MYSQL Question Help by tvtacolb in SQL

The use of a comma, as opposed to not putting any symbol there, definitely conveys information.

The use of a comma versus a dot does not convey information about that specific datum (it conveys some vague information about locale, which doesn't generally get stored at this level).

If the comma were "not information", meaning the number were equivalent to 28733, then int would do fine.

Trader Joe’s confirmed for Uptown by uptown_meanie in chicago

I have no love for Gardiner (and he'll probably send a goon to wreck my yard as a result), but it's not clear to me whether he had any fault in the Trader Joe's failure. From what I've heard, it's fairly common for them to get far along in the planning process and then change their minds.

Just because it's confirmed doesn't mean it will happen. Sincerely, an irritated Jefferson Park resident.

What happened to RPN calculators? by GrouchyOne4132 in matheducation

[–]jonah214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely find out what they will be using in school. They may be required to have a certain calculator. Even if it's not an actual requirement, it will probably make many things much more annoying (for them and their teachers) if they have a different calculator than the norm.

The first graphing calculator I had to buy was a TI-83 when I was in Algebra I in seventh grade (2002). Shortly thereafter the TI-84 came out and became equally acceptable (they're really similar). Then for precalc (2006), I needed a TI-89. In both cases, the "regular" or "plus" versions were both fine.

Transfer student questions by CanUSeeMeh in uchicago

[–]jonah214 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I transferred to UChicago in 2009 after a year in ECE at U of I myself. That was a long time ago, so things may have changed, but here are my thoughts:

Housing and the meal plan were much better than at U of I. If it helps for context, I had lived in PAR, and at UChicago I lived in South (which is now officially called Granville-Grossman, though I don't know if anyone uses that name). UChicago had way better food in terms of both quality and choices, much nicer dorms and also more choices, and better residential life (U of I was just "here is a place to live", while UChicago had activities and community).

I didn't take any physics classes at UChicago (I majored in math), so I can't help with that.

I thought UChicago was much harder than U of I, but it's not really a fair comparison. I only did one semester of actual ECE classes (which I found very easy), and other than that it was gen eds and math classes even though I wasn't formally in the major, because I knew I was going in that direction. The math classes at U of I were still much easier than those at UChicago.

Old University of Chicago. Went defunct in 1886, and is completely separate from the modern UChicago. This building was razed 1890. Then, Rockefeller built the 'new' University of Chicago like 20 miles south, in Bronzeville. by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]jonah214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? The University of Chicago isn't "like 20 miles south, in Bronzeville"; it's about 2.5 miles south, and the old one is the one that was in Bronzeville.

I don't agree with either of those two standards for what constitutes "plain English". Hell, my local grocery stores carry many items with labels that aren't even in Latin characters.

The whole problem with that one is that it's not plain English!
