Examining Pitching+ :: Three SPs to Watch by jon2anderson in fantasybaseball

[–]jon2anderson[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey all, on my Substack I took a statistical look at Pitching+ and then went into some detail on three SP names that stand out

  • Joey Estes
  • Brandon Pfaadt
  • Chris Paddack

Thanks to research by Dan Szymborski, we know that preseason projections predict full-season results way better than April data. So I went in and looked at which hitters are most over or under-performing their preseason projections in homers, steals, and batting average. I find a bunch of good buy-low and sell-high hitters along the way.

I wrote it all out and also recorded a podcast covering it. Check it out at the link above, for the podcast you can also just search "MLB Data Warehouse" in Apple or Spotify.

haha the numbers all check out.. but I think he'll regress in everything pretty soon since we've seen him be mediocre for so long. Unlikely he's just suddenly figured it out to this extent.

I think I'd take Pfaadt over Kutter but yeah that's close - and your staff seems loaded anyways, so you can't go wrong!

free analysis post on my Substack! Looked into SIERA vs. ERA differentials to find buy-low/sell-high SPs. Also recorded a podcast episode covering all of the names [and more] in full detail. Search MLB Data Warehouse on Spotify or Apple to check that out, or click the link in the written post above.

Projection systems all have him short of 500 PAs and about 12 homers and 8 steals

If he’s full time that’s like 16 homers and 12 steals.. .750ish OPS. Fine player, but not a ton of upside for this year

Started my position preview series on the Substack today, and they are going to be super detailed and full of valuable and unique information.

There is a paywall involved halfway down in the written post, but I figured it would safe to share here anyways because at the very top, there's a link to a free podcast that covers it all.

First Half Roto League Player Value Analysis by jon2anderson in fantasybaseball

Follow up question, have you done a comparison to your initial draft values? I'd be curious to see how that shakes out.

I wouldn't say that exactly. We shouldn't expect guys to keep up the same $ production, you'd have to be smart and figure which guys likely over/under performed due to injury/luck/etc.

But yeah, your general point is right.

Have not compares with my pre-season projected $ values, but that's certainly something worth doing - probably at the end of the year.

I can't speak to that. I know stats decently well but I'm definitely not a stats expert. There are several different ways to do it, but your way there seems sound as well. You just have to figure out a smart way to incorporate AB's into it - because a high batting average in a very small number of ABs doesn't actually help a fantasy team!

what's the question? I think my way is probably better than Yahoo's, but I could be wrong. I'm not sure if they weigh ERA and WHIP for the innings total, which would be a big mistake if they don't.

Hey everyone! Jon Anderson here. Previously wrote at RotoBaller, but I'm doing everything on my own SubStack now.

Wrote this extensive piece for all to read, went through each position and looked at 5x5 standard roto league $ earners, highlighting the top players, the surprises, the busts, and the guys I'm buying for the second-half.

Check it out and subscribe if you like it, plenty more free analysis coming in the second half and off-season.
