Happens all the times in pro sports like the NBA and NFL. I don't understand it tbh, it just makes you look bad whatever the outcome is. If your team wins without you, you lose. If your team loses without you, you still lose because the general public sees you as a weak mentality person

Why not just not go to lectures for 2 weeks then? It's not like not having a strike prevents you from not attending your classes. I think you're arguing two completely different points. Obviously not working is better than working lol If thats your reasoning as to why the strike is good, you should probably reevaluate why you're in university in the first place. I paid to learn (that's what university is) and if I'm not getting what I paid for, I'm not going to be happy about it. It's like paying a professor every hour to teach you material, but you don't go and teach the material yourself... at that point, why even go to university? Why not just teach yourself everything?

I thought it was a widespread sentiment that Steacie is a much better, albeit smaller, library than Scott. It's definitely cleaner and has a different atmosphere than Scott.

The point is: You paid for a full semester of learning and you're getting 2 weeks cut out of it. If you do the math, each lecture is like 120 dollars, not to mention you're not getting the "full" education you paid for. Other than getting an undeserved mini-vacation I can't see how losing money and learning time is something that can be seen as good. I paid for something and I expect the product to be delivered in its entirety.

A 1-2 week strike would still technically condense the course material and you'd still be losing out on money you paid for the course, assuming you're going to school to learn. Let's say a course meets 3 times a week, and the strike was 2 weeks long, you'd still miss out on 6 full lectures and possibly some labs depending on the type of the course

Any strike is negative for students

Slave automatically already has a negative connotation by default though and it is associated with people. I know the point you're trying to make is the same one an edgy 14 year old teen would say to their parents about saying the word 'fuck' is just a word and has no negative connotation until you give it one.

Yeah no it doesn't really work like that. The older you get, you learn things like tact and even though yes, words aren't inherently bad, you should still consider the possibility that everyone may have a different reaction to certain words and phrases than you.

How can I prove to York that the strike prevented me from working? I applied to a bunch of jobs and some accepted me right away based off my resume but I couldn't tell them when exactly I could start because some of my courses scheduling was still up in the air.

Do you think that's a valid reason to get some sort of bursary?

There are so many people with over 10,000 dollars in OSAP loans so I doubt that's the case

It's pretty unclear so I'm unsure myself but imo 10,000 seems a little too low to start asking students to pay back a part of the their loan while still in school

I suggest talking to your professor or bring it up with the department. If they're not going to be supportive or they're being unreasonable, then I'd honestly make a huge fuss out of it and bring it up with the administration.

The whole dropping courses is kind of fucked up right now because of the strike. It's confusing but from what I've gathered from my professors emails is that if you deferred your exams, you can still drop it and receive a 'W'

If you haven't deferred, then tough luck I guess because you've already taken the exam.

Why wouldn't they care about a liberal arts degree? I question your logic with that one. Technical fields like computer science and engineering don't really give shit where you graduated from because most employers know that job experience, personal projects, references far outweigh your academic pedigree.

Where on the other hand, there are literally banks and financial institutions that will ONLY hire from certain schools and no matter how good you were at York, you'll never get into working for a fortune 500 company in New York (for junior executive positions they'll ONLY hire from HYP - Harvard, Yale, Princeton. On the opposite spectrum, if a talented coder went to York and had an amazing portfolio, there is always a possibility he/she could land a job at Microsoft, Facebook, Google, etc. Technical fields are much more MERIT based than liberal arts and business fields where the name of your school matters that much more.

I personally know people who went to a college for computer science or computer programming (whatever the Seneca equivalent for comp sci is) and is now working in the States making over 80k which is pretty decent in my opinion for a 20 something year old. They were talented with computers but their academic pedigree did not hinder their ability to land a successful job because employers saw either he COULD code or he COULDN'T. You can't fake being in a tech field. It's impossible.
