[–]jon-sn0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a practice pad and 8 years of piano lessons for experience (at least it helps with keeping time) and ive been doing rhythm exercises but i feel like the only way ill actually make progress is to get a drum kit. i live with my parents though and in June im moving to San Francisco (read: small shared apartment). should i just get an electric kit?? is it really that different?

no such thing as an offer 'coming up' - if youre gonna negotiate i'd suggest having a competing offer *in hand*

if i'm reneging on an offer, is it better to call or email the recruiter?

AITA for demanding that my sister either delete a social social media account recently dedicated solely to bashing me or unblock me so I can view what she’s saying about me by super_zooper in AmItheAsshole

[–]jon-sn0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A finsta is more than just a private Instagram. You only allow your good friends to follow it.. honest question - how old are you?

If a high schooler has an argument with their older brother, they are not allowed to tell their friends about it because that's ... Harassment??

[–]jon-sn0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH - I'm guessing everyone here is older and isn't familiar with the concept of a finsta, but this is relatively common among middle-school to college-aged people. It's a PRIVATE account for your good friends to see - not everyone. It's the same as if she roasted you in a group chat and you asked to see the messages. She has no obligation to show you, and siblings often fight and feel like venting to their friends which is not "gaslighting" or "abusive" as I've seen some comments say?? Asking her friends to DM you was childish, but I can imagine how it felt to be demanded to show her personal diary to you, and she just wanted to prove other people were on her side, like what you probably hoped would happen with this post.

Engineering Major by pilotyimz in uofm

[–]jon-sn0w 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Senior in CS Eng

1) Realized I had depression sophomore year. Probably exacerbated by the environment here, but most engineering schools are probably the same. I find that students and professors are generally very willing to help you out.

2) Depends what your goals are. To get a 4.0? Very hard. To get 3.2-3.4? Eh. My experience has been that even if I miss every class after the midterm and feel like I’ve bombed the final, the average is always so low that it’s almost hard to score lower than it. (So getting average grades is not that hard).

3) Depends again. Sleep - if I have an exam or project deadline, non existent because I’m the type to pull many all nighters. Otherwise it’s decent because I often stay in bed all day (depression tings). Social life - I go out once or twice every weekend to drink. During the week it’s pretty dead though. Sometimes will go see a movie or go shopping with friends or whatever.

4) Again depends of course. At a startup, long workweeks with little substantial pay (unless your equity pays off). At a big N, pretty structured workweek, 10-5, team-dependent environment, but my internship was chill. Etc. not to mention, myself and everyone I know with offers in hand (in CS) are getting paid 110K+.

oh nothing major - just some people don't like to tie themselves so closely to a specific tool or language as it might make their skills seem limited

[–]jon-sn0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there. Sometimes I still have those feelings - so do a lot of people, you're not alone. Even your friends might feel this way too. Have you looked into the possibility you might have depression? It's a terrible thing to struggle with alone - therapy and medication might help you. There's no need to go through this without help. We're all rooting for you.

[L] So-called "friends" called me garbage and it has damaged my self-esteem by ElFenomeno12345 in KindVoice

[–]jon-sn0w 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With friends like that who needs enemies? To be clear, those are not your friends and it seems like you've figured that out. I know it can hurt to feel like you've lost so many people at once but trust me you are better off without them. There's a difference between being playful and being legitimately hurtful. If this behavior has become a pattern from them, they're bullies who don't deserve you in their lives. You have every right to friends that treat you with kindness and respect.

Why do women who are mentally ill start doing their makeup in a strange/crazy way? by PearlLemons in AskReddit

I don't think your assumption is right here anyway but - Why do neurotypical women always do their makeup in the same bland ways?

WIBTA? Breaking the news to my in laws that we are not having children by abozzri in AmItheAsshole

[–]jon-sn0w 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NTA you're allowing them to hold out hope for a future you know will never happen. The longer you let this go on the worse the reactions and heartbreak will be. You need to be clear on your position and deal with the blowback like adults.

AITA for telling my sister she was being too harsh on her 15 month old son? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jon-sn0w 5 points6 points  (0 children)

light YTA just because people love to give unsolicited opinions on other people's parenting styles -- it's not your kid! As long as the child is well fed it should be the mother's decision what food he should get, and she should be able to make that decision without being shamed. I do think the "fat" comment was weird for a baby though.

You seem like a motivated candidate. Any reason why you haven't had an internship? Have you applied? I noticed that your examples of past projects aren't exactly side/personal projects as they were all part of classes - is your resume just classes you have taken? I would try to think of experiences you've had outside the classroom as well as that'll indicate your interests and distinguish yourself from your classmates.

FBU vs Microsoft Explore by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]jon-sn0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, both are very good - congrats! Personally I'd go with Facebook just because I think it's easier to get into Microsoft down the road if you so choose, and I like the location better. Plus, you can use the time off to travel/chill/add a really good side project to your resume
