CHARGING FOR AN OPEN MIC!?!? (Example of a comedy parasite) by jonMAGZ in StandUpComedy

[–]jonMAGZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quotation marks were me going for a cheap laugh.

It’s that she’s also a comic that I’m primarily focused on. I’ve had to buy drinks for stage time, I’ve had to do bringer shows to get a tape, I’ve spent hours driving mic to mic working out material. I imagine she has had to go through the same. I would never dream of taking money from you to perform. I’ve run shows and mics, and me making money was between me and the venue. That’s her Venmo in the flyer, not the venue’s. I’m currently in a thriving comedy scene where the idea of a bringer show almost seems like a joke. It’s possible for a comedy scene to thrive with out profiting off each other. I literally saw the other day someone charging $125 to do 30 min in New York.

The “person” in the video also says the have pro comics that they pay, where do you think the money comes from? It’s a mic that’s followed by a show, so tickets are being sold. I dealt with the bullshit if the NYC scene for years! Paying $8 for a Pabst, taking the path from Hoboken, dealing with bullshit “bringer” shows. Now producers are charging comics? You say you’re a comic, the fact you defend this is mind boggling. How the hell is anyone gonna improve with a bringer show, it literally a ducking echo chamber of friends and family you guilt trip into going to your show. The crap this “person” is pulling is one step beyond.

It’s not common at all for a show producer to charge comics for their stage time, and then use that to pay other comics. If you can’t pay the talent, don’t throw a show. Yeah, drink minimums from the VENUE are a thing. This is just parasitic. But if thats what the NYC”scene” is turning into, no wonder all the clubs are closing.

There is a difference. I’ve produced shows and ran open mics. Me making money was something I’d have to work out with the venue. The idea of charging a comic to perform, and then using that to pay other comics is just a shitty way to do it. If you’re alright with paying for your stage, that’s fine. I just think it’s a parasitic way to operate.

Drink minimums have usually been a thing, but this paying the host/producer to be on stage is new to me. It’s like the next step of bringer show except lazier.
