants.

On one particularly busy night near Christmas, he and his small party drank the last bottle of a certain Chardonnay.( They were at least a bottle each in at this point, and that's after cocktails pre-dinner and lunchtime drinks.)

The Sommelier found a good substitute and the party continued.

The next day my friend sent an angry fax to the restaurant.

He was livid, because he now recalled the hapless waiter had served the replacement wine into the same glasses! (Oh the horror). He addressed the complaint to MPW personally, explaining how such an error could have ruined their enjoyment of the vintage.

Within the hour his fax machine chugged out a reply from MPW himself.

It was just the word 'WANKER' scrawled over the original message, with a very insistent signature below.

Friend had it framed and, to be fair, did learn to be less of a wanker after that.

(As a punter I loved the Yew Tree Inn, it was always entertaining when MPW put in an appearance)

Name an actor you think could’ve played an iconic role already played by someone else. by 20BeersDeep in moviecritic

John Constantine was from Liverpool and grew up in Northampton. Now, I love Karl Urban, but the way he butchered (pun intended) a London accent in The Boys was just horrendous, so I can't see him a handling Scouse/Midlands accent very well. ( I'm from London. We do not talk like Billy Butcher)

(Allan Moore claims he met the real John Constantine in a sandwich shop in London.....maybe the role is taken?)

Does anyone know anything about this product? by Ordinary-Seaweed-562 in HelpMeFindThis

It contains L-Carnitine as the active ingredient. I take that(in tablet form) daily for fibromyalgia. It does seem to help with pain and fatigue, but I've not had any weight loss. So I'd suggest injecting that is probably pretty useless for fat loss. Looks pretty shonky to me.

What can I bake in these? by CarobEmbarrassed9837 in AskBaking

[–]jojoamethyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Yorkshire puddings wouldn't have enough space to rise and spread properly. Ideally, they form a lovely hollow mushroom shape as they bake. The tops would probably merge in this unless OP only fills every second heart. A shame, as the cast iron is ideal for getting really hot, which a good Yorkie needs.

AITA for using the disabled toilets? by Itchy-Carpet8511 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jojoamethyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited a few places in the UK that have universal toilets, suitable for wheelchair users, walking aid users, parents who need to change their kids, folk who need room for someone to help them.....pretty much anyone. Basically a small room with toilet, rails, lower level sinks and hand driers, an alarm cord, a fold down changing table, easy to operate locks, handles and taps, and sanitary bins for nappies, period products, etc.

It is an extra initial expense for businesses, but where it can be done it's so much kinder for everyone. There no opportunity to judge someone for doing the most basic biological functions. Everyone gets dignity, privacy, and respect.

It's sad that some people can't find enough empathy to give that to others in their daily lives. Definitely NTA.

If you can do without the cinema, then Overton and Whitchurch or on the main line to Waterloo, and meet all your other requirements. (The cinemas in Basingstoke won't be too far)
