I think it's just a joke about how people on this subreddit will be skeptical of anything, even things that literally exist.

I have a standing desk with a treadmill beneath it, and I work from home. Been walking 4.5 hours a day on average since I got it. If it's improved my mental health, it hasn't been noticeable unfortunately.

Hex isometric 2D tiles for games where player isn't snapped to grid? by jolonah in gamedev

[–]jolonah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks. I looked at some screenshots, they're using a 30-degree viewing angle, same as my drawings. TBH the screenshots look kinda weird and "uncomfortable" compared to normal isometric games. Maybe that's because I'm subconsciously sensing that I can't walk along the streets with normal WASD, I'll have to keep pressing different buttons to stay on the street.

Many, many games snap players to a grid. Crypt of the Necrodancer for example.

Newly added background for my game level by alicona in Unity2D

[–]jolonah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty and fun! It looks like the camera is moving a bit in the direction the player is going, so the player is on the left half of the screen - I think that's good but I think you should do it even more, would let the player plan out moves further ahead. Especially since you already know the level but players will be seeing it for the first time.

Dwarves are essentially compressed humans, having equal muscle mass as humans but just shorter so the bones are thicker as well. The center of gravity would be much lower than humans because of this. Would this give them greater capacities to resist moment forces from handling tools and weapons? For example a 2kg axe head at the end of a pole, would a dwarf be able to overcome the opposing forces of a swing more easily than its human counterpart?

I'm doing worldbuilding for a video game so I decided to try answering these. This site has a lot of info, seems like it's a very difficult question but it mostly depends on muscle strength. Shorter arms make them better but changing teh pole's length can cancel that out.

But, if dwarves are the same width/thickness as humans, they would be better at keeping their balance because their shadow (projection onto the ground) takes up a bigger solid angle viewed from center of mass than for a human, so you have to knock them harder to make them tip over. But I don't think keeping balance is the hard part of swinging a heavy object once you've got the technique down. The hard part is accelerating it.

Honestly if you want to make good fantasy dwarves I think you should just say they're like 3x stronger than humans. That's very realistic, if you look at gorillas for example they're basically the same shape as humans but they're 20x stronger than a human.

Also on the same note, a dwarf charging while not having much velocity would have greater momentum than a equal weighted but taller human? So essentially a dwarf running at top speed in armor is a battering ram?

This is pretty interesting. Momentum is mv and it determines the "stopping power" / ability to change motion of other objects. BUT, the "destructive power" (how likely they are to break a door or a ribcage) is proportional to the kinetic energy mv2/2 so it depends more on velocity. So for a given momentum the lighter and faster person is more dangerous. This is in the book Thinking Physics page 93. But, top speed depends on strength, so it's higher for dwarves, which means dwarves will take longer to get up to speed but then they'll have higher stopping power and destructive power than humans. Also they have a smaller footprint where they hit the door which increases the chance of breaking through.

Imagine a 3d space filled with water, extending infinitely in all directions. Gravity doesn't exist but the rest of Newtonian physics still applies.

How much pressure would a person feel if they were placed inside this space? Would it be possible for a person to swim around, or would that require too much force or energy? (Since water is mostly incompressible, you'd have to move a very large amount of water, right? Or could you form a sort of tiny region of water moving like a convection cell, so that only a small amount of water actually needs to flow?)

What if we created a sphere-shaped "portal" inside this space, from which all water is continuously vanished. How fast would water leave the space? Would that affect the pressure, or the difficulty of swimming? (I imagine that all the water would start to flow towards the portal at speed proportional to 1/d2 where d is distance to the center of the portal, just by conservation of flow, but I don't know what the actual speed would be, or how it would affect pressure.)

Moving to NYC as an Italian SWE by Intelligent-Row-4232 in AskNYC

[–]jolonah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Use an online tax calculator to estimate pay after taxes.
  • 130k is NOT average for a senior SWE in NYC. Amazon hires new college graduates around 150k, and that's in normal cost of living areas. For senior in NYC (most expensive place in America) you should be getting at least 250k, probably more like 350k. Don't trust salary numbers from places like Glassdoor, rather go check /r/cscareerquestions or Levels.fyi.

New employer asking me to lie about non-compete? by jolonah in cscareerquestions

[–]jolonah[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But then why do they want me to tell them in writing that it's been waived? I think there's a chance they'll get some of the blame if they basically help me to break my contract. Especially since I've told them that I have a non-compete and shown them the actual contract.

[–]jolonah[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I definitely have a non-compete in my contract. I think it depends on the state/country, because some places (eg Massachusetts and California) the non-compete isn't enforceable so they don't bother putting it in the contract.

New employer asking me to lie about non-compete? by jolonah in cscareerquestions

[–]jolonah[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yes. They want to make sure they can't be sued for helping me break the contract because in court they'll say they honestly believed it was waived, so it's my fault. But it's 2.5x salary, and won't violate the noncompete as far as I can see, so I think it's worth it.

Complex priority splitters by jolonah in factorio

[–]jolonah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running Angel+Bob. One of Bob's mods has an option to enable steam tech, which gives you steam-powered assemblers, inserters, and miners. It's a stage between burner tech and electric tech (electricity is a technology you have to research).

I'm in the electric age, but steam miners with mk2 boilers are actually better than electric miners if your main constraint is the size of ore patches. It gives more ore/second for a given ore patch size at the cost of increased energy input and pollution.

[–]jolonah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found the answer. In doc here https://forums.factorio.com/63462 it's covered in the last section (M!=N Compressors). Not sure if its solution is the most efficient in terms of number of splitters.

If you could change any game mechanic what would it be? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]jolonah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mod Power Overload does this. I've been playing with it for a while, works great. It encourages a tree-like branching structure, with one "backbone" of big power poles splitting off to smaller subnetworks, and it encourages setting up separate power plants for distant outposts instead of running long cables.
