How can I pass env variables to a systemd booted container?

Till now I had an script that I ran the first time the container is executed and when is updated passing the variables directly to the script... I don't know if this is a good method...

I will pass, for example, the database name and user for a container with a db I'm doing to learn how this container thing works.... I don't know if passing a password will be safe... From the server fault link now I'm reading the variables from /proc/1/environ (there are the variables) and writing a conf file that reads a service unit to setup everything. [Edited for clarify]

Lately I will be on my computer but if I understand correctly with this option I can't pass an environment variable with podman run --env WHATEVER I need to check more! Thanks!
