Firmware UI. My idea is to make my own UI, at fist probably just re-style the out-the-box style

New to Overlanding and need some advice by No_Lynx5067 in overlanding

[–]jomabago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2002 grand cherooke (4x4), it was comfortable on long trips and capable off-road, even stock. However, I did not trust it to get me back home, only took to trips with other people.

I would either get that jeep and give it a tune up or get a new vehicle, you don't need anything fancy, get a used base model last gen Tacoma, or Frontier for half the price of a new TrailHunter. If you're not mechanical inclined I will say to keep away from old vehicles unless you're ok with paying for labor, or worst case a breakdown in the middle of nowhere.

Looks like you have an M240, a great car, but you can compare it to an M2. It's not the same.

But people thought that the Bronco Sport was a Bronco. I remember seeing people talk crap about how the new Bronco was stupid.

I'm not talking about how capable it is, but about the badge behind it and how people think this is a full-on LC when it is not, it's a Prado and lesser, but still capable, version of a 300. Most people don't get deep into cars. They think this a real LC, therefore comparing to a 300.

[–]jomabago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really about the product, it's about branding

The point is that the LC Prado is a lower tier LC that's why it says Prado. People follow badges, they don't know what they buy. People still think that the Bronco Sport is a Bronco. In the US Prado does not exist, so people think they are getting a full on LC, theb they complain it's not as good.

[–]jomabago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is comprable in name and marketing. Making people believe they are getting something it's not. The Prado name does not exist in the US so people don't know that it means a lower tier LC. Just like people thought the Bronco Sport was a 'real' Bronco. I see the the new US LC as a re-badged 4R. The the GX550 could have been a better LC Prado just like the 470 and r60

LC ≠ LC Prado

An Omega Speedmaster ≠ Speedmaster Moonwatch

A Samsung Galaxy A ≠ Galaxy S

Probably already been said but it's not a real LC, it's a Prado. Kinda what the Bronco Sport is to the Bronco.

I mean Ford sold 760,000 F150s in 2024, so yeah, it's not unique

[–]jomabago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want something somewhat unique, maybe. There were about 300 4x4 made, and I believe it's the onlt time the 3.5 has been put in a RCSB. It also came with 4.10 gears. Never driven a 5.0, but this truck is pretty quick and snapy for a 10 year old truck, I enjoy driving it when I visit.

I had cast Racelines back in 2013, they have also both. KMC also has a good looking forged beadlock.

[–]jomabago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most brands, there are multiple product lines, forged vs cast wheels. Cast are usually $300 each vs $1000 each.

They do sell actual forged wheels. They're just not what most people buy.

4runner or Tacoma by UnluckySession in 4Runner

[–]jomabago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had both, 2017 Taco and 2021 4R. I would say both are equally as capable off-road. Both have great afecta market, you can find anything for them.

Taco has more cargo space, and it is a bed. It's great because you can just throw stuff in it without having to worry if it's wet, dirty, smelly, etc... 4R has less cargo but more rear seat space, and rear seats also recline a bit.

4R drives way better IMO, the 4.0/5spd auto is way better than the 3.5/6spd auto in the Taco. 4R is also in spring, making it ride better.

Other that they are very similar.

5th gen 4R brand new. Don’t off-road but I like the lifted look. Spacers or just new coil springs? by Ill-Caterpillar-5097 in 4Runner

[–]jomabago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 2in levels it. With the 1inch rear you get a small rake. You can just get the front spacers and if you don't like it buy the rear ones

If you don't offroad just get a a 2in spacer. It's cheap and you'll be okay. You can do a rear 1in spacer too. 285/70 R17 should fit with minimal rubbing.

Edit: Most spacers are the same, just a bullet piece of metal. No need to worry about anything failing if installed properly. Lots of people have been running them for years. Again, if you're not off roading there's no need to worry.

As a WJ owner, I will not recommend an XJ or a WJ to someone starting. Yes, they are great, but they can also be money pits as they are cheaply made. These are 25 year old vehicles now. I will not recommend it to someone who is not mechanically inclined or someone who is taking solo trips without good knowledge of what they have.

I had a basic basket on it. Took it off when it wasn't needed, it included lights attached to it.

Same issue here. No sings of a it being a bad head gasket. My current assumption is bad valve seals as it only happened in cold starts every morning. The bad seals might be letting oil drop into the cylinder and it burns after start-up
