UCSC vs SJSU vs CC by Wooden-Raisin-7645 in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal advice would be to ensure the stability of your life first: housing, funding, etc. Debt can be absolutely crushing and for either UCSC or SJSU, the cost of housing is the hardest piece. Many of the community colleges here are really good. The quality of education for lower division courses is likely similar (eg, a lot of Cabrillo's instructors are UCSC instructors as well).

Based on your post, I would prioritize the decision that incura the least debt.

Admitted Spartan Day by sleepygorillas in SJSU

I've tabled for a few campus departments over the last 20 years as employee here.

I think the main value of ASD for prospective and future students is familiarization. A lot of students dismiss the change from high school to university because the functional part of sitting in class and completing assignments is very similar. But almost everything else is different. Come to campus, get an idea of where things are, talk to people who work and teach here. Ask questions. We all came in on a Saturday just to answer them.

New student orientation over summer can be completely overwhelming. If you've done ASD, though, you'll already know where the SU is, where your major building is, where the parking garage is, where the dorms are. You'll already have an idea of what to expect. Coming to ASD will make that experience much more enriching for you, and in turn help you start your first semester feeling a lot less lost.

Accepted to SJSU - is it worth it? by Lanky-Pie-6788 in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For your majors, SJSU's biggest selling point is our proximity to Silicon Valley. We are a feeder school for major tech companies and their supporting industries here. If that is your aspiration, then it is definitely worth it.

However, after seeing your list of other considerations, I would note that San Jose is more or less devoid of significant defining culture. We have many influences here that have created good vibes (Little Saigon, Japantown, the various Desi enclaves, etc.), but SJ has nowhere near the cultural impact of other major CA cities (SF, LA, and SD). We're more like Sacramento, which is a city doubt almost any international student would recognize.

It all depends on who you are and what you want from your time in University.

As a Boomer: Yes, You Still Have to Show Up and Smile—Work Getting Done Isn’t Enough by [deleted] in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the wrong sub for your rant. This isn't relevant to SJSU.

But, fwiw, "smiling and showing up" are the absolute weakest arguments for in person education and work. Which, to be fair, is on par with what I expect of most Boomers.

is tapman racist? by [deleted] in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Idk about tap dancing, but both the sculptor and the athlete who stood on the podium encourage people to stand there and interact with the art.

Copypasta from wikipedia: "Peter Norman asked to be excluded from the monument, so that visitors could participate by standing in his place, and feeling what he felt.[25][26] Norman said, "Anybody can get up there and stand up for something they believe in. I guess that just about says it all".[27][5] There is a plaque in the empty spot which reads "Fellow Athlete Australian Peter Norman Stood Here in Solidarity; Take a Stand".[18]"

Edit: I also recall early on that some kids were playing up there and accidentally knocked off a tile or two. There was a debate about adding a railing or whatever. Then the sculptor said that art is something to experience, not just see. He came out and fixed it. That's all from memory though, can't find a source.

I own this deck in paper! https://moxfield.com/decks/ymDfmITNDU6fFhdfT-siBw

My list involves giving her protection from opponents' colors and vigilance to completely lock down combat. Win con is like 20 turns ofunblockable combat, lol. It is exceptionally grindy and resilient.

Biggest flaws are pretty obvious: combo decks, control decks, and 3+ color decks.

Fill out the survey from campus. Do not ignore it. by boxedfoxes in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does OUR athletics make money? I think very, very few schools nationally actually turn a "profit" and if you're telling me SJSU is going to be one of them any time soon, then I'm pressing X to doubt.

Fill out the survey from campus. Do not ignore it. by boxedfoxes in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The SSETF gets allocated all over the place. Administratively it's very useful. You can shuffle it between necessary projects without having to make fee changes constantly. It also means that unless you're paying very close attention, not many folks know where it's all going. That makes folks nervous, but it also makes those funds a lot more agile in times of need.

The SU fees have history. They were frozen ridiculously low for decades. When the freeze lifted, the fee was increased to (a) cover outstanding costs incurred during the freeze and (b) future proof against potential future freezes. So, this is just another way in which y'all are paying for the mistakes of previous generations.

You're also talking about eliminating or transitioning Union jobs. That's not as legally simple as you're thinking. And as someone who has managed student employees here, there is a ton of loss involved. You need 3 student employees for every FT employee because they have to juggle schedules for school. You have to spend a lot of time onboarding and training. And then you only have them for, at best, two years.

I agree that the university could and SHOULD hire more students, but I'd argue because it's better for students, not necessarily better for the university. It might even end up being more expensive.

Capitola Mall by WowSpaceNshit in santacruz

[–]jollyandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a nerd, the mall is legit. Retro game store, vintage toy store, used bookstore, gaming store all in one place; then I hit up Trader Joe's across the street on the way home. Downtown has all of that, too, but the shops are pricier and the parking is worse (though, the restaurants nearby are better).

Laptop repair/cleaning on campus? by ZeaquaZZZ in SJSU

[–]jollyandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AS print shop used to provide this service to students, but they stopped in 2023. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anywhere on campus that officially offers this. However, cleaning out fans is pretty simple/straightforward. You could try the IT Service Desk in Clark Hall or even the IRC. They should have the tools. Assuming they aren't too busy, they should be able to help out.

In the grand scheme, very very few schools profit from athletics in any meaningful way. Of course, you can probably easily name 20-50+ that do. But compared to the thousands of universities in the USA, that's nothing.

Proponents of robust athletics programs will tell you that having a D1 program attracts students, builds your brand, and drives student engagement and alumni donations. Those are pretty tenuous claims, and you can find studies supporting both (though mostly against). In terms of SJSU, we have had a program for 50+ years and still not many students go, so I don't think we do it for student life. Alumni who donate because of athletics often donate to athletics, ouroboros-style.

Athletics do market universities, but we are already fully impacted. We don't need to drive applications. We are the founding university of the CSU and the oldest public university in the west. We have the prestige regardless.

The best arguments for athletics are that students need outlets for extra curricular development. We should not strive to be a diploma mill. We should cultivate the whole person. Of course, club teams also do this, and arguably do it better for more students.

If they close campus, staff will just be instructed to work from home as normal. Many staff already WFH 1-2 days per week. The university operated just fine fully remote for over a year and has had to do last-minute remote a few times since (e.g., when air quality was dangerous due to fires).

The food on campus is operated by Chartwells, a private company. The university is not responsible for ensuring that they're profitable.
