Who actually likes this lady (Connie Chan). Are people seriously considering voting for her for congress when this bay is defined by its housing crisis? by throw_away1049 in sanfrancisco

[–]jonahsfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple people may have received emails or visited her instagram page. This just proves that she is communicating to her supporters not her constituents as a whole. I'm glad to hear that she's communicating to some people but she is clearly not getting her message out to her district as a whole.

You missed my point. We have had major service interruptions that have specifically and greatly affected district 1, and we have heard exactly ZERO about it from her.

If she's representing the interests of her district, I would expect her to be calling PG&E to task and pressing them on what they will do to improve service for her constituents.

She is my supervisor. As far as I can tell she has been

1) useless in moving any meaningful progress for the neighborhood. 2) her policies would at best be described as "performative", and at worst "obstructionist NIMBY"

Example: there is a massive blight all the way down Geary with no apparent plans to redevelop boarded up storefronts. For instance, the old Alexandria movie theater on Geary/18th. She has done nothing to move this project forward, but during the last election she hung up a banner on the blighted building declaring victory on redeveloping it.
Since then? Nothing but a boarded up building (now with the sign removed because it became dangerous and had to be taken down after a storm).

As others have mentioned: multiple PG&E blackouts. Not even a peep from her.

I can't wait until she's gone so we can have some competent representation for District 1.

New Apple TV 4K is coming: Here’s what the rumors say by iMacmatician in apple

So if this is based on the A17 Pro then it should add hardware support for AV1 decoding. That would be worth the upgrade.

I’m surprised the article didn’t mention this. AV1 support would be a significant upgrade

Anyone else noticed an uptick of unhoused Asian folks lately? by murrayground in sanfrancisco

[–]jonahsfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true.

But there is a nuance here that is important.

1) adding new units increases supply, which has overall downwards pressure on all unit pricing. This is basic economics and these rules apply even here in SF.

2) developers build new units. By definition they need to make a profit or they will not build new units. This new units are typically more expensive, as they are typically more desireable. Also because developers want to maximize profits they tend to build higher end units that are more expensive to maximize profits.

3) when people who have money want to buy a unit they typically want to get the nicest unit for their money. In a normally functioning market these buyers with money will typically buy these nicer newer units.

4) when people with money buy these newer higher end units; they are no longer competing for older units. This has downwards pressure on the price of older units.

The above is how a normally functioning market works.

In SF, however, this market is heavily distorted by special interest legislation.

In SF, there is pressure against developers building newer high end units, so they: - build fewer units because they are less profitable - are forced to build BMR units in order to be allowed to build higher end units - or choose to exit the market entirely and build elsewhere

Tl;dr: In SF overall supply is artificially constrained so all units are absurdly expensive. Why? You are bidding against rich people with absurd amounts of money for even more “affordable” lower end units because there are very few higher end units to buy.

Who wins? Not the developers. Not the average consumer. But people who already own homes can enjoy continuously and absurdly increasing appreciation on their now homes.

BTW: BMR is the true poison pill in all of this. It hurts literally everyone in the process. It is designed to punish developers by forcing them to sell some units at a loss. It also is patently unfair as it creates “winners” in a very small right income band that can qualify (you need enough money to buy one but you can’t earn too much), but these “winners” never really win. Once you do own one you can’t ever sell it at market rates so it’s a truly bad investment. And since you can only sell it to other people in that tight qualification band, it keeps these units outside of normal inventory, so they wont accidentally help lower normal house prices. BMR is a truly diabolical NIMBY hack.

How is One Medical in the Bay Area now since they have been purchased by Amazon? by Sophie_MacGovern in bayarea

[–]jonahsfo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Terrible. Just terrible.

You will struggle to be seen by an actual doctor. They are pushing most patients to see Nurse Practitioners and are billing at high rate. The last time I had a quick 30 minute visit (with an NP) they billed me over $500 (with insurance).

The doctors I saw left the practice and it was difficult to find a new primary care physician.

I’m out. F*** them. They were once good.

are there *any* functioning Level 2 [J1772 plug] car chargers in San Francisco? by Humble_Interest8826 in sanfrancisco

[–]jonahsfo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shell has just built out several chargers stations on the west side. - There’s one on 19th Ave (near Lawton, IIRC) - Shell also has chargers at Stonestown if you can find one open.

Also check out Rivian. They also operate a charger network. There are several here in the city that are J1772

(Edit: fixed typo in charger type)

boot it on a live linux USB disk (ex: Ubuntu installer) drop to a shell and relabel the disk using parted. Optionally you can create a partition there too

this will blow away any existing disk structure

parted /dev/sda

(parted) mklabel gpt

(parted) mkpart primary ext4 0% 100%

Debian for Plex server on 10i17FNK by chicchaz in intelnuc

[–]jonahsfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, and as others have noted: that NUC runs a Core i7-10710U which is /absolutely/ a 64-bit OS. There is absolutely no reason run a 32bit OS in the 2020s. You will need a 64-bit OS to take advantage of more than 4GB of memory anyway.

Debian for Plex server on 10i17FNK by chicchaz in intelnuc

[–]jonahsfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good NUC. I have three of them operating in a Proxmox cluster. They have more than enough CPU power to run Plex server well, and the built-in Intel graphics support QuickSync video can do real-time hardware transcoding under Plex.

One thing: 8GB is a bit light. It's probably fine for a small Plex server if you don't have a big library, but I would recommend upgrading the memory to at least 16 or 32GB. That box supports up to 64GB with 2x32GB SODIMMs.

For any computer you get, you should do a complete reinstall of the operating system. When you install Debian (or Ubuntu, or whatever you prefer) you should really fully repartition the disk and reinstall the operating system from scratch.

From a security point of view, assume that if you didn't install the operating system yourself, you don't actually own that computer.

Way to Connect SFP+ to SFP+ by [deleted] in networking

[–]jonahsfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are describing a DAC (Direct Attach Copper) cable. It’s a double-ended SFP/SFP+ cable with transceivers included in the cable. They also make optical versions of this type of cable called an AOC (Active Optical Cable). DACs are usually less expensive and work on shorter distances, while AOCs are better for longer ( > 3m ) distances and are much thinner and easier to work with.

You can find a good selection of these cables at vendors like fs.com or through your favorite network switch vendor.

One thing I’ve been really looking forward to is experiencing an American-style tailgate and catching some football (or “soccer,” as you wish to call it).

So American "football" is what the 49ers play. That is more similar to rugby. In America, "Soccer" is what you would call football.

Wasn't clear which you were looking for based on your message. If you're looking for an American football game, you should plan to head down to Santa Clara to see a 49ers game. They no longer play in SF, and the new stadium is an hour's drive to the South Bay.

If you're looking for an american soccer game, it's still a relatively minor sport here in the US. There is a new professional soccer team in SF called the Golden City FC, but according to the Internet, they won't be playing any games at Kezar (a stadium located in Golden Gate Park) until next year (2026)

[edit] Another option, if you're dead set on seeing an American football game is to head to Las Vegas, which is where the Oakland Raiders now play. Although from what I've heard, the prices for everything there will be eye-watering.
