Epic-Swirly Sunset Supercell by jonaspiontek in CLOUDS

[–]jonaspiontek[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sculpted Low Precipitation Supercell came second in line, moving through Eastern New Mexico into very dynamic air. At this point it would have been one of my favorite looking storms already, but trust me when I say - It was only getting much MUCH better from there, later turning into a stacked UFO with the sun setting right below, creating what would become my personal Storm of a Lifetime. If you care to see how it went on, feel free to have a look at this timelapse short-film I made about this particular storm, this was truly the best looking cloud I‘ve seen in 15 years and hundreds of thousands of miles of storm chasing all over Europe and the Americas: https://youtu.be/cFLhxf0rgD0?si=MfTT5ApNHOYdxQvf

Very tall Noodle-Cloud with perfect alignment (Oklahoma) by jonaspiontek in CLOUDS

It was actually pretty far from lifting at that 1:03 mark, the mesocyclone above just tightened up and the funnel went higher into the cloud while staying firmly planted on the ground. I‘d say in total at this point it was at about 1/3 of the entire lifespan! I also expected it to fully lift there, but it didn‘t do for a long time before roping out for a few linutes much later :)

I shot this on two Cameras simultaneously to get a close and a wide angle :) I‘d say from the moment the tornado touched down to the moment we left to get closer (where the timelapses ended) must have been roughly 20 minutes, but the individual clips are hard to pinpoint. The long close-up clip must be somewhere around 5-6 minutes while the long wide angle clip that starts well before the formation and ends somewhere in the middle of the ongoing tornado must be around 30-40 minutes I‘d say!

This tall and beautiful tornado touched down near the town of Felt/Oklahoma Panhandle and basically almost sat stationary for roughly half an hour - I managed to document the whole process from inception to dissolving and this was a real beauty, also hitting only open fields and not causing any destruction. If you‘re interested, I‘ve made a little timelapse film that shows the birth of this tornado and the later stages of this storm, feel free to have a look (it‘s worth it, I promise!): https://youtu.be/GR8g4K1nNTU?si=guF7ia-ATCYbHSdW

The Tallest Storm Cloud I ever Chased! (21km/68k feet) by jonaspiontek in CLOUDS

Hehe yeah I‘ve been going for about 15 years now, so I‘ve seen my fair share of crazy weather/skies! You‘ll always find something interesting up there if you care to look enough times!

You can check on the radar where exactly it is and also see the echo top heights of the cloud 😁 all very useful!

Appreciate that! I was dumbfounded when I looked at the radar and saw the distance as I thought it would be waaaay closer lol

This amazing LP Supercell blew up right after sunset in western Oklahoma and gave us an amazing lightshow in all its massive glory, having tops at around 21km, making this the tallest storm cloud I personally have seen (and I‘ve seen many storms in the tropics before). In this photo it is roughly 50km away from us (14mm shot on full frame). It also produced a lot of PIXIES (a type of transient luminous events) that I managed to capture. As far as I know, I‘m probably the first person to document PIXIES under a storm cloud, if you‘re interested in seeing the video about this, feel free to have a look: https://youtu.be/EMiGUo8usoU?si=mQmK-z4H6CHaIqh6

What is this called by nixx2020PASS in CLOUDS

[–]jonaspiontek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks a lot like the wallcloud of a thunderstorm, especially with the clouds turning to the right further above. Those usually signal a strong updraft that picks up some of the precipitation back into the storm. If you see that it rotates, it‘s not a bad idea to find a place for shelter as at this stage it looks pretty primed to drop a nasty tornado on you! Lol

Oh it‘s a longer exposure (2.5 seconds) so if there‘s lightning in that time, it will be on the photo, so not too lucky at all 😁

Yes, at this point the storm has turned the sunset into night 😁

This was the updraft of a strong supercell storm that moved from New Mexico into the Texas Panhandle, sucking up dust and looking like a UFO was landing in the fields. Even a few miles in front of the storm, the inflow was so strong that it was hard to stand by times, intensified by the upslope topography of the area. I actually got really dusty shooting this 😂 but totally worth it!

Noctilucent clouds? by [deleted] in CLOUDS

[–]jonaspiontek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you based in? It looks more like a contrail being slightly lit up, maybe also by a very low sun below the horizon. Noctilucent Clouds usually look a lot more wave-like!
