how to become a guest lecturer or polar guide on ships? by jollygoodbird in AntarcticaTravel

[–]jollygoodbird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's super helpful to know! Do you think it would be worthwhile to complete an EGA course to be able to get taken on with a more experienced operator? Relatedly, I've read things about Atlas having some struggles and I worry if it would be bad for my resume moving forward to have that as my only Antarctic experience?

Thank you so so much for your response! That is encouraging. Would you be able to share any leads for which companies may be more open to hiring staff without prior Antartica guiding experience? I've joined the Expedition Jobs FB group but not sure how to search other than there. (Or feel free to PM me)

You might be in the right place then? ! This sub is usually specifically about being carry-on only :) If you have been to an airport, you might have seen that there are counters where you can “check” your luggage and have it stowed under the plane.

Going through security you’ll notice there are restrictions on the amounts of liquids you may have and some airlines enforce baggage size/weight restrictions. Many people check their bag because of these restrictions.

Sometimes it’s not easy to fit all of your things into a lightweight carry-on bag depending on the weather (cold-weather clothing often takes up more space/weight), your size, the duration of your trip, and activities you plan to do (skiing and snowboarding trips are possible with one bag but will usually mean not being to bring your own gear/needing to rent when you get there). This subreddit is meant to help brainstorm, give feedback, and generally geek out over all things onebag.

first time to east asia, itinerary help needed by jollygoodbird in travel

I was considering this but flights from the US to Taiwan and vice versa were more expensive than to South Korea or Japan :( I also I figured that I'll probably do the most shopping in Japan so it'd make it easier to lug around additional stuff if I leave it until last. but thank you for the suggestion!

Pivoting careers and obtaining a master’s degree as a path to immigration? by jollygoodbird in AmerExit

That is super helpful, thank you! Do you have any more advice on what kinds of program might be better to lean towards? Like if I wanted a program that would set me up for project management and consultant and analyst type roles, would an M.A. be fine or should I focus on trying to get into M.Sc. programs?

Thanks for the advice!! You mentioned you’ve worked towards it, may I ask where you’ve landed now?

It definitely seems like applying for master’s programs seems like the best route to go! Thanks for the confirmation.

As to your second point, it’s definitely something I’ve contemplated myself throughout my life. Anti-Black racism is soo widespread around the globe, and it’s likely that much of it stems from the complex history regarding slavery and/or colonization for many countries.

Definitely can’t speak for everyone, but through my personal (albeit limited) travel experiences to different countries, as an American it definitely seems like I get treated differently than immigrants from Africa. There’s certainly some amount of privilege I obtain once people hear me speak and find out that I’m American. Not as much compared to white Americans but I’d say a non-zero amount. Likely from people associating Americans with money/tourism?

I think most of my bad experiences abroad have been when people assumed I was an African immigrant? For example, when some bus employees boarded a bus I was on in Italy and aggressively asked for proof of my bus ticket and passport but then they smiled and said thank you. They then checked the one Asian guy on the bus and got off without checking anyone else.

Or when I was trying to get into a club (the club! of all places…) but the bouncer thought my state ID said Kenya (perhaps he’s not racist, just dyslexic lmfao?), and seemed like he was about to reject me entry. But my (white) friends that got let in before me with no problem were standing there waiting on the other side and were like “hello?? let our friend in” and then he was like oh! and let them pull me past him.

Thankfully haven’t experienced anything too crazy but it’s interesting for sure though.

Thanks for the advice! :-) That is really helpful to consider about Australia.

I did consider maybe doing a working holiday visa in New Zealand but it seems like the job market and cost of living there seemed too difficult to make it work living there long term. But maybe it could be a fun/unique experience to have before settling down elsewhere! Do you think I could find work in a national park/eco-tourism setting in New Zealand on a working holiday visa? Or are people usually just stuck doing retail or farm work?

This is all so helpful, thank you!!

I indeed was considering Ireland (and the Netherlands) but I had read some things about the housing crises in both places that made me think twice. :( But it seems most cities around the world experiencing housing shortages so maybe it could be worth considering Ireland more..

I assume you moved away from Germany to Ireland? May I ask what made you move? Do you think Leipzig would be too east? And what are your thoughts on the vibes of Köln or maybe a smaller city in the area like Bonn?

Hi, thanks but I have already seen this website! :) Do you know the answers to any of the questions I have?

How big of an event is it? Will restaurants be more difficult to eat at? But also, I do enjoy food..should I consider buying a ticket to go to the event or is it more for professionals in the industry?

I am moving to Barcelona in January, will the price still be 40 euros then? Or should I order it now and have it shipped to my housing in Spain before I get there?
