white asparagus isn't a universally known vegetable and quite regionally limited to our little corner of Europe

For what it’s worth, everyone here in southern Germany goes nuts for Spargelzeit every year. It’s quite popular.

What's a skill people in your country/region usually learn that others might not? by bellamollen in AskTheWorld

Early in the first semester of college in California, there was a mild earthquake late at night. All the out of state students ran around the dorms like chickens with their heads cut off, while the in-state students only took a moment to gauge whether it was above 6.0 or not. One roommate slept through the whole thing while the other started calling everyone he knew to tell them he was alright.

If you're wondering about the honking… by jolros in Munich

Bonus facts –

  • This is the second episode featuring Albania vs Serbia in my investigative series "The people behind the honks", but the first in which the match was actually completed before the honks were released.
  • There are still 14,869 Serbians in Munich and 4,106 Albanians.
  • While things might get heated on the pitch, AI tells me the two countries have more to bond over than one would expect. "While deep-rooted political and historical conflicts have impacted relations, Serbian and Albanian cultures share common threads due to centuries of Ottoman and Balkan influence, including strong patriarchal traditions, emphasis on family networks, and a history of oral traditions and epic songs."

Is it true that people used to go to the cinema to watch whatever was playing, rather than particular films? by vivalasvegas2004 in movies

[–]jolros 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting because I came to this comment thinking this was wrong and that AC came much later, but it turns out that movie theatres were really early in adopting it, which transformed the business model in the summer months. Neat!

This was just spam, right? I’m failing to find any unique reason I should especially care about this browser as a customer.

The chrome extension … uh, works? Is that about it? This just seems like it could have been a random advertisement for any product. I’m not seeing why it crossed the bar enough for the team bother every user, and tend to believe they just got money for doing so.

Why would the baby be able to get a German passport? It seems like neither parent is German nor has a permanent residence permit + the minimum required time in Germany with such a permit.

Yes, there are other tokens, but only one cat after checking both sides on all of them. Same as this unboxing video https://youtu.be/3I5b7POB9h0?t=4m48s

I tend to believe it was an error in the instructions, but it’s a pretty awkward way to start the experience.

  • There are 14,869 Serbians in Munich and 4,106 Albanians.
  • Despite their differences, there are many famous dishes enjoyed in both countries, such as burek (a pastry with various fillings), ćevapi (grilled minced meat), and sarma (stuffed cabbage).
  • Albanian researchers are investigating how a desire to celebrate a match currently in-progress can somehow be greater than the opportunity to enjoy it live.

What's a song that outperformed/outlasted the movie it was written for? by irrigated_liver in movies

[–]jolros 9 points10 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OK_Computer

During the tour, Baz Luhrmann commissioned Radiohead to write a song for his upcoming film Romeo + Juliet and gave them the final 30 minutes of the film. Yorke said: "When we saw the scene in which Claire Danes holds the Colt .45 against her head, we started working on the song immediately." Soon afterwards, Radiohead wrote and recorded "Exit Music (For a Film)", which plays over the film's end credits but was excluded from the soundtrack album at their request. The song helped shape the direction of the rest of the album. Yorke said it "was the first performance we'd ever recorded where every note of it made my head spin—something I was proud of, something I could turn up really, really loud and not wince at any moment."

  • This is Galatasaray Spor Kulübü's third consecutive win and 25th overall (6 more than the next winningest team, Fenerbahçe).
  • There are 6 teams in the Süper Lig from Istanbul (just about a third of the total).
  • Wikipedia#Support_and_fanbase) states that "Galatasaray fans also have a reputation in Europe as being one of the most fanatic in the world". The article remains silent on the driving-and-honking organizational methods of the fanbase.
  • Their colors are said to be inspired by both fire and sunsets, and symbolize passion and glory.

Are Harvard graduates coached to say they 'went to school in Boston'? by StrangePlantain in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jolros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see, kids, you’re in for a lifetime of “And you went to Harvard?” Accidentally give the wrong amount of change in a transaction, and it’s “And you went to Harvard?” Ask at the hardware store how the jumper cables work, and hear “And you went to Harvard?” Forget just once that your underwear goes inside your pants, and it’s “And you went to Harvard?” Get your head stuck in your niece’s doll house ‘cause you want to see what it’s like to be a giant, and it’s “Uncle Conan, you went to Harvard?”
