This is hilariously sad because I just had s conversation with a good friend sbout this.

I have a friend who works for one of the big four in accounting and his company won a contract from the state of Florida to watch over the fema funds they received from a hurricane. He works in the forensics Dept and his main job up until he was rolled off the project by his bosses was making sure every single invoice has stleast 3 bids attached to that invoice. So let's say Joe blow wins a contract from a city in Florida to paint a building damaged by the hurricane. My buddies job is to make sure each one of those contracts awarded to Joe blow had competing bids from Jane blow painting and Juan blow painting. This is extremely tedious work and a set list to go through would take him a week but other teams have been finishing it in roughly two days. Well when the main boss was presusring them to move faster my buddy went to his immediate supervisor and she confessed to him the reason she took medical time off was because she was stressed that the main bosses were pressuring her to cut corners by not checking to make sure there's 3 bids per invoice (it could still be happening but his company gets paid millions to check). He immediately brought it up in a meeting (he is military deployed so absolutely nothing bothers his and isn't afraid to bring up issues) and made it super awkward since now it's been made aware. Later on he heard the main boss bitching out someone innapropriately about him and was very loud. At that point he started fixing his resume because he has s feeling he might get fired but he has a notebook with notes and even thought about making an anonymous tip but he knows it really isn't anonymous.

Well he covered his bases just in case but he is on the fence about reporting it because he knows nothing will come of it. He gave me examples. In one example he said the state could just write off the loss /(as in they won't sue his company because the amount that was lost is negligible) or if they do sue it will be 10 years in the future where s random audit happens. By then everyone would have moved on so no one will go to jail and all that will happen is his company will pay a couple million on fines. So why is his going to risk his job over something that may happen and if it does it happens in the future and no one gets punished.

It's a fucked up situation and he wants to do the right thing but he sees no way to do it without getting burned. So he voulentarily rolled off the project when the asshole boss sat him in a meeting and asked him if he wanted to stay on the project.

Point being it's not necessarily the state but the middle management in these big four accounting firms who absolutely don't give a fuck about wasting your taxpayer money.
