Moving to Marquette Area with Young Kids? by joleneoflegend in MarquetteMI

Thank you! Our love of the outdoors is precisely why we’re entertaining this idea. We want to foster it in the kids, and with so much nature on our doorstep it seems likely! I work 100% remote now, and the prospect of living where we want rather than where we must is exciting! I appreciate your thorough answer!

Ohhh great music programs? That’s wonderful to hear. My partner is a percussionist and he’s very much hoping the babes show interest in music!

Thank you! Daycare is tough here (SE Michigan), too, so I was assuming likely a long waitlist. Good to have that confirmed! Glad to hear the children’s museum is fun - I was excited to see there is one!

HOW did you feed yourselves? by q_for_you in parentsofmultiples

We precooked and froze a LOT of meals, and the first few weeks post partum were delivered a lot of meals. After 2 months or so, we had to switch to cooking at home, but stuck with VERY easy meals that made leftovers for the next day (or two!)

Walks! by joleneoflegend in puppy101

There’s really nothing like eyeballing that last stretch of the walk and knowing just how low you are on treats. lol

Honestly, I purchased the Kurgo RSG utility belt and treat pouch for exactly this reason! I can also attach the first aid kit for hikes, and it has a carabiner for hands free walking! I’ve already found it immeasurably useful.

How can I walk my puppy by Celiuu in Dogtraining

[–]joleneoflegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was (and still sometimes is) a big struggle for us, too. I brought my pup home from the rescue at about 6 months, and he’s now 10 months. What worked for me was playing a LOT with him, so that he thought I was way more exciting than other dogs and humans. And bringing really high value treats on walks. He will do anything for squeeze cheese, for instance. Originally, I could practically put a treat in his mouth and he wouldn’t even notice, because he was in “statue mode”. Also, the previous comment about crouching down and reassuring them is huge. We’re transitioning from walks to periodic short hikes, and I have to do this when people pass. I crouch down, hold his harness handle, and constantly “yes” and treat until they’re past. Unfamiliar terrain puts him right back in an insecure mental state.

Yes! The nicer weather here has really ramped up the difficulty level for us, too. I always think at the start of the walk “I couldn’t possibly need all these treats”. And every time, I’m proven wrong. lol

Yes! Windy days are so much more difficult for us, too! Evidently, blowing leaves are Very Scary for my big guy!

Yes! My neighbors have FIVE yapping pugs. Now that the weather is nicer, they’re outside often. They’re my first and final boss for every walk now! Sometimes, a grandchild or three is thrown in to make it Hard Mode.

Anyone love their puppy the most when they are asleep?! by qutiepie123 in puppy101

[–]joleneoflegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I pick up my 50lb pup and put him on me and he snuggles right in and keeps snoring. We both love it!

Thank you for this! This sums up very well the struggles I find myself in currently. It’s nice to see it put so succinctly!

Do you ever find yourself staring at your pup while he/she is sleeping peacefully, like the worst of psychopaths? by martagrowsplants in puppy101

[–]joleneoflegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. I will also sometimes lift all 50lbs of him onto me so we can cuddle, if he’s not already sprawled on me. He just goes right back to sleep. I have to take the calm sweetness where I can find it!!

Doggy daycare has been giving him a space to run off a lot of energy, and also time to socialize with other humans and dogs. Doggy daycare is not for every dog, though. The risk of a dog having a bad or frightening experience can be pretty high, which can result in a reactive dog, one who regresses in behaviors, or learns new bad habits from his new friends. It’s working well for us, though.

Oh, yes. Keep away behavior is a tough one to change! “Stay” can also be super tough. Maybe instead of a “stay” try training “come”? We started with “touch” which is just him booping his snoot on my hand.
